Hallo Aus Siebenbürgen ! Wunderbar, ganz einfach ! Bravos !!!
I am now 76 years old and I still cry every time I hear Beethoven,s 9th...to me it is combination of my favourite writer and my favorite composer. New Years eave is my special sad time,as we always listen to the 9th!
Cried again !
Super gesungen, super Konzert. Klong, klong, klong, Monsieur Beethoven, chapeau. Brüder/Schwestern lasst uns feiern: Europa!!!!
I have heard at least 20 versions of this, but this one is the most magnificent. I have never heard anyone interpret the tenor role the way Jonas Kaufmann does, and it's a revelation. I felt as though I have never really heard the tenor solo before! Wonderful!
its the best

Having heard this magnificent piece well over a hundred of times, at 76 years, this performance brings tears of joy to me. My god, why can humanity not listen?
Richard Hallberg to busy killing each other over tribal god images.
I just had the same though in my mind: WHY can humans not listen?

2 Timoteo 3:1-5
what are we human beings thinking, we don't care about life, love of our fellow man. We seem only to want to wow and then stomp on each other. Divide and conquer, are we just wild animals? Things and money , we seem to worship power and money! There have always been those who created beauty and peace and there were also those who worship a false God that wanted attention through nothing but violence . How did it get so out of control? I am 80 years old and hope to see my great great grandchildren pick apples from my tree,,,G0D help the leaders of the world seek peace and cooperation so that we will continue to live and love one another, thank you,
Ich liebe so sehr die deutsche Sprache!!

The most beautifull Music in the world!
The Ultimate! Great performance! It breaks my heart to think that Beethoven never heard it.
I think he heard it in his mind ...
In the world you think that German is a hard and hoarse language, almost frightening.
Instead this song suggests it is a very beautiful, expressive and amazing language.
Italy and Germany have done so much for opera.
Love from Italy to our German Brothers.
Ciao:)
Viva l'Europa. Viva l'Europe.
After you have enjoyed 5 or 8 beers German is a very amazing language! ;-)
Es lebe Europa. Viva l'Europa.
German is *not* at all a hard or hoarse language. It is incredibly melodic, amazingly flexible, and altogether gorgeous. I'm French and I'm fluent in 5 languages. By far, by very very far, German is to me the most beautiful of them all. And besides, Germans are usually quite soft spoken (unlike drunk, but who cares).
Germans soft spoken - depends on the region where you are in Germany. By the way bavarian is most popular dialect in Germany and is soft spoken. When you go up North it is more hard spoken.
I lived mostly in Freiburg and in Regensburg.
@ Rachegotter
Hope you could enjoy the times you lived in Regensburg and Freiburg.
HAPPY 250th BIRTHDAY LUDWIG VAN> DEC> 15 2020.
Pape is fantastic here a great Bass
One of the best basses I've ever heard in Beethoven’s Ninth. Pape.
That may be due to the fact that the first voice is bariton, not bass (even though René Pape is indeed naturally a bass).
Of all the rich civilizational advances Europe has given the world, nothing, in my opinion, is greater than the creation of the symphony orchestra, and music of geniuses such as Beethoven!!!
11:46 my favorite and beautiful part it sounds so beautiful that makes me sad crying❤❤😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🥺🥺
The face at 9.24 says it all. Germany has not always had a history to be proud of, but is not to be ignored for the beauty it has produced.
I cry every time..it reminds me of New Year’s Eve in Berlin when all church bells rang at midnight...and Freude schöner götterfunken was sung right on Midnight.. I used to try and stay awake as a child to just hear this part of beethovens 9th
This is truly what it means to be a German in the world today.

Dieses Solistenquartett ist hervorragend. Danke

World class singing!
Never done better. Pape is a genius.
The best bass ever in the 9th congratulations to all for the most stunning performance I've ever heard
Wunderbare Solisten, allen voran Rene Pape.
This is absolute Glory
An amazing performance with the creme de la creme of singers!!
With strong German roots, I feel such a connection to this music, to these people, to the (better parts, at least) of this history. Beethoven was a genius, and his glorious music will resound within our hearts for eons. (And yes, Pape was brilliant here! Kaufmann, too. And I always love Meier.)
Q
Indigo Bone you either feel a connection to all or none at all, wars shaped europe more than anything else
Yes, but I was referring more to the Nazis and the horrors of WWII. This was much later than Beethoven, thus, I do not need to feel connected to such atrocities. And, I would rather not. I know it's inescapable, but concerning Beethoven, it is removed, at least somewhat.
that's what i meant too, choosing only the good sites of your roots is bs, how can you say you feel a connection to germans when you want nothing to do with the third reich? and germany didn't exist yet when beethoven was alive, so what to feel connected about?
Wow, thank you for the history lesson, of which I am well aware. But thanks. As for the Third Reich, that was, technically, the Nazis, and not ALL Germans. Splitting hairs, I realize, but it's a hair I'm more than willing to split. It's there. It's a part of the history. But I don't have to like it, just as I don't have to like the hellish roller coaster on which we are about to embark in America come January. I don't like it.
Although I love many other composers, singers, and conductors, this must be the absolute pinnacle of Western music.
Wow. Die Interpretation von Kaufmann. Unglaublich.
After the past year I believe I have never needed to hear this more than I have today. Happy 250th birthday (or thereabout) Herr Beethoven!
Wow everybody is good in this version. Pape is fantastic. Schwanewilms is thrilling. Everyone else is superb. What a joy to hear!
What a stunning performance !!!
Thank you very much. The song I'll feel like hearing in December.
I'm Japanese, but this song likes very much.

Well it’s Beethoven and so naturally it’s GLORIOUS
I have never heard the bass part sung better than here by Pape. Stunning and a revelation in this war horse.
+Michael Doyle René Pape is a German opera singer, who had his debut with the Berlin State Opera (Unter den Linden) in 1988, and with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1995. Because he and the other soloists are German, their pronunciation of the lyrics is perfect, and it sounds as Beethoven intended. Two of these opera soloists---Pape and Meier---also appeared (again with Daniel Barenboim) in the PROMS 2012 performance of the ninth symphony in London---part of Barenboim's Beethoven cycle. In that performance, Jonas Kaufmann and Anne Schwanewilms are replaced by Michael König and Anna Samuil, respectively. If you loved Pape's performance here, I think you will also love Michael König's performance there. (The four soloists were dressed in red, gold and black, putting the colors of the German flag smack-dab in the center of Royal Albert Hall. Still, some people probably didn't catch on.)
It isn't perfect diction, which isn't surprising. It's pretty commonplace for singers to be lax in their native tongue's diction. There are a lot of times that vowels which should be long are short in this performance and vice versa. The first instance of it is when Pape sings the word "Stimmen" with the i vowel pronounced like English "ee" when it should be like the I in the English word "sit."
+Thomas Eastham I should qualify this with even highly accomplished professionals make dumb mistakes sometimes.
Yes. Fantastic diction and "meaning"
it's very hard to sing i as in sit, since the longer eee is more natural -- and not only for GERMAN singers!
Most beautiful music by a near deaf composer
This is the best piece of music the world has ever created.
Wow, Mr. Pape, gives me goosebumps.
violinlife Yes he did, but Jonas Kaufmann too!
Wunderbar.....nur dass.
Hello from England - Beethoven spoke with the voice of God!
***** Yes, you are right.
+Der Joker Yes, and nobody would have cared about the poem if Beethoven hadn't set them to the voice of God.
German you're right :D
No, Schiller
HighKingTurgon
The poem of Schiller was popular, before Bethoven set it to music.
Wow, Rene Pape's diction is incredible.
Großartig...Solisten, beethoven...Orchester...Dirigent
Best part of musical history
This was emotional

(from Argentina)
Ah, the genius of Beethoven. This is one great rendition. Barenboim is magnificent as are the orchestra and singers. Could America ever draw such a crowd for something like this? Not bloody likely.
Central Park? Sure.
We could draw the crowds, not sure if the Americans, or anyone else could evoke the same feelings of Beethoven’s music or Schiller’s poems.
this open-air concert was televised (I was lucky enough to catch it on PBS). GREAT occasion: the 60th birthday of post-war Germany, and also a celebration of the "re-union" of the formerly divided Germanies. As I recall, the orchestra was composed of players from all over Germany.
Beethoven himself would have loved to hear this. He never heard his ninth symphony.
Morino Kogu Schiller was my favourite author when I was a teenager...and I have always loved Beethoven’s 9th.
