- In Episode 50 of ‘Cars, Shops & Collections’ we visit Tony Thomas the owner of a spectacular 1970 Plymouth GTX!

What makes this a 1-of-1 Plymouth GTX? Tony drops a cool little fact about the color scheme of this GTX that makes it extra special! Also in this episode Tony introduces us to his daughter Jenna who is following in her father’s footsteps and has begun building incredible cars.

I like this video. I am in the process of restoring my 1970 GTX. 440-6 air grabber hood. 727 automatic with 3:23 8 3/4 rear. I have owned the car since 1981. It has been in my garage and off the road since 1991. Engine is rebuilt and I have already put new shocks on all four corners. Total rebuilt front end and all 4 of the drum brakes rebuilt and lined. I have all the interior pieces but the seat covers. I am just waiting on the 2800 stall converter and a high torque mini starter. I think I should be driving it by mid summer. This is inspiring to watch. What a beautiful GTX.
This is so cool! I would love to see pictures... if you are close to Vegas we should come do an episode when its done!
@@CarsShopsAndCollections I wish I did live close. But I am on the east coast Kannapolis NC. I finished a 1970 Challenger 10 years ago. I drive it weekly. It only needs a few more things to completely finish it. But are you really ever finished. I have done a few projects in my garage. A 1986 Conquest TSI with a 2jz transplant. One of my sons cars. Also my other son, we put a Maxima V-6 into his Altima. I just finished a 1991 Stealth R/T and installed a Twin Turbo j spec motor. Front wheel drive TT. I also had a posi transaxle put in this car. Runs pretty good. So last year I started the process of restoring my GTX. Guy’s gotta stay busy, right. I have pics of most of these projects. Just let me know if you want to take a peek?
Exquisite, absolutely gorgeous GTX.
My dad had one new till 1985, B5 blue 440 4 speed 4.10 geared Dana, was our family car all that time, winter driven in Quebec Canada. Sold it with 140.000 miles and still had the original clutch. I've been looking for it since 1987. This one is stunning in black!
Such a cool story behind your car! I can see it now driving in the snow. Let me know if I can help find it!
One bitchin' ride. A very proud owner who drives it, not stores it.
Love the 426 !!!! Nice car too !
Awsome GTX !
I can safely say I’ve never seen one of these, and I am 56. Seen them in Magazines but not in person. Been to a lot of car shows thro the years and never seen one. So cool! Thank you
I appreciate you watching! Tony did a wonderful job bringing this GTX back to life!
Awesome car! I heard the "X" back in the day was gonna mean eXperimental.
Interesting! Thanks for the nugget!
Gtx kinda looks like the 70 roadrunner , jc thanks for another awesome video!!!!
Thanks Frank...I appreciate the support!
A GTX is a “luxury Roadrunner” for those who wanted a premium muscle car. Base GTX is a 440, lots of chrome, buckets and console. Could not get a 383. Six pack or hemi and other options were available.
Awesome episode and a badass ride.
So much fun doing the ride-along!
Beast of a car😊😊😊
Truly is!
I'm done... that is the Baddest clean classic muscle car...well, IMO. So much more out there, we all can live the "Speed Racer" days ✌️💪👆😎💯✨🎶🤟
Yes! So CLEAN!
As always you crushed it with another sweet car.
Wow - THANK YOU!
What a nice and rare car. Plymouth Division only made 76 Hemi GTX cars in 1970. 43 of them were 4 speed cars and 33 of them were auto trans cars. Oh ya I forgot... I own one of the Hemi auto trans cars... Pretty much in show room condition with mostly original components that are in perfect shape.
Did you sell yours??? Sound awesome!
Great Episode! I love that his daughter is involved with her own car ❤
Neat to see Tony passing on his knowledge!
Beautiful car. I'm 59 and have only seen one GTX in the wild and it was a clone back in the mid 90s.
It's not a common one you see around.... Thank you for watching!
I’m a proud owner of a curious yellow ‘71 GTX..😊
Love the color!
Nice GTX
Yeah appreciate you sharing your beautiful GTX with us wow is it just beautiful I love it I’ll be following for more love old-school cars
I appreciate it! Tony did a remarkable job... on deck is his daughter's road runner!
I Love this Car. Nices..... Hemi. 4 Speed.
A true classic!!!! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Mopar .
Really fantastic episode and a stunning car! That Plymouth looks incredibly tough. Tony did a great job! As for the "GTX" name, according to Jack Smith (manager of Plymouth's product planning group) it was only a business decision. They couldn't use GTO, so they came up with GTX🙂 That "X" is just a letter. Overall the car is called as Gentleman's Muscle Car or Gentleman's Hot Rod. But some designations are worth it. For example "Great Tiger Exterminator"😄 But I call it "Gee Tyrannosaurus reX"😉
I appreciate the info! Very interesting... and YES Tony did an amazing job, he's a very talented builder!
Mean Looking American Muscle !
Yes! Fun ride along as well!
Wow I’m in love beautiful GTX, when I was 18 young and dumb I had a 1969 road runner 383 for speed black with buckskin interior sure wish I still had it
I love these cars. His daughter loves this car so unfortunately no man can ever hold a candle vehicle wise. I'm 23 and I'm hunting for one of my own.
Good luck with your search… keep us posted!
@@CarsShopsAndCollections thank ypu, I need all the luck I can get to be honest. I'm looking at possibly getting a 70 super bee too, but mine will be white and look meaner than hell should I go that route instead.
A very nice looking car
I agree!!!!
The GTX was an upscale Road Runner. This car has a 4 speed. Why didn't it have a console? I've never seen a GTX without one.
Love how the fire department showed respect
Cuda's and roadrunner's and charger's and challanger's get all the attention the GTX is the O.G. my mind
Awesome I had a 68 GTX 440.
That is so cool!!!
BEAUTIFUL MOPAR!!!!!!
We are heading back soon for a follow up!!!
I had a red with black trim 70 with 440+6, 4 speed...was unique because it was ordered with a bench seat
Red…. Love the color!
@@CarsShopsAndCollections lol only thing was it was orange....Plymouth called hemi orange...torr red
The Biggest Mistake of my life , selling my 70, 4sp, 440 air grabber ,GTX ! Had long enough to put 12 engines in it. 10 years or longer. Loved it ! Breaks my Heart ! Beautiful car !
Uhhh Grand Touring Exterminator! but since I grew up in this car's era and my neighbor had a blue 440 it needs either Crager or Keystone hubcaps which were common for the time.
The X in GTX is meant to mean exterminator as in “GTO Exterminator”
Looks like my brother Mr. Craig
PLYMOUTH HEMISPHERICAL head Legend,!! 426 500+torgue hrspwr 500+ Plymouth 🐔🔥⚡
Nice car dad has the tic toc tac g t x has 440 or 440 sis barrel or 426 hemi only
The business man's hot rod.
Yes!!!!!
You even use your hand when you talk while driving lol killer ride ,,dont care for those newer looking wheels.
Watching this video brought back memories. The year, 1973. The problem, ARAB OIL EMBARGO. End result, I failed to buy the GTX. An independent owner had the vehicle for sale. Black, on Black, On Black. It also had Gold reflective stripes. Bench seat, Pistol Grip, 440, Magnum 500 wheels. Test drove it 3 times. Price of gasoline was the stumbling block. Oh well, if we all had crystal balls life would be easy, boring but easy. The car and owner were domiciled in Dunmore, PA.
I grew up in PA.... Your comment brought back memories for me! I remember going with my dad and him test driving cars 3-4 times... only to not buy them! I always had faith that maybe test drive three would seal the deal... lol. We passed on a few good ones as well!
Extreme
Owner mentioned Holley Sniper installation. He might want to research that, because several youtubers have tried unsuccessfully to make them work.
I'll give him the heads up! Thanks for watching!!
Dude this was and is a great video man how many people get to drive in a 70 GTX 440 4;$p
Thank you for watching.... The test drives are my favorite parts!
The 69 Road Runner is the One.
Has the same look but fender won’t change out ? Look the same but a couple of inches difference ?
nice video...but can any-1 pleeese tell me WHAT...YUP_GTX STANDS_4???
Stunning car. The thing i didn" like about it,
Its not mine ha ha😂
Ha ha ha!
gtx stands for grand touring press I have one just like it 440 -6 black and gold number matching
Grand Touring Xperimental.....
Beautiful car. What's UP with that hair? :)
If it's an original 426 Hemi, why not have the normal oem induction? Looks much more impressive with the stock induction and air cleaner assembly. More valuable, too, if it were an original Hemicar.
I didn’t see the a/c compressor
In the day there was GTO Mustang GT, and a few others, GT Gran Turismo....
GTX..
GT....xtermanator...
GTX --- "GenTlemen's EXpress"...
It is the gentleman's muscle car! But I always thought it was just a letter to sound cool... Pontiac had the GTO so Plymouth went with GTX.
GTX stands for Gentlemans Express
GTO Killer
Six barrel
I had a four speed 1970 gtx b5 blue with a black vinyl top white iñteriir 440 four speed Dana rear axle should not have sold it
The color combo sounds amazing
xpress
I'd YANK the Aluminum radiator, NO EFI, Ditch that stoopid 426 for a real 440. I have a RS27VOA car almoat done. 70 GTX convert.440 6BBL. I'll sell for $200K Unless Barret gets it.
Wrong air cleaner. I own a 1970 GTX that I ordered in fall of 1969. 440 6bbl 4:10 Sure Grip manual steering manual brakes disks up front 4 speed.
WHY BLACK ON BLACK WHEN THE INTERIOR IS WHITE? WAS THAT A CHANGE?
The x means experimental duh 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😎
Why did you spoil all of the glass with that black out crap?
It’s a necessity in Las Vegas!
You ever been to Vegas??
come on man[ grand touring express] you own one and dont know your own car?
Dude.. GTX was Chrysler's ANSWER TO GTO, "GTO KILLER" And "Pro Touring"? SUCKS
Youre welcome
GTX Means nothing at all.
Just sounds cool right?
Just Stop talking
He's either ADHD or just wants to insert himself over the owner's story. Lou Constable of My Car Story does it all the time. Some really interesting parts that the owners were sharing were stepped on by Lou and the owner never got back to complete it. Drives me crazy but I still watch his show because he finds some really cool cars.
TERRIBLE hair. haha
EXSPEARMENTAL THAT'S WHAT THE "X" STANDS FOR.
im 65..never heard that b4...are you SURE????
@@scottbarker9058 yes, I'm sure.
@@Dslats YIKESSS>>>>>!!!!!!
@@scottbarker9058 Grand Touring Extra. Top of the line Plymouth B body in hp and luxury. Most were 440-4 bbl. With air conditioning. Only the 6 barrel 440s and Hemi’s did not come with air.
