ARP Odyssey - What a monster!

- I recently got my beloved ARP Odyssey back from restoration after more than two years! But it was so worth the wait.
The Oddy (pun intended) can be a bit intimidating at first glance: No pitch and modwheels, sliders instead of knobs, a bit of a quirky layout... combined with its surprisingly complex modulation capabilities, this puts the ambitious synthesist on the quest for the "taming of the unruly".
After spending some quality time with this now fully restored beauty, I get in touch with her soul deeper and deeper and I just performed a little improvised sound meditation, pushing the amazing 4023 filter of this rare whiteface mk I to places where no Behringer clone will ever go... ;-)

Vor 46 Jahren hat mir mein Bruder einen Roland Synth geschenkt. So habe ich mit der "Droge" angefangen. Ich ging jeden freien Tag arbeiten, um mir Synths zu kaufen. Es war dann ein Odyssey mit Sequencer, ARP 2600, ein Roland System 100 und ein DX7. Ich habe sehr viel Zeit damit verbracht, verstehen zu lernen, wie alle mögliche Klänge entstehen können. Und wenn ich dich spielen höre, vermisse ich meine damaligen Instrumente sehr. Freunde von mir hatten den Quadra, Polymoog, PPG's und sogar hatte ich mal die Geglegenheit den Fairlight in einen Studio damals live in Action zu sehen und zu spielen. Ich war in dieser Zeit sehr unverlässlich. Statt mich mit meiner Freundin auf Zeit zu treffen, meine Freunde zu sehen, bin ich in den Tiefen und Höhen der Odyssey hangen geblieben. Ich wollte damals auch einen Mini Moog, aber ich war der Meinung, diesen nicht kaufen zu müssen, weil ich so happy mit der Kombi Odyssey und mit dem Sequenzer war. Ich war auch total fasziniert, wie sich die OSC und Filter meiner ARPs nach Std. auch noch veränderten.
Meine damalige Freundin stellte mir die Frage: Synths oder Freundschaft...??? So habe ich die Synths verkauft und den Odyssey MK III und den 1623er behalten und später einem Freund verschenkt. Ich habe nun ein paar Jahre digital Klänge designt, ein paar Projekte in Cubase angelegt, aber nie wirklich Zeit gefunden, die Musik wie du sie spielst und machst zu verwirklichen.

During the 60s and 70s, German hippies made some killer music (Guru Guru, Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream...) and you are still carrying the torch!

That was a joy to watch.
It might go where no Behringer clone goes, but most of us mere mortals do not have the chance of getting access to the great classic synthezisers so don´t be too hard.
Nice to hear somebody who both knows how to play and who understands the synth, both things are a rarity nowadays and the combination of the two almost non-existant.
It’s not a Ferrari for Christ sake. Vintage Odysseys can still be had for under $1000 if you keep an eye out.
Great stuff. Really enjoyed watching this performance. I had an Oddy MKII for a few years, and ended up selling because there was just a fundamental aspect of the sound that I just could not gel with. Coming from a background of learning synthesis on Moogs, the ARP sound strikes me as abrasive and metallic, and somewhat rigid in a way that does lend it a distinct identity separate from the warm saturated, sizzling fat of the Moogs. I just prefer the Moog sound though. I do think the Odyssey outperforms the Moogs in terms of odd cosmic modulations though. I’m actually here for that Juno arpeggio!

These original synths will be maintainable and repairable for a long, long time, while Behringer devices will have been landfill for many years.
I keep coming back to this video.... your command of the everything from the Juno 60 and Odyssey right down to the Space Echo is quite a performance. I must say I am envious of that Odyssey!

Amazing as alway, Marius. That Odyssey cuts so well. The timbre is very different that the Model D. You can hear it in Stevie Wonder and know straight away that you're not hearing a Minimoog. Thanks for posting.
Thank you! I agree with you on the instant distinction between the Minimoog and the Odyssey. Especially the mk I with its unique filter. On most of the Stevie Wonder recordings, we might hear the similar sounding ARP 2600 though.
@leicht While Stevie DID indeed have an Odyssey as well as a 2600, and access to a pair of 2600's in TONTO I was mostly referring to the character of the ARP sound and filter you demonstrate so well.

The AARP Odyssey seemed to me, as a player, like the female sound, compared to the masculine tones of the Moog.
Is it the one that made by Korg?
