    If you are thinking about buying a new pair of prescription glasses and want to order glasses online, this video will walk you through it. Buying glasses online can be a great way to find cheap, affordable eyewear, but can be a little tricky if you are not sure what to look for. To order prescription glasses online, there are many considerations to account for regarding the size and shape of the glasses frame and what glasses lenses may be best for you.
    *PRO TIP*
    No matter where you buy your glasses it is always best to have them professionally adjusted to improve their fit and comfort. It will help you see better too.
    If you are looking to purchase online glasses, it is important to continue seeing your eye doctor yearly for eye health evaluations. Although you may be seeing well, many eye diseases may creep up without affecting your eyesight until it's too late.

      Great video. What do you do if the glasses do not fit physically on your face, or you do not see clearly that may be an adjustment to do with the lens itself? It seems like I can't get my medical insurance provider to get the glasses made correctly; pupils don't seem to be where the clear spot is on the lens, and they don't coordinate my eyes very well. Have had them remake the glasses up to two or three times in a row in the past. They don't used mechanical devices to detect the center my pupils like one out of business Eye Care place used to do decades ago.

      I went to eye doctors in 2016 because my vision quality had suddenly dropped sharply. The eye doctor said I had perfect vision and he didn't understand why I was there...I had near 20/05 vision before I went in to get my vision checked. He laughed at me as he sent me away.
      Turns out this was the first sign of a massive brain tumor that would go on to take up 1/5 of my brain. I am lucky it wasn't cancerous...but I am so frustrated with that doctor.
      Do eye doctors normally ignore sudden drops in vision quality so long as it is 20/20?

    From my experience it's quite simple. Single vision - fill your boots! Anything that requires an accurate PD or fitting height such as PALs, digital lenses, bifocals etc. - proceed with caution! There's nothing worse than trying to adapt to an expensive pair of progressives where the PD is out by a couple of mm and you can't return them free of charge for a re-lens or refund.

    • @MartinNeep
      @MartinNeep Před 4 měsíci +3

      GlassesOn does a reasonable job, but it only measures binocular PD and uses the distance between the centre of the pupils. In most cases, this is sufficient for single vision lenses. For PALs however you need an accurate monocular PD that measures the distance between the visual axis. Often the visual axis is slightly medial to the centre of the pupil. A dedicated pupilometer will measure the corneal reflex light to determine this.

    One thing I would recommend is if you are considering Transitions as a lenses option I would try looking at sunglass frames first and finding multiple pairs you like.
    Probably over 90% of the time sunglass frames are available as eyeglasses as well. So now you want to see what one you like most as an eyeglass.
    Biggest mistake Transitions buyers make I feel is getting a frame that is way to small to be effective coverage making them bad sunglasses and it just doesn’t look natural as sunglasses. So this really fixes the issue.

    I don't like to disrespect a professional, especially when they have treated me as a valuable customer for years. But when the discount chains became huge, I was going to order Varilux Transitions and the optometrist quoted something like $630. I told him, I value your care, your quality, and your attention to detail. But the same thing will cost me $375 at Costco, and while I can't expect you to match that, is there something we can do about this? He went to speak with the owner, and $630 became $425, with everyone quite happy.
    The invisible variations in everything and price are simply incredible, when so many of the products often are the same.

      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 měsíci +13

      I hear that. There are a lot of factors that go into the economics and price of glasses, especially in a local shop that may be accepting things like insurance (lots of crazy issues with contracts). Perhaps I should do a video on it.

  • @katec.4361

    When shopping online for glasses, I think the first measurement to look for is the total frame width to see if they’ll even fit. Then I’ll look at the bridge width, and then the lens dimensions.
    Having a mm ruler comes in handy (also useful for buying jewelry online).
    And if you have a flatter nose, you want to look for “low nose bridge” glasses.

      I have had cataracts and have implants. Both are set for far vision and I have astigmatism. I like to shoot pistol on a range. I cannot see the sights clearly due to the settings. If had the reading lense on the dominant eye and the far lense on the non-dominant eye, do you think that would work? Would a third party optical place like Walmart do this for me with a standard prescription, or would I have to get a special one from the doctor? Any favorite brands for shooting glasses?

    Hello, Dr Allen. I have a very important question to ask you. I’ve just started to wear a spectacle with progressive lenses. The lenses are from Zeiss and they are phenomenal! But I also have a powered sunglass from my earlier prescription. This sunglass is a single-vision one (for my nearsightedness) and the lenses are from Essilor Xperio. The power of farsightedness in this sunglass is almost the same as the new progressive one. Can I wear these sunglasses when I go outside? Or will it harm my vision because now I have a progressive vision? Please advise.

    Excellent instructional video! But I have to say that I am so tired of being "sold" on high index lenses. I order from an online eyeglass provider that thankfully allows me to order any of their lens options with my -9.50 prescription. Several years ago when I was low on cash (but high on diopters, LOL), I ordered their 1.56 index lenses in a progressive no less. I admit I was shocked that I couldn't tell the difference in my vision compared with 1.74 index lenses. No distortion (and boy how many times was I told there would be intolerable distortion), and no noticable weight increase (my secret was to order an 8g weight frame.) My latest online order was for 1.59 polycarbonate lenses and once again, they're completely fine, no issues, no complaints. It makes me sad to look back on years of paying as much as $800 for 1.74 high index lens progressives in frames from the "value line" frames from a local optician when my most recent order cost $77.85. And it makes me angry when I recall how many opticians and labs refused to make my lenses in anything less than 1.74 high index.

    This video is fantastic. A while ago, I had to order glasses online because the glasses that I got from the eye doctor's office was way too big. They seemed big during the fitting, but the worker told me that if they were too big, they could be adjusted to fit me. When the glasses came in, they kept sliding down my face, even after adjustments. The office wouldn't take them back and I couldn't afford to buy a new pair from them, so I had to order a pair online. Honestly, it was really good to know about the lens index. Yeah, I knew that it was thinner and lighter, which isn't a huge deal for me, but the biggest thing you mentioned was motion sickness. I have ZERO depth perception, which would require extremely thick prism to correct, so I just don't bother (I was born with a lazy eye, it got surgically corrected, but between that and patch therapy, never fully fixed the problem - although I do hear that VR training for both kids and adults is doing amazing things). If I'm in a vehicle for longer than an hour, I start getting sick. Faster if I don't eat, and even faster if I'm sitting in the back seat of a vehicle (city buses can be rough too depending on how much of a lead foot the driver has).

    I had some progressive sunglasses made about 10 years ago and they did a good job with them. Had no issue with them since I sent the original pair with the old prescription to the vendor. This gave them the advantage that the PD and segment height was already factored into the old lenses.

    Great video! I've ordered glasses from Zenni a number of times with good results. You've touched on the key issues; in particular taking measurements from an older pair of glasses that fit well makes it a lot easier to choose the right size frame. If you wear progressive lenses, it's a good idea to get adjustable nose pieces in case the height of the frame needs to be tweaked to better position the reading portion of the lens. The oil resistant AR coating is definitely worth paying a little extra for. 👍👍

    The PD is the biggest problem, as they don't include this in the prescription in the UK, and they are sheepish about giving it to you. I've measured it myself, but never sure if 1-2mm either way makes so much difference. having said that, the last local shop I went to didn't bother measuring the PD either - they were basically just operatives for an online site in the same way I could do myself (better) in the comfort of my own home...

    • @DoctorEyeHealth

      Yeah I understand where clinics are coming from. They are frustrated because they are middled by glasses manufacturers and insurance companies - they get paid very little for their time and expertise and then people don't buy glasses and instead buy elsewhere. A lot of eye clinics are at risk of going out of business because of this or they will have to drastically change their business models.
      With that being said, I understand why some clinics charge for the PD measurement (especially if they are using pupillometers which help measure PD with extreme accuracy) as they had to purchase that equipment and it isn't always cheap.
      But in order to do a refraction properly, the phoropter (instrument people use to measure the glasses rx), needs to be set for the correct PD anyway. So it is very much part of the refraction procedure. The only challenge is that the phoropter only works in binocular PD - where some people require monocular PD for the most accuracy in their lenses.

      For a progressive or varifocal, 2mm will definitely make a difference. I would be wary of anyone dispensing varifocals without measuring PD using either a corneal reflex pupilometer or a digital alternative like Zeiss Visufit.

    I’m nearsighted (-0.5 in both eyes) with an astigmatism, my glasses are great for driving but for computer use my monitor is just far enough away that I want that astigmatism correction but when I wear my glasses it feels like it “focuses” my eyes further away than my monitor. Could I order a pair with a lower PD to “focus” my eyes to the screen? Similar to reading glasses even though I’d still want it to be a negative prescription?

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Changing the PD of glasses can result in negative consequences to eyesight and comfort. It could even cause problems with the eye muscles leading to eyestrain and...depending on the person, could cause other issues with eye alignment and dominance perhaps.
      If someone is having problems up close, such as staring at a computer monitor, it would be best to have an assessment by a doctor to prescribe computer glasses with the appropriate powers. Changing the PD alone would not be appropriate.

      Hopefully the Dr. will answer, but I think you need to adjust mostly the SPH values (not sure about the PD.) Computer glasses focus at about arm's length or slightly less, that is somewhere in the range 20-28", or 50-70cm. To have the focus at that distance, you'd need to ADD about +1.50 (for up-closer laptop usage maybe better +1.75) to your SPH values on both eyes, still preserving the exact same values you might have for CYL and AXS (if you have any astigmatism.) Hopefully he will corroborate or rectify this.

    Hi Doctor, you said that most people choose their lenses set for distance with monofocal lens implants with cataract surgery. Why is that? Why not near? It seems like it would make sense to have them set for near since you need the near vision for so many things including PUTTING YOUR CONTACTS IN. So, can you tall me why distance is better? Thank you.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Good question! This came up with a patient of mine yesterday. Some people do in fact choose to have single vision monofocal implants put in that are set for near instead of distance. In my experience, this works better for people who have already been moderately nearsighted their whole lives. That way they have already been used to wearing glasses to see in the distance. The challenge is that some people who choose this, later regret the decision. Which is something that no doctor wants. So when someone is thinking of having that type of lens put in, we usually review it with them many many times and also have them sign a form that we discussed everything with them too.

    I have purchased online glasses here in Germany, so far the experience has been great. In fact, besides the normal glasses I have also purchased special use-case glasses specifically for watching TV at about 2 m (SPH values with +0.50 added,) for computer usage (for focusing at arm's length distance, so with +1.50 added to my SPH values), and for reading (with +2.50.) In all of this I never changed the PD values though, yet the glasses all work great for me. After reading another comment here, I do wonder if for reading glasses one should better adequately shorten the PD distances? From what I can tell taking selfies with a ruler on my face, my interpupilary distance goes from about 68 mm when looking into the distance to about only 58 when reading.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Technically speak, yes, reading only glasses should have a smaller PD which can be measured easily with a millimeter ruler. Otherwise local eye clinics can help measure for it too. Otherwise the prismatic effect of the glasses may contribute to eye strain.

      @@DoctorEyeHealth Ok just saw an older video of yours that you listed in the description (how to measure your PD) where you indicate that for reading glasses typically the rule is to substract 3 mm from the total interpupilary distance, and this matches what one of the Zenni pages says. Hello Doc. Joe! THANKS for this. Can you talk about the importance of P.D.? It seems SO important that many eye doctors who also sell glasses simply won't give your P.D. until you buy a pair of $800 plus glasses from them. My eyes are so bad I MUST have multiple pairs for driving and reading. I cannot afford $800 each for four to six pairs of glasses. I must buy glasses on-line instead. So, the last time I went to the eye doctor, I developed a trick. I watched the doctor's assistant, and she did not alter the machine she used to develop my prescription once she was done. I waited for her to leave the room after putting dilating drops in my eyes, and then I got out of the chair and took a photo of the machine's settings -- which had my P.D. displayed on her side of the machine -- turns out the P.D. of my eyes is different! It is SO unacceptable that an eye doctor will not give you your P.D. unless you get very angry with them and remind them of the LAW here in Connecticut. Even then, they will deflect and not give you the P.D.

      @DoctorEyeHealth  Před 4 měsíci +8

      There is a lot to the economics of it. Of course the cost of overhead and paying local staff a living wage - that goes into the cost because the local shop has to make a profit. The quality of the materials and products they choose to sell plays a role as many local stores cannot even buy glasses from the vendors they use at a cost as low as some online opticals offer.
      The other factor people don't see is the control of insurance companies. Many clinics offer "vision insurance" which is offered through companies who also...own the frame, lenses, etc. And those insurance contracts require the stores to give large discounts on their products to the people who carry the insurance. So because of these large discounts - they local store has to increase their prices dramatically because otherwise they would LOSE money on selling glasses. And it would be illegal to charge a higher price for some customers vs others. SO the price of the glasses have to go way up for EVERYONE.
      And unfortunately, many insurance plans only reimburse the clinic/doctor about 35-40 dollars for their time in the exam room, which is why you see some doctors having to see a patient every 5-10 minutes (which I fear can drive poorer quality of care). That leaves the clinic in hope you would buy glasses from them to make up the difference.
      Again, it can get complex. Perhaps a good video?
