A' Bhruaich - Fraserburgh at War / Little London

Fraserburgh (known locally as "The Broch") can claim three holders of the Victoria Cross, an outstanding number of Britain's highest military award for such a small fishing town. During the Second World War (1939-45) Fraserburgh became known as "Little London". The German Luftwaffe targeted merchant convoys, which sailed close-by the coastline. Before returning to their air base in Trondheim, Norway, they would unload their unused bombs .... on Fraserburgh.

My grandfather James MacAllan Thomson who was a baker was the provost during the war. He died in 1947. These photos really bring home to me the extent of the bombing of Fraserburgh, which I knew about from my dad.

Of course the London Office of the town's largest employer; Consolidated Pneumatic Tool Co Ltd; were moved close to Fraserburgh during the war. The company made parts for Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and Bofors guns. The Fraserburgh factories escaped major damage during the war.
