    This video was an absolutely remarkable deconstruction of an absolutely remarkable song. You did the greatest album of the decade justice with a touching, thoughtful reflection. Supremely well done, I appreciated this.

    I am so satisfied to see Fourth of July getting the recognition it deserves. A very underrated song

    I think the line "my little Versailles" could also be a reference to Versailles agreement not the palace itself because she had to leave and it was for the best as in the lyrics

    I've never replied to a video before, but this video essay of yours is forcing me to. Or rather, the three essays I've just watched: this beautiful one, the fantastic one about 'How to Disappear Completely' and the brilliant one about 'F# A# ∞'. Thank you so much for the work you put into each of them. I already know I will come back to all three from time to time. Of course, it helps that I absolutely love the music in them.
    And that leads me to a request. I don't know if you do those, but here goes nothing. I think it would be amazing to listen to you breaking down 'Hospice' by The Antlers. Another piece of music that always hits me hard. Very hard.
    Well, regardless of if you'll ever make a video essay about that album, please keep doing what you're doing. I love it. And I'm so happy to read that many others love what you do, too.
    Thank you.

    Radiohead and Sufjan might be my two favorite musicians/musical groups. Please keep the analysis videos coming!

    Uuuuuuh this made me cry! I knew Carrie & Lowell was written for her death but I had no clue about the backstory or the structure of Fourth of July. Great video for a great song.

    Fourth of July is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. To hear it’s story makes it ever more haunting.
    I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the song ‘I Get Overwhelmed’ by Dark Rooms.

    What a beautiful and insightful exploration of this musician! To me, music, like all forms of art, is communication. What we choose to share is up to the artist.

    Thanks a lot! This was moving (and tear-jerking) indeed. For me personally Johann Johannsson is the epitome of turning grief and sadness into beautiful, melancholic and mesmerizing music. (Even if it turned out a too heavy burden for him.) Can you make a video about him (and any of the songs on Orhee)? I dare you.

    Wonderful analysis. It sure is a masterpiece album, and this song is integral. I'd love to know what you think of Mount Eerie's "A Crow Looked At Me" album. Astonishingly raw portrayal of grief. Portrayal isn't even the right word. It's just there, immediate and unadorned.

    • @TalkingWithTom
      @TalkingWithTom  Před 3 lety +2

      thank you so much!! i really appreciate your words. a crow looked at me, in a sentence, is the best album i never want to hear again. it's absolutely unrelenting in its misery, to the point where i can hardly listen to any of the songs, let alone the whole album.
      the difference between it and, say an album like hospice by the antlers is that there's no real catharsis at the end so it just hurts from start to finish. that, for all the incredible lyricism and raw grief, makes it really hard to listen to more than once.

    • @ollieoleary
      @ollieoleary Před 3 lety +1

      @@TalkingWithTom I totally understand Tom. It's devastating to listen to, but I have managed to savour it repeatedly myself. The fact that the songs were clearly written so soon after she died, and there's no real use of metaphor to relay what happened and how he felt, just makes it so shockingly honest. Glad I found your channel tonight, great work. Best wishes.
