Some of my FONDEST memories of being a kid in the 90's, was playing this game. I'll never forget the very first time I was introduced to Dark Forces. My neighbor got it for his birthday and called me over to check it out. We must have sat in his room on that computer taking turns for at least 2 or 3 days straight.
I can still remember his Dad walking in his room and asking us if we had slept the night before. And his surprised look when my friend told him we had stayed up for the past two nights playing on the computer. 🤣 Good times!
Sadly, my friend is no longer with us. Every time I see this game, I'm reminded of him and all the great times we had playing it together. 🥲
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane Jason. I needed a smile today. 🤜🤛
What happened to your friend?
@@VideInfraHe died. That's all we need to know.
Also, I had a friend like that as well. We went to see the Star Wars movies when they were re-released back in the 90's. We both were so excited to go see them. I remember after seeing one of them he asked me to drive him by his grandmothers house so he could get his copy of Rebel Assault for PC. He was in the Star Wars frame of mind that day. He too passed back in 2011, and he will forever be linked to my Star Wars memories.
Me and my friend did the same with this game and so many others. Unreal was one of the other ones we stayed up for nights playing and drinking Dr Pepper. Great times indeed. I’m sorry to hear about your friend. ❤️ 🕊️
Sorry this game looks terrible
Before Disney changed it to Cassian Andor and "Jyn Erso", it was Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors who were sent to get the Death Star plans.
Fun fact: In the Andor TV series (great show btw), Cassian Andor carries the Bryar pistol used by Kyle Katarn in this 1995 game.
it's not actually the same model of Bryar pistol. it's morseo based on the Battlefront 2015 take on the Bryar model, which in turn was inspired by that game. it also added a rotating cylinder for reloads in Andor
Rogue One was still a good story.
I had no problems with Jyn Erso she had legit a true struggling background story.
Before Dark Forces, it was covered in the Star Wars radio play. So it's not the first time it's been retconned. There's also that PSP game where Kyle Katarn employs a Twi'lek agent and her droid to steal the plans as well.
@@boblowes Star Wars Lethal Alliance. Yeah she was cute
Jyn Erso - Jan Ors omg how did it take this long for me to see this 😮
A Dark Forces 2 - Jedi Knight remaster would be AMAZING!
Def coming !
If this does well I think Jedi Knight is pretty much a given...
Yeah I bought this remaster right away- mostly because I wanted to play it, but also to vote with my wallet that we want them to continue with Jedi Knight.
@@Fastwinstondoom The first one. Without the dinosaur.
Oh yeah! I miss some good 'ol Canyon Oasis death match!
Those 90s Star Wars game covers are work of art. It really did a fantastic job in sucking you into the galaxy
Still waiting for a Rogue Squadron trilogy remaster...
I think Aspyr is more likely to handle that series. The question then would be if it’s a remaster like they did with Tomb Raider 1-3, or an upressed port like they did with Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy. I’d like Rogue Squadron to get the Tomb Raider treatment, but honestly I’m someone who wouldn’t complain too much about just simply getting a collection that simply just ups the resolution to 1080 and higher. Also if Rogue Squadron gets a modern collection release, I’d love to also have Battle for Naboo included. That game was the only dedicated Prequel game Factor 5 made and it slightly bums me they never fully revisited that setting (closet we got to a revisit of the Prequels was when they did include a level in RS3 that saw Wedge land on Geonosis and pilot Obi Wans Jedi star fighter after dealing with some separatist droids that were still functioning).
Emperor Palpatine will return 3-4 more times before that happens.
“Somehow, he’s back”
@@majorgear1021 I'd call that a new hope then as the last bonus mission from the first game is taken straight from the "Dark Empire" comic in which Palpatine made a return as a clone. We're covered on that end... And since we're still getting a fair amount of old games making a comeback in remaster form, I'd say its a safe bet overall. I just won't put money in Vegas on it, but I may on the pre-order.
Shadow of the empire
Right. Hope they implement a checkpoint system instead of lives though.
Dusting off my SoundBlaster 16.
Definitely gonna go with the OPL-3 option once I start playing the remaster..
Yes, you could turn off the head-bob effect in the original version. You could also turn off the hud and holster your weapon. All of these functions were assigned to the F function keys on the keyboard (F1-F8) but it’s been so long I can’t recall which ones. Very innovative at the time. 👍
For the soundtrack, it seems like they went for a soundfont that emulates what a more high-end PC of the time would have used. The thing about a lot of the DOSbox releases of old games is that they often choose to emulate a more basic sound card that *most* players would have had in their PC at the time rather than the higher-end stuff that the more dedicated PC users of the day would have favored; this leaves players of today to find and implement external soundcard emulation manually if they want that experience, which can be tricky to pull off.
Yes, when I played with the Force Engine, it also had that option with multiple high-end sound cards of the era. You can also download soundfonts and have the Force Engine use those instead of the built-in ones. MIDI was quite a wild west.
Though the SC55/88 was the Gold Standard, I was quite partial to the Yamaha MU80. Does anyone know where to download an MU80 soundfont ? You can replace the sound font in the files of the remaster but it obviously won’t fix the out of sync music. It seems a little too fast.
I have an SC-88 Pro hooked up to my Linux desktop where I was making slow progress through the original Dark Forces with the beautiful MIDI music from it. Now, I am wondering if the Remaster will sound as good.
@@slaapliedje the remaster is still good but the music can be a bit annoying but it’s not terrible. Hope they patch the music issue.
@iedjeIt'd be fantastic if they offered a MIDI Output option for the music so we can use our own gear or drivers if we have it. But that's not going to happen. The SC-55 soundfont they're using is pretty close, but not perfect (no soundfont can be). As for the OPL3 (FM synth) emulation, I can't tell so far if they've used different OPL instruments (they've done this before with ROTT LE) or if they're just using a different OPL emulation core.
Watching your channel is like getting into a really deep game where you have to constantly go on the wiki to find out how to unlock certain items or have the best builds, then go on youtube & find a bunch of videos of how people are playing it.
Basically what I'm saying is your channel has a really warm feel to it & it makes me have a deeper love & respect for video games & all the equipment that goes along with it
Achievement Unlocked. 😍
Official Star Wars is whatever Disney says it is. Authentic Star Wars is everything before the sale of Lucasfilm. You can't buy authenticity.
I love the pixel style of the OG Version more
Agreed. I think it looks a little strange with the high res work - like the world is a bit more lifeless?
Bizarre take. What would even be the point in leaving it blurry and blocky
@@Dappydoo cause retro style, you know, also known as boomer shooter ^^
You can change it in settings
Next version far better, so many upgrade over the original, HUGE W for this remaster.
I wish they added a mini map with a tracker on where to go next. I may prefer old games but modern fixes like that are a blessing with big maze like games with identical layouts.
Thanks so much for posting this! The sheer amount of nostalgia I'm getting flooded with while watching is bringing tears to my eyes. These old Star Wars games that ran in DOS were amazing. I remember my friends and I collecting all of them and absolutely loving the heck out of the Dark Forces series, especially Jedi Knight. We were so hungry for new lore that we would sit through the FMV scenes in both of the Rebel Assault games and we absolutely devoured the story in the Tie Fighter Collector's Edition Strategy Guide. I have a bunch of them now in my Steam collection and need to find time to both revisit them and pick up this new remaster.
I think the head-bobbing in the original game was called "Head Wave" and *could* be disabled -- at least, in the DOS version.
Yes. Key was F6 I believe.
Star Wars X-Wing is the reason I added a Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas to my computer. I'm glad they have that version, that's how I remember the music for Dark Forces! Just wish we got a discount for owning the original Steam version. At least there's a discount for owning Battlefront 1 and 2 classics when the SWBF collection comes out.
Thanks for mentioning SWBF collection, I hadn't heard of it.
I just noticed that there is a 10% discount for owning the original on Steam. I bought it!
Back then all audio was crab, midi sounds.......
compressed or Flac better ?????
I remember beating this game over a weekend on a PS1. Believe I was sick that week/end, and my Dad made the weekly journey to the local rental store for me. He rented this and a couple movies. I was hooked on this game. Happy to see this get a proper revisit.
That elevator puzzle stumped me. Genius puzzle design.
...for a game. If this were a real world scenario, the workers would be so confused and inefficient.
I would love for devs to start doing this with games like
Dino crisis 1 and 2
Re 1 and 2, code veronica
Parasite eve 1 and 2
Silent hill
They could make so much money and we would be so happy
Resident evil 1 & 2 have a makeover via the seameless HD project, and RE1 was also remastered
Read that Parasite Eve can't happy because it was based on something and they were not happy with the games...
@@damn5987 im talking about the original just like tomb raider 1 2 and 3
@@TheMcrico84 RE1 and RE2 (and RE3) in the seameless HD project are the original versions
Well, they did do RE2. Definitely want a Silent Hill remake. I played it a lot when it was new back in the day, but last time I tried it, it's very dated and looks bad, graphics-wise. Most retro games' dated graphics don't bother me, but that one does. I'd just love to see it in HD glory with what they can do with lighting and shadows now.
Probably my second favorite Star Wars game after TIE Fighter. Lucasarts was killing it in the 90's.
Agreed! Love me some Tie Fighter too!
Gotta be one of my favourite star wars games, 90s FPS were great
This was an instant purchase for me! Love old school FPS games
at $43 it was an instant no buy for me!
$43 is a lot of money to you lmao sad life you have. Maybe you just a cheap ass hat@@purefoldnz3070
i bought it in 1997, remastered ? It's still old...
Honestly... the Star Wars Universe after ROTJ and before TPM... was the absolute best. Will die on this hill all day 🤘🏻
Yes! Star Wars in the 90s got a special place in our hearts
I agree. There was something a bit more special about it back then, before all the Special Editions, prequels, Clone Wars cartoons, etc. It was just three classic movies and a few novels, comics, and games.
I'll die on that hill right there with you. It's never been the same since.
I played the original on PS1 to death, I remember that game so much!
mum gave it ?
why no PC ?
12:29 You're correct that Kyle Katarn is no longer a part of Disney's canon, however Cassian Andor is heavily inspired by Katarn as evidenced by the fact he has the same pistol in Andor that Katarn has in the games, albeit it does not look exactly the same obviously.
Muhahaha, Patme, Nathalie Portman dolls, she is not it ????
FCK THAT HARD !
the skating effect from games without headbob is what gets me.
Now we need Dark Forces 2 jedi knight + mysteries of the sith. that game has never been released on consoles and is absolutely incredible.
It is. And the most difficult of the 4 Dark Forces games.
Alllll I want is a Shadows of the Empire remaster that's a lot like this one.
Exactly, it's almost like that game is forgotten amongst developers....
A remaster would be great- ideally using the PC version, but add the option to use the N64 artwork cutscenes, which I thought were much better than the atrocious CG cutscenes in the PC version.
gotta love all the ADLIB/SOUNDBLASTERY goodness of the midi soundtracks from back then
General midi crab you need ?
why stick in the past, why you need that now ?
I didn't even know you could look up or down in this game. Goes to show you how many times I just jumped into a game without looking at the manual first
You don't really need to look up or down in the original as the auto-targeting is pretty forgiving...but yeah... it's there if you wanted it LOL
This is awesome! I really hope they do remasters for Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith.
Great to see Remaster version!
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight is one of my favourite games of all time 💜
Me too. In comparison the first Dark Forces isn't even worth mentioning. Jedi Knight is still one of the best FPS's of all times. The second one too.
Oh my goodness i forgot all about this game. Great review I'll have to check it out.
I remember being 8 and watching my dad play this and shadows of the empire on the windows 98, it was mindblowing to play something 3d at the time, I didnt play this much, but I played a lot of shadows of empire, had a blast, the water level creeped me out, specially the boss, good times
I had graphics culture shock when I went back to Shadows of the Empire for N64 recently. It is amazing how good it looked to me on release. I will definitely be picking up DF Remastered. Now all we need are remasters of X-Wing and TIE Fighter.
Yes, without a good CRT, the visuals and frame pacing will always be worse than you remember.
Honestly, _Shadows of the Empire_ had very monotone graphics even back then thanks to the N64 limitations which were carried over to the PC version (which by the way required a 3D accelerator card). The Hoth levels had only one texture!
Forgot to add to my CZcams video link. Tie Figther, XWA, and X-Wing have been worked on via fans for many many years. The Tie Fighter Total Conversion linked above has released and the Reimagined Campaign is getting close to completion.
Omg when I was tinkering with the original steam release I tried desperately to figure out how to run dark forces with roland sc55 audio on my modern pc. I had no luck. So glad they used that for this release.
Loved this game as a kid, I have the steam version but it just felt antiquated and frustrating to control when I went back to it a few years ago. This looks absolutely amazing and I cannot WAIT to play through a quality Nightdive take on this one.
Extremely well edited and nicely spoken review. Well done on this one
Much appreciated!
Good reviiew man, thhanks.
One of my favs back in the day. Dark Forces, Tie Fighter, & Rebel Assault 2 where my JAMS on my old Compaq! Take my money!
Oh man, I can barely think of a time when video game motion made me have a physical reaction but at 2:24 where the mouse look makes the skybox and geometry warp and move really gave me a nasty moment of motion sickness.
Wow! This looks great! Going to purchase now. Brings back soooo many memories DOS/Windows gaming in the 90s. Now I want a remaster of Carmageddon :D
For me legends is cannon. It's disney that isn't.
Completed original mac version a year ago on my iBook G3 500. Still plays very well!
I’ve recently replayed the original using the fan-made Force Engine replacement for some gameplay improvements, which btw has collab’ed w/NightDive & is going to support the Remaster’s assets, too! As for more of a remake: There was a DF mod for Jedi Academy well underway (07-08?), later cancelled, and the demo was/is pretty epic. Still on ModDB
@MetalJesusRocks
Thank you for reviewing this! A remake would be very cool!
The repeater was my most used weapon
One of my memories of the game was when you go to... not to spoil, but just a place that's a bit different than the usual bunkers, and I was excited for a moment to maybe see some glimpse of noncombatants or an illusion of a populated area but it was clear that wasn't going to happen, the engine would probably fall apart, and it wouldn't have served a shooter story too well, I guess. Now those things are within reach of developers, but then it felt like every choice must have been exacting, despite it being decades after people were squeezing bits into Atari carts.
A fond memory was how they used map geometry to create an illusion of different floors despite the Doom-style vertical limitations
This one sneaked up on me, would definitely like to have it.
I love the switch between original n remaster feature, so I can see what they have changed or improved anywhere in the game. Im using it a lot on the Tomb Raider remastered trilogy
11:47 never noticed the Phase 2's on standby back there.
Thanks for the review!
The remaster looks exactly how I remember it from the 90s :)
That's always the sign of a great remaster; to simply make the game look how you remember it looking, as opposed to how to it actually looked.
With CRT monitors back then it most likely did , and now we all can have this great quality .
I remember back in the day this game felt like you were running around with your chest on the ground... perspective was weird but many great memories... great vid
LOved this back in the day, LucasArts had some big hitters that made my pC (at the time) a Star Wars machine.....X Wing, TIE Fighter, XvT, Rebel Alliance.........man, you're getting me all misty eyed wishing for my childhood again
"Legends" as some call it will always be the truer form of canon in SW
I don’t blame you, Legends has better Star Wars content than most Disney has produced in recent years.
Canon is defined as whatever the priests like, and want to use against you - it is not what you prefer, and it is not for your benefit. Unless you seek to understand Star Wars by it's canon. It makes me genuinely angry, that you think it only exists to suck you off, specifically, out of the 8 billion people on earth... What about us, you think we are all inferior to you? Is that a threat, Sir? And by what logic do you pretend, we should all suffer for your gratification, hmmm? Are you trying to tell us, that you are a threat to sexy girls, and we need to lock you away forever, just to keep them safe?
Legends is the ultimate lack of understanding, the ultimate no-think-looks-cool. Luke Skywalker vs. Luuuuke... what are you, 5 years old? No plan, no point, no purpose. Limitless only because it is a LIE. Just a loser power-fantasy fan-fiction, shat out of thieving piggy-backers, who only came to steal your money. The very pinnacle of everything you claim to detest, in a paper thin sugar-coating, and you can't wait to reward them for their abuse of you... and it's YOU, isn't it? That's the big secret you're hoping to hide, behind your fascist, safe "opinion" parrotting? But when you beg for a pat on the back in that cowardly way, I'm going to punch you in the face, like you deserve!
I am saddened and disappointed, that you gravitate towards something so utterly conceited and selfish. Particularly, when I don't want to have sex with you, your insolent self-importance only reads as a beg to be hammered into the floorboards.
You attended class with Lucas, but you didn't learn a damn thing, too busy endlessly rotating around your own butthole.
You're embarrassing in your vulgar display of weakness and entitlement! Please stop talking.
Will definitely be picking this up!!! Great review. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Looks great! Will for sure pick it up! Great review! :)
I'm in this phase right now though where I kind of like to play older games closer to their original resolution. When emulating Gamecube or PS2 for example, I have loved to play the games in higher resolution and almost get that remaster feeling. But now I really like to stick to the original resolution (or closer to them at least) since textures and geometries works so well with it. What I am starting to feel in some of the remasters is that even if textures are more high res, geometries often stay the same, and it just makes everything so "boxy" and blocky. But depends on the game of course so it can be hit or miss for sure. :)
The view bobbing is something that BELONGS to these kind of games. Without it the characters seems to slide on ice.
I was playing this while a friend was over last week and they basically INSISTED I turn off the head bobbing. They couldn't stand it. LOL
@@MetalJesusRocks Hah they must've hated Doom back in the day, gotta love the things old games did to make more "realistic" movement
Please do more reviews Metal Jesus!
Some great Star Wars games came out in the 90s. I would love for Nightdive Studios to remaster X-wing and Tie Fighter.
When this came out it was the absolute bomb. It came out during the tail-end of the shareware demo era so even us kids with no cash could try it out. It was Star Wars heaven for gamers of that era. I remember being so impressed that your character could look up and down! Talk about cutting edge!
Yo Jason! Great review! I actually have the Collectors Metal Box which featured Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast but also included Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2 all for Windows 95/98. It also included a mini light saber on a key chain that lights up. It's very cool! 🤘🏻
If youre a console gamer but like keyboard and mouse support for those remasters of old games, this one allegedly has it on xbox. Quake does as well (dont know about quake 2), age of empires 2 also has k+m on xbox etc. Kind of an underrated feature for xbox. I wished Larian implemented this for baldur's gate.
Great review and attention to detail.
Oh man…I had no idea what you where talking about until I saw the big box art. Then it all came rushing back! So many memories so long long ago…….
I'm convinced I could listen to MJR talk about anything video game related. Never played the original, no desire to play the new version... but still watched the entire video 😂 Can always appreciate the work that went in to each video, as always great work man 👍🏻
AWESOME...thanks for the info Jason!!
You bet!
I really hope we see a mod community popup around this. It is a huge missed opportunity to not include optional ray tracing or bump maps which could really make this pop. I’ll bet AI could have a field day reproducing these textures too.
2:38 You can't change the control bindings to Legacy controls. If you set the left stick to turn, and the right stick to strafe, what will happen is it will have both turn and strafe at the same time on the left stick and on the right stick. Its an old game that allows you to revert to old graphics, so I think it should allow for the old 90s controls, and also that's how my brain is wired still.
i remember playing the Mac demo of this game over and over as a kid
Adding the compass feature like Quake 2 remaster did would help with the navigation issues. It works really well in Quake 2.
Jason Lewis started putting together a gorgeous Unreal5 remake a couple of years ago. The videos are still on his youtube channel, but no recent news about that project.
Yeah baby! Love this channel!
I'm really glad Nightdive once again delivered another great remaster. But I already own a copy of the original MS-DOS CD-ROM as well as the Steam version. The elephant in the room is The Force Engine source port, which finally let me finish the game from start to finish thanks to having in-level saves. The remaster looks great, but since I just finished the game a few months ago, I'm not in an immediate hurry to replay the game. Dark Forces has great gunplay, but the levels were pretty labyrinthine and by the time you got to the Detention Center, things can get pretty confusing.
I remember sneaking downstairs when my parents were asleep to play this on pc back in the 90’s! The sound of our computer booting up was nerve wracking! 😂
I hope this remaster is the first step to a remaster of the Jedi Knight series. A remastered Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy would be awesome.
Being able to look up and down was revolutionary for the genre at the time.
I remember back in 2000/2001 when my parents bought my brothers and me our first P.C.(a Compaq) from Radio Shack. The first three games I bought were Diablo II, Medal of Honor Allied Assault (the game time forgot), and Star Wars Jedi Knight II. JK II blew me away and I played through the game multiple times on Jedi Knight difficulty until I left for boot camp in 2002.
P.S: I also want to give a shout-out to Sim City 2000 which came with the P.C. That game got me hooked on sim games to this day.
JKII is still one of my favorite games of all time. I still play it from time to time.
As far as I know this is the prequel of the Jedi Outcast game which is my favourite Star Wars game. I have fond memories playing Jedi Outcast and I am glad to hear this available on modern consoles, considering its an original PC game. Though its not available where I am live. I happy with the remastered version since I never played the original, so I believe players like me will enjoy this version.
Yeah, sort of.
Dark Forces,
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight,
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast,
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.
man i have wanted to try this game for many many years now. this makes me excited
This looks great! I love the smoother, sharper graphics while keeping the simplicity of the geometry. There's a nice sense of artistry to the remaster. I might just have to pick this one up.
What a nice surprise. I'm gonna get this eventually. Thank for the review 😊😊😊
This it one of my faves on the pc years ago..
I will pick up the inevitable LRG physical release as I've done for all of Nightdive's games.
I had the original Mac version. There was an option to turn off the head bob or sway. I remember because it took me forever to figure out what that option meant.
What they should have done is included the compass feature that night dive put into their quake remasters. Would have helped a lot here
the music is so well redone
i had this game back in the day on my ps1. never finished. looking forward for this remaster for sure.
I for one am really happy they stuck to the classic look and didn't mess with it too much. I've never played this one back in the day, because it was on the index of our country (which means you were still allowed to buy or sell it, but you couldn't advertise it or put it openly in your shop). And ever since some retrospectives on Shadows of the Empire and the Jedi Knight Series I've been craving a classic mid-1990s Star Wars game. Finally got it! It's also great to remember a simpler time when there was just one trilogy and a growing but still manageable number of books and comics. 😊
(I am one of the few who don't mind any of Licas' changes or the prequels or the sequels, but I still like to go back in time from time to time and occasionally pop in the "GOUT" or Harmy's despeciaöized editions)
Gotta get it! Such a good classic. They gotta do the rest of the Dark Forces games. All were really fun. You are totally right they need all the Rebel Assualt games too. The i love the second one just as much as the first. Everyone will be a must buy for a Star Wars fan especially into the lore and legends or just The Star Wars Universe in video game form. Great review man! 🤘🤘
Very excited to play this. Fingers crossed they remaster Dark Forces 2 as well...
I only ever played Dark Forces II. My dad and I would download mod maps and characters and have 1 on 1 duels. Would love to see that come back.
Nice, I played it on PS1 back in the day. Now we finally have a Amiga port 🤘🏻
I still have the PSx Dark Forces running on my spare Android. Head bobbing was great because I had no rhythm 😂, I eventually started bobbing my real head in pace with my character rather than the music. It was so bad but I was fortunate enough to not be sick.
BAHWHAHAHA! This is my favorite comment today. 😂
I’m 53 now, but I played this game on my first PC, I believe it was a Windows 2000. I immediately fell in love with it. I never played a Doom style game before, so I was surprised how much fun it was. I still own the original game CIB, but I’m excited to play the remaster soon. Great video!
a 4K Rebel Assault collection would be awesome
That vault alone is interesting enough for me lol. I remember the box back in the 90s but never checked it out.
Loved OG Dark Forces! can't believe it's back with a new coat of paint! Love your content!!
You can remove the head movements also in the original version to make the gameplay a bit smoother
I am still hoping and praying for X-Wing and Tie Fighter remasters/rereleases! I also really wish they would fix the controls on Bounty Hunter as well, SO annoying!
Great video
Played this game when it first came out, those were the years!!
