  • Here's a link to purchase your own Digital Vernier gauge from Amazon for £6.99 so you can check your alloy wheels too:

** Let us know the thickness of your spokes in the comments below **
15mm seems to be the original thickness (of the thinnest part of the spoke).
9.58mm is the lowest we've seen so far.
    WHAT THICKNESS IS YOURS?

I've had a set of analogue callipers for years but as i get older i'm struggling to read them without fumbling around for reading glasses so a few weeks ago i bought the exact digital ones you have linked. I wasn't expecting much for £7 but to my surprise they are very good. I've even compared measurements with the analogue ones and can confirm they are very accurate.

Thanks for the info. We agree - the analogues have been great for years but digital ones are so cost effective and accurate now that it's hard to ignore them.

6:00- the rest of the long spokes still are joined/ haven't formed a hole yet. Looks like a very uneven cut, pretty poor! Love the videos as always

You're right - poor job indeed if they couldn't get it equal even on a lathe! 🙈

Agree - the person 'cutting' the wheels should have known better. We think there should also be a generally agreed 'safe limit' to avoid cracking or worse a crash happening.

@@RedishMotorsportbmw Totally. Taking away more than 1mm should not be an option. on these big contemporary rims/wheels (e.g. 18, 19, 20 inch) this is huge mass.

More than likely, a dodgy (run of the mill) dealer selling on an E46 M3 with "freshly diamond cut wheels". Arthur Daily lives on.

Had some white worm starting to creep around the BMW emblem on my 403m wheels, I visited my local wheel refurb place and asked how much material they would take off (wheels where immaculate other than slight corrosion) they said 2mm!! Safe to say I never went back.

  • @RK-ed1em
    @RK-ed1em Před 4 lety +1

Wow, never seen a set of these style 67s corroded that bad, then diamond cut to that extent. The factory finish on these is extremely durable and they are forged wheels, too! I guess that northern weather takes its toll on car parts. Curb rash and rock chips expose the metal underneath and it goes from there.

Really surprised us to see how much has been 'cut' and then the visual difference is shocking.

In Germany if you do something like this to your wheel it automatically loses the govt. approval for road use. Not allowed to galvanic coat them gold either.

@@ben110286 So, mine (e92) are all 12.5 apart from Front Left, which is 10.5. Coincidentally or not this corner was a little off on the wheel alignment initial measurements. Pot hole maybe?! Either way, this "refurbishment" can be dangerous and scary.

I think it's a crack in the clear coat (not sure why it's a dark line though). It's possible a crack - but I think it's more a paint defect. Good spot on the M badges!

Apparently 15.0mm at their thinnest point on the spoke. It's not an official figure, but we're seeing 'cut' wheels at around 13.5mm and assume people are taking approx 1.0mm off?
The main reasoning for 15.0mm is that one viewer posted a comment on our Facebook video saying his 'polished' (factory) original wheels measured at 15.0mm.

Over one third missing. The engineering numbers for alloys may err well on the safe side but to reduce the material to that degree is madness. I'd have to assume multiple cuts and the last by someone inexperienced! Anyone competent would know the limit for safe removal.
