Final bout of the Fifth fencing event of the 2022 to 2023 Season - 2022 Cairo Men's Foil Fencing Individual World Cup - Between Alexander MASSIALAS (USA) and Tommaso MARINI (Italy)
On the Left: Alexander MASSIALAS of Team USA (FIE Rank 7)
Massialas was the child prodigy of the generation before Marini. Massialas was the FIE World Number 1 during the Seasons of 2015-16 and 2016-17, and Silver Medalist at the 2015 Individual World Championships and 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Season of 2021-2022 was the first season where Massialas fell out of the top 10 world ranking since Season of 2011-2012. Massialas missed the 2022 Cairo World Cup due to testing positive to Covid-19
Alex's father, Greg Massialas, is the Team USA Senior Men's Foil Head Coach. During this season, Massialas won the 2023 Paris World Cup.
On the Right: Tommaso MARINI of Italy (FIE Rank 1)
Marini is the prodigal son of the Italian Team. At 22 years old, Marini jumped from World Number 38 to World Number 1 in the Season of 2021/22 by winning Gold at the Incheon Grand Prix, Belgrade World Cup, and winning Silver at the Cairo World Championship and Antalya European Championship. Marini was also a very difficult junior, having won Silver at the 2018 Verona Junior World Championships, and Silver at the 2018 Senior Anaheim Grand Prix by beating both Daniele GAROZZO and Alessio FOCONI.
During this season, Marini won the 2022 Tokyo World Cup
    Previous Match-Ups:
In 2019, Marini defeated Massialas in the quarterfinals of the Anaheim Grand Prix to win his first Senior FIE Medal

5:45 why did the refs abstain from giving a touch. Isn’t it clearly marinis because Alex is counterattacking??

He’s not counter attacking that’s just how he angulates to hit sometimes. Refs know that he’s trying to attack there even if it looks a hair funky which is why it isn’t called as a counter attack. The ref abstained because neither fencer was really attacking, marini didn’t really commit to the attack in prep and Alex as you pointed out, was basically counter attacking.

7:24 How is this not Massialas' point? To me it looked like a change of timing, not a pause.

Massialas used all his video at the moments, it would be his if he has video.

Does anyone know why Marini was carded at 3:28? I can hear Massialas complaining that Marini is parrying him but to my knowledge that behaviour is encouraged, is he just covering target area with his shoulder and upper arm and that's what Massialas means?

it's hard to tell, to me I don't see anything wrong with his actions...

yeah looks like Marini covered the side of his body with his arm

Yeah you can see Massialas indicate his own non-weapon arm with his foil as he's arguing for the card, and he gets it. Marini kind of bends his back shoulder down to the point where his torso is essential square with Massialas, and then gets his back arm in the way of Massialas' blade as he's trying to find the target. Totally normal/reasonable covering call
