~I read a description once about Bob Dylan records which applies to Syd Barrett as well: Listening to his material is like looking at old polaroid photos; it is what was going on at the moment. (Paraphrased, but the gist of it is there.):

@@davegann4178 I wouldn't say Individual and different are the same thing, especially when speaking about Syd Barrett who was quite a bit different from other artists. But if that's what you think then that's just 1 reason. 👍

Thank you for putting this together. I expected it to be awful...and was pleasantly surprised. You've dug out some gems. The solo records sessions...he sounds much more coherent than I imagined, if a bit sedated. I wonder if he was taking Mandrax or Valium around that time. that's what it sounds like to me rather than a heavy stoner. Maybe a bit of both. Hmmm. His story is endlessly fascinating and I still have no idea why. Thanks.
Sure! My pleasure! I had a ton of Syd content saved on a flash drive bc I got so obsessed that I NEEDED to have it available without requiring internet access. Syd was my DRUG back then! (Still is!) Anyway, these clips came from my “stash” lol.
There's a theory that it was the heavy amounts of mandrax he was taking to cope with his heavy LSD usage that fucked him up and mandrax basically turns your brain into swiss cheese combined with the fact that syds family said that he was on the autism spectrum. You get a situation like this
Who , Pretty Thing , Love , Spirit , Jefferson Airplane , F.Zappa , Beach Boys , Byrds , Caravan , Buffalo Springfield , Move , Chamber Brother , Traffic , Mayall & Bluebreacker , Spencer Davis Group , Miles Davis , East of Eden ( mercator project )
As another poster wrote, this is not 1967 as stated. It is mid-1968, which was a particular low point. He was in a better, though still up and down place, in 1969 and 1970, as the solo stuff was recorded. I suspect a very bad place in the next 15 years. Hopefully he had some peace and tranquility in the final 20 years of his life.
Syd Barett was a talented, gifted young man. He founded Pink Floyd at the age of 19. He was kicked out at the age of 22. He made two solo albums and wrote 52 songs. A sad story. He failed as a painter and musician. I never understood why he never went to therapy in the 70s, 80s or 90s. Drugs ruin your life. A burden for Syd and his family. Syd Barett could have become something.
He achieved a lot as musician, and died as millionaire. Doesn't sound like a failure to me. What happened to him had multiple caused and also happens with stuff like ADHD medication. His behavior was irresponsible, but blaming the substances is pretty short sighted. Most users never face that kind of problems.
@@nitinkakkar776 Do you mean to say that it was Syd's fault that he had a mental breakdown? (Assuming drugs even caused his breakdown, which isn't how that works.)
No. I'm saying that if you do as much as he is reported to have done you'll probably need years to find yourself again. And much of what you say and do until that happens will seem strange to people.
Sounds like he's being interviewed by an open window near a very busy road.I don't think the noisy traffic would be helping with his train of thought. You'd think the interviewee would shut out the sound of the traffic.
He's stoned off Mandrax in a lot of these. He wasn't using it all the time during the Madcap recordings, actually he was in high spirits and productive during that time. But it seems he became more hooked on it while recording this album. Syd wasn't an acid casualty, he was a Mandrax casualty, and that's the reality.
