Also all the imperfection of the wood makes it so special. I want the violin! I started violin in the fourth grade at my elementary school. I played up until halfway through 6th grade when we moved out of state and my new school didn’t offer a strings/orchestra program, only band. Since my family wasn’t in a position to financially support private lessons, my violin days came to a sad and premature end. Fast forward some years later and here I find myself captivated by the violin world once again. Enough to watch with utter delight the birth of dear Crispy. Judging by how much time I spend watching others play violin, it may just be time for me to get back into it myself and cheer up that sad little 6th grader in me who let go before she was ready. Crispy would be a great companion on that journey together. Either way though, thank you for doing this series! It was really fascinating to watch it go from a pile of parts to an actual playable instrument. Very cool!

I want the violin! I want the violin! I want the violin! I want the violin! I am a 55-year-old professional symphony orchestra tuba player who would like to learn to play the fiddle pretty badly as I head toward my retirement.
I have my own repair shop for brass instruments and have a deep appreciation for recycled instrument parts (Let them live again!), homebrew instruments, and people who build things with their own hands.
I love woodworking but have never considered luthier work despite years of servicing stringed instruments, and your video series on Crispy has made me want to look into learning this craft, which is an extension into something I already do. I have a love for specialized hand tools, too.
I play the upright bass on the side and would love to own my own carefully crafted violin, despite (or perhaps because of) the questionable origin of its parts.
I think you did a wonderful job with this instrument. I love instruments like this. I am currently taking a nearly destroyed student tuba and creating a very nice professional instrument out of its parts. What I am doing with it, what you did with Crispy, is fascinating work for me. Perhaps I will use it to motivate me to build my own instrument, which would be a 17" viola for my chunky fingers. So… Pick me! Pick me! ;-)
Seriously, sir, you did some excellent work on Crispy, turning dubious wood into something with a beautiful voice. You learned a lot in the process. What could be better than that?
Stay healthy and virus-free. I will keep watching your videos.
    Cheers from Mississippi!

I want the violin! I learned so much watching your series on building Crispy and I’ve been learning more about music since COVID happened. I would love a chance to learn a string instrument! Thanks for doing this!

Interesting. Your last comments were to avoid doing a DYI kit, and spend money on a better violin. That may work for some, but a few months ago I bought a kit. I wanted to learn what a violin was really. My Great Grandfather had made some. I made a few mistakes, but in the end, I got some sound. I know so little, I did not know rosin was needed. I learned so much building my violin, I am sure it sounds a bit less than a student violin. It was worth the $60 for the kit, and another $60 for tools. It was fun, and gave me a few weeks of entertainment and education. Watching your video is helping me to see what some of my mistakes were. I don't think the kits are for a luthier to use, but more for someone like me, and a much lower level.

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Před 2 lety +1

I don't know who these kits are targeted to. As far as I can tell (from mine at least), they are a way for a factory to get some extra cash for their rejected parts, offering them out there to whoever dares try to put them together. 😉
But I do agree that it could be a fun project for some, like you described your own experience. 👍
Did you get any videos or recordings of it? I'd love to see it!
The part I have a problem with is the marketing. The boastful language they use, saying it's 'easy', and, 'high quality', and you might have seen mine at least was none of those things. These kits are no replacement to getting a proper violin, they are a very roundabout way to making something that /maybe/ will sound good.
I understand violins are pricy, so it's likely that some would see "violin kit, only $60!", and think "hey maybe I can make a good instrument without shelling out a whole lot of $$$", and for the average person, that's unlikely to happen.
(specially if they don't have tools, like our TwoSetViolin friends 😉 )

I would love to to this just to build one and be able to appreciate the art of doing it. There are way more things that you can spend your money on but building a violin from a kit like this would be a fantastic thing to accomplish. Thanks for the video and I only wish you could do one with a lot more info on the little things you were doing so I could learn more!😉

I want the Violin! I started violin a long time ago before switching to cello. My original violin was a hand-me down from our concert mistress when I couldn't take it anymore and wanted to learn a string instrument (I was a brass player at the time). I couldn't afford anything so she gave me a violin with a hole in it's side from accidentally being rammed into a desk. It was a cheapy violin so it didn't matter and I did my best with it. I have a wonderful cello now and even a cheapy violin but I outgrew. I'd love to give Crispy a loving home and plenty of enjoyable play time as I revisit Violin during quarantine.

I love violins. I could never have afforded a quality violin and wasn't interested in a common manufactured one. I found a luthier in my area while having repairs on my guitar. After getting to know him I inquired about his charge for a custom built Guarnari model. For 9 months I watched and admired this skill and talent while making payments as I could. That was 12 years ago. I love my violin. It's my baby. Much respect to luthiers and their work.

Wow! You did an amazing job. I actually just ordered one of these kits and I came here to see what was involved in putting it together. I have to say you have me concerned that I will not be able to do it :-(. The good thing is I bought it not to play it but as a decoration. I am making it into a memorial for my aging horse. I am having a local violin shop string an old bow of mine with his tail hairs and I wanted a raw wood violin so I could burn a picture of him on it along with his name and so on. Luckily I have also ordered another fingerboard, chin rest and tailpiece that has mother of pearl inlay with a scroll and horse design on it so perhaps i won't have the same problem as you with misalligned holes but I am concerned of all of the shaving and cutting that needs to be done. I am not as confident that I will be able to do that properly. Good thing I didn't have my hopes up on playing it. It would have been nice but I don't have the mad woodworking skills that you have. Great job! I am just sad I found your video too late to participate in the contest! Thanks for putting this video together. I am sure I will be referencing it quite a bit in the coming months.

I'm sad that I don't qualify for the giveaway because I live across the Pacific Ocean... but I was excited to finally see this all come together into a violin that is just fine. I think it's very wholesome and inspirational to see you show that the kit, obviously put together for a quick buck with zero expectations of it ever really becoming a violin, become something that works just fine. It took a lot of time and hard work, but I have to say this was a wonderful journey to have been a part of in this 2020 to know that it might take a lot of effort but things will turn out okay somehow. :) Thank you for giving Crispy life and hope whoever wins it will put it to good use :)

    I want the violin!
i am new to learning to play violin (09/2020) and also learning about the violin. i love the fact that a cheap parted violin could be made into something so beautiful, whether playable or not...playable factor makes it better. this is the type of violin i would chose over any other violin because it challenged the person building it and both them and others have learned from it. for me, violin isnt just about playing the violin, but also about learning as much as possible about it.
personally im glad you had an "issue" with stain and had to go darker. looks better.
