Naruto - Pain's Philosophy

  • Pain is my favourite villain in the Naruto universe because of his philosophy, but also because of his leadership. Pain was terrifying, calculated, menacing and not to mention, he also had the best voice of any character in Naruto dubbed or subbed.

"There is no coming to consciousness without pain" would have been the better quote to use here, as Nagato not only sees the fallacy of righteousness(Heaven vs. Hell) but has found the answers to it through his painful experiences. I had to read some info about Carl Jung though to respond here, and I think he's my favorite psychiatrist now after reading his quotes!

Lukas Lukas lol now you’re quoting Nagato but basically I was saying that right and wrong are in the eyes of the beholder, and that the only people who can see right and wrong objectively (I mean those who can understand someone else’s view on right and wrong at least) are those whose definitions of right and wrong have changes due to tragedy in their lives.
For instance, Nagato originally saw good as guiding people down the path of friendship and mutual respect, but when Yahiko sacrificed himself he was forced to embrace the general view of right and wrong, being that righteousness is determined by the victor. He wouldn’t have been able to see past his own views had such deep pain not entered his life.

He was not gonna win against him 1v1 and i think the story teller wanted us to know that. This forced Naturo to realize that rage and aggression would not win and he needed to strategized which is why he generally wanted to know what happen to cause all of this. Afterwards he realized that he was a fool and need to come up with a new strategy to do what seemed impossible.
Naruto did not win vs Pain yes he defeated him but that was only with LOTs of help. And while everyone loves this Arc the most many also underestimate how powerful pain actually was in the grand scheme because of the 4th war.
Until you got the 10 tail Jinchūriki Pain was still the most powerful character in the show.
Itachi was probably the 2nd most powerful.
Tobi might be the 3rd as its hard to say i say tobi is weaker mostly because he Loses to many people in the show.
If not tobi id put the shark guy as the 3rd as it takes Guy to power up to very painful gates to beat him. Kinda makeing him the joke character but he was very powerful.
The Kages while very powerful them self's they almost always have backup. Team wise they are stronger then any of the akatsuki aside Pain of course. Pain needed Sage toads/ Sage naruto/ Big boss toads/ and 9tails to be defeated. And that was a Pain who recklessly used a lot of his power beforehand! to wipe out the village by him self. MT MT To counter the revenge part, that’s why Pain wanted to make the Ten Tails. It’s a weapon he would’ve used to crush any vengeance brewing in resistances. That’s how I understood it, at least. I do agree with that part. Nobody will rebel against something like that unless they have a plan, but if Pain killed Naruto, who was probably one of the strongest Shinobi alive at that point, all hope would’ve died with him and it would’ve been immensely easy to reform the Ten Tails at that point.

@@muhannabasalem574 Not out of selfishness, but because he thought, only when they experienced that pain, would they understand, that they never want it again, therefore building a generation of people who despise war. A generation that would probably want the best for their kids(the next generation), therefore teaching them the horrible pain of war, so that they may never start a new. So the reason he wanted everyone to experience that pain was, so that the peace afterwords could last longer(if not forever, if you're an optimist). At least that's what I believe, why he did all this.
Still after all, I think he had the right goal, the right reasons, he knew the current situation(cycle of hatred) better than anyone else, but he tried to solve it the wrong way. Cause if you sacrifice 20 in order to save 200, the relatives and friends of those 20 would suffer the pain of loss, thus creating hatred for the one they believe is responsible for it. And at least one of them will seek vengeance, to create their justice, therefore creating another group of people experiencing the pain of loss. That's the cycle he talked about, that's the cycle he wanted to break, but his way of breaking it was only another layer of that cycle, so without noticing it, Nagato too fueled the cycle of hatred, he so desperately wanted to break.
These are my thoughts on this subject, I'm not saying they're the truth everyone should believe. It's just what I believe.

I feel this philosophy also applies highly in reality when you look at it on a perceptive on how people with a similar rough background easily understand each other cause of how both parties have learnt to value peace, love, loved ones, food, water, shelter etc and this is because we mostly learn the importance of something we were suppose to after we lose it. So with pains philosophy if proved when everyone is faced with the tragedy of war and lose of loved ones then one will know and learn to value the peace they currently have even though it comes in fear.

I don't stab myself to appreciate not being hurt, nor do I starve myself to appreciate being able to eat. This philosophy also implies crippling somebody (say, purposefully damaging their eyesight, deafening them, numbing their Nervous System, etc.) would make them appreciate life in general. Just like death shouldn't make me value life (instead life itself makes me value life), pain of among the highest calibre shouldn't make me value peace.
Nagato assumed his philosophy was correct because he lost sight of the individual - understandable, considering there were those who worshipped him as a literal deity - thus assumed his experience meant he knew right. Yes, he always asked for alternatives, but you could chalk it up to most people who live in a world like Naruto being rather ill-equipped to talk philosophy (just look at the intelligence of the average Konohagakure citizen...). They'd rather talk competition, profit or otherwise show off, which is an intrinsic part of human nature and thus can't be ignored easily.

Nagato was actually acknowledging this flaw as he pointed out the cycle of hatred. It was as the analysis explained a rather utilitarian choice that through creating you‘ll rather gain real peace than through friendship/optimism which will let themself hurt by evil ppl.
It‘s the only choice possible for Pain to create peace in a realistic manner

I think the point of Nagato's story is that his experience of life told him that people hurt eachother, and when people are hurt they seek vengeance, creating a cycle of hatred. Naruto confirmed Nagato's expected behavior when he desired to get vengeance on Nagato for what he did, perpetuating hatred. But Naruto disproved Pain's philosophy and changed Nagato's mind when Naruto chose to overcome his hatred for Nagato in order to bring about understanding and peace. That's atleast a good chunk of the overall message and meaning.

Pein is my favourite character in the whole naruto universe. Comparing him with Naruto only made them both more interesting. One has given in to despair while the other still has hope. Both wanting the same goal but going about it in different ways. Ultimately Pein helped Naruto mature greatly greatly changing his philosophy slightly to a more realistic one. Pein is absolutely right in saying that we can truly understand each other only when we feel each other's pain. That having felt pain is the greatest motivation to seek peace and to want it for others.

I like how you handle these videos as an essay. I enjoy other narutubers but before I stumbled upon your channel I had a hard time finding any who expressed their thoughts in a coherent, structured way. You also showed similarities between Naruto and Western historical figures. There's a lot of people who explain the metaphors between Naruto and Japanese culture, which can easily be found on Wikipedia, but few have ever talked about the correlation between the west and this series. Basically: good shit, keep this shit coming.

in this world whether real or imaginary, philosphy is born out of all the experiences he had, whether good or bad. a person who suffered the longest and hardest can become the saviour and a person who never liked war, creates war. so i think that philosphy is born how people take the experiences in his mind.

He was not truly wrong because of his experience and what he went through. However, much like Kiritsugu. Who wished to be an ally of justice, the ends does not justify the means because you are only adding towards the problem. Rather than coming up with a proper solution. Personally, were it not for plot armor, I feel that Pein should've laughed at Naruto's talk no jutsu, because he was speaking from a very ignorant and foolish stand point. The only reason why he even forgave Pein was because he tied his own story, to theirs. Which he done to several characters on numerous occasions. Pein, Obito and Sasuke are perfect examples. All three have done horrific and unspeakable things to humanity as a whole, destroyed lives, families and the like for their selfish desires and goals. Sure Naruto wanted to talk, but he lost his shit several chapters ago when he believed that Hinata was killed.
He even did the same thing when Orochimaru mentioned Sasuke, in the end he is nothing but talk. Though I do admit that Pein was a very well done and interesting character. Kudos to Kishimoto on that. Just wished his other characters actually had some sort of value or something to make them more realistic. Like the characters from my hero academia.

Well you know, in the end it was the 4th war and the pain caused by "Akatsuki" that actually ended wars between the nations, united them and in the Long run kept a peace going. So Nagato was right all along. Also unlike Sasuke or Obito, Nagatos reasons for killing other Killers and potential revenge Killers was not for his own selfish deiers but for the shared dream of many by archieving peace. And as mentioned before it was pain and war that united the world. Not just peace and love, and talk. And it was this realism that set's Nagato appart from Obito or Sasuke. Because he was actually during a war on a literar battlefield. All his childhood he has seen pain , death , suffering, hunger etc. All the atroceties of war no Child should witness, and that went on with loosing his parents in a brutal way infront of his eyes, accidently killing People and having to deal with that fact. Then going through hunger himself and watch People being all selfish and hoarding Food despite being possibly able to spare a tiny bit. Meeting a Little dog, Konan Yahiko. Getting the shared dream to stop all suffering in the world and end all wars making every Nation equal. Then loosing his dog, getting over it and still go on with his Goal into early adulthood. Still traumatised i assume. Then being so Close to freeing all of Amegakure by allying with Hanzo who abandoned his previous Goal of freeing the rain for power and betrayed them. Ending with Konan almost dying, and Yahiko having to sacrafice himself. Loosing his best friend and the Naruto like Charakter that kept them going. After saving Konan and killing Hanzos People finding out all other Akatsuki members died. Not knowing it was Obito and beliving it was Hano. Etc. He was manipulated into hate yes, but his reasoning did proof right. And he has a realistic way of mentaly growing into this way of thinking. Unlike Obito who wants to execute his plan because Rin died, or Sasuke who wants to destroy an entire Village because some Superiors used his brother.

Trafalgar Water D. Law Well, to be fair, Sasuke had a better mindset on achieving peace than Obito, whereas, Obito wasn't about achieving peace, he was about living in an illusion from reality instead trying to save it, which to means adding fire to the fuel.

The thing that hurts me in all of this is that in the end, despite all the efforts of our protagonists, despite all that why Naruto, Jiraya and the others fought, In the end Nagato (Pain) was right. After an Ephemeral peace, the cycle of hatred resumes. You can see it in Boruto. And the thing that marks me the most in Pain's words is when he tells Naruto that humans are not the most intelligent creatures in the universe, I never understood what Pain meant at that time, I realize now that he was speaking consciously or unconsciously of Ôtsutsuki.

All this heavy burden they carry, their philosophy, shows us that they are only victims of the cruel ninja world, like many other people thought to be evil in real life. Before we judge someone, we should really look in their past...

The pain ark is 100% my favourite ark in Naruto, There's were too many amazing moments throughout it, pains speech is one of my favourites, Hinata's fight/confession/death? was actually my favourite scene in the show, Naruto vs pain was dope, Naruto almost becoming the nine-tails and meeting his dad was awesome and Pains backstory did a great job at making you see the world through his eyes. Honestly may be my favourite ark in any anime I've watched.
