Finishing the Craft Room

  • I have been working on a lengthy list of small projects to finish up the craft room. We brought in the desks that I had made earlier. We also brought in a free-standing coat closet that I had made for our old house. I also made some bookshelves that are hung from above on the French cleats and the supporting structure for the shelf works as bookends on the shelves. I attached a French cleat to an old blackboard that we have and hung that in the room. I made some very narrow shelves out of the red alder that I cut down with my friend Gabe a few years ago. These shelves will be good for holding framed artwork. We brought Calvin's train table into the craft room to use as a work table as Calvin is not as into trains as he used to be. I put up an extension cord reel on the ceiling so we can have an extension cord wherever we need it in the craft room and beyond. The last big project was some storage shelves along the back wall of the craft room. I made these free-standing as the back wall is concrete and I did not attach any French cleats in that location. The craft room is essentially done at this point although there are always more small projects to be done.
Craft Room part 1: • Making a Craft Room
Craft Room part 2: • French Cleat Desk
    red alder: • Chainsaw milling
Model Train Table: • Building a Model Train...

I love the idea of shelves that don't have a floor to them, just some "joists". This would prevent anything small and unorganized from being placed on them and everything would have to go in a bin. I'm using this for sure!

Just a quick tip for filling gaps/cracks in concrete before painting floors.... Use bondo or similar. I've done this is a couple of warehouses and it's stood up well, including running forklifts over the cracks. This trick was taught to me by a guy who owned a company that manufactures epoxy flooring paints.....

Meanwhile Frank, creates a whole craft room, moves furniture around, redesigns the shelf, makes an awesome video with incredible animations and throws a couple of CNC parts while he’s at it. Voiceover the video with perfect explanations and uploads it for us to enjoy. Thank you Frank you are awesome!

A cat run sounds fun; make sure there are strategic carpet/upholstered catbeds at key points of both observation, or other advantagous spots, perhaps one near a computer tower with WARMS, or...at a place where they can be scritched conveniently. 4 or 5 spots should do. or perhaps make those nest spots be modular, and you can move them at will, to offer some flexibility and "reprogram" the runs to keep it interesting for the kitties.

Without a compression value of side pressure on those shelves you would not have much friction hold.. The screws however have a very high Shear and tension strength. Shelves should hold nicely.
