- “Ue o Muite Arukou” (by Kyuu Sakamoto) was the original name of the song. It was not only written as a protest song in response to the construction of the US military base on Okinawa, but other societal and economic changes that led the author to believe that his country was changing to the point where it had become unrecognizable. In the lyric the singer talks about “looking up at the sky as it rains so it can hide my tears...” The weekly mass shootings and almost daily killing of a black citizen by police have made this country unrecognizable. Nothing changes if nothing changes. For Quarantunes #33, here is ‘Sukiyaki’… - RM

Raul Malo - the greatest singer to ever walk this planet
It doesn't matter what language he sings in still amazing every time
Japanisch
Are you and I the only one's that detect that, he's insanely mind boggling fabulous!!!!
Mr MALO:
I remember when this song came out and the radio air waves could not get enough of it. It is about the military occupation of Japan after WWII and how, in the early 1960s, JAPAN still did not control their government because of the "terms of surrender." Only recently, Japan was finally allowed to increase their military capabilities.
The man who wrote it was a young student protester who wanted his freedom, as most youth always do. The "rain" to hide his tears is both symbolism as it is truth. Rain after the two atomic bombs turned "rain" itself into a different meaning. The irony, to me, about this song was that it came out in a period of time when the USSR and USA were Saber rattling with nuke bomb threats. The Bay of Pigs' invasion surrounded this era when this song went global (i.e.viral) for months. It "took" people, although many never knew the meaning of the Japanese words, it "took" them. It "took" them just like the "high lonesome" sound of country music or the "deep ache" that the blues fills up. It "took" the world, and the world surrendered its "heart" to Japan. At the time of this songs release, It hadn't even been 20 years since the two "Atomic Bomb" drops on Japan, and yet, the death and its fallout were still cursing Japan. And now, we are coming up on 80 years in 2023. Soon, it will be 80 years? Wow.
You, sir, do such a beautiful haunting rendition of this song with that beautiful voice of yours. I only got turned onto ya'lls music in the last year and a half, and ya'lls music, to me, is both haunting and beautiful and joyfully appreciated. Ya'll have filled some deep holes inside me, like music does, when used to heal. Keep doing what ya'll do. Thank you for sharing that "spice" that cuban culture puts into music because it's beautiful and joyful. People have no idea how big country music became in Japan starting in the 1950s. Country music has even been embraced in eastern Africa. But to me, music is music, it's all beautiful when it's REAL MUSIC. Good luck to Ya'll ❤ thanks for sharing your many gifts with us "out here" who catch yer vibes. 😊
I'm not here for political affiliations. I'm here for the haunting beauty in this mans voice. Even more impressive is for a native speaker of spanish that he can sing in japanese is simply mind blowing
I think he's American, so his first language is English.
They might be tejanos, or Tex-Mex, from the States.
@@lucio.martinez ~ Raul is first generation Cuban-American, born in Miami, FL.
Raul can sing any thing❤😮❤🎉
So beautiful. Raul is always making music that crosses all language barriers.
WOW! In nearly 70 years on this earth I don't think I've heard a more beautiful song! I hope he adds it to the live show. Going to see the Mavs again next April.

Raul has a phenomenal voice I could listen to him sing the phone book. 💖
Beautiful..always.
Unbelievably awesome 👏
SO Impressive!!! Awesome Vocals, as Always. Now RM masters another language! WOW!!
Thank you, Raul, not only for your performance. Your thought provoking explanation of the song's origin and how it relates to today's deeply disturbing events was inspirational. There's much work to be done to correct the serious inequities in our cultures and, as you so succinctly stated, "nothing changes if nothing changes."
WOW!!! This song is so appropriate for our times! And Raul....SO awesome!!!!
Thank you Raul for this very great Song with your awesome Voice :-)))
Hi Mavericks,
You have brought an old time favourite back to the forefront.
Amazing performance Raul.
Keep uploading, we are going through a very turbulent time with the resurgence of Covid. 💞👌😄
What can you say just WOW What a beautiful rendition.loved every minute.
With the Maestro we make the joke about singing the phone book ! And then this beautiful haunting vocal ! We are blessed. Gracias Maestro!
wow! that voice is beyond the heavens...
Wonderful Raul. Beautiful voice, face, personality.
Few artists will sing without yge accompaniment of instruments. Some will not even allow being heard without digital tuning. Raul shows he can show his voice in the raw form to beso beautiful. For decades I still think he has one of the best voices and it shows it here.
I'd like Raul to cover Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" as one of her s quarantunes. I think he'd do an excellent job on it. Raul sings every song with perfection!
Raul's voice is beautiful and haunting and I found the story behind the song informative. i will share a story. Last summer I was pulled over for speeding by a motorcycle policeman. I live in Las Vegas and sweat was pouring off this policeman so I didnt even try to talk my way out of the ticket which I am pretty good at because I am a 69 yr old short, round (white) grandma lady and men are usually very gracious to me . I think I remind most men of their Mom or Grandma. My purse with my ID was on the passenger floor and I started to reach for it then stopped myself. I told the officer I needed to reach down for my ID and asked him if he was going to shoot me. He laughed and said I didnt look like the type. It is sad that we get judged by how we look but we all automatically do it. It is scary for all of us including the police. I agree we need to do our best to change how we perceive people but I dont know how to do it. That doesnt mean we shouldnt try.
For the love of God, this man has no boundaries. The Universe is his stage, his audience, his world.

I have no way of knowing if these lyrics are true to the connotations of the original, but they do seem to be an approximately correct translation.
[English translation:]
I look up while I walk
So the tears won't fall
Remembering those spring days
But tonight I'm all alone
I look up while I walk
Counting the stars with teary eyes
Remembering those summer days
But tonight I'm all alone
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up while I walk
So the tears won't fall
I cry while I walk
For I am alone tonight
Remembering those autumn days
But tonight I'm all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness hides in the shadow of the moon
I look up while I walk
So the tears won't fall
My heart is filled with sorrow
For tonight I am alone
For tonight I am alone
He's right on!
Thank you for writing the lyrics.
Thank you for the translation.
👍👍
A suitable tribute to the king of Tyre, the fallen prince of this world, at the present passing away of his vanishing kingdom.
Conocí esta canción por Selena.
By the way, that ticket was $250. for 9 miles over the speed limit.
まさかスキヤキを歌うとは思ってもいなかった!!Next time you sing, I suggest you sing "HITORIBOTCHINO" "YORU". The "NO" should be attached to the "HITORIBOTCHI." "HITORIBOTCHINO" and take breath and "YORU".
I dont think there's any song you cant do
Japonês? Diferente mas interessante.
The phone book has nothing over Raul. I would think in the midst of the attack on freedom all over the world that Raul might come out on the side of freedom. Like maybe a rendition of "That Ragged Old Flag" by Johnny Cash. But he's preoccupied with communism. Or maybe The HighwayMen Born and bred In Black And White. Virtue signal much?
Nice vocals but settle down, Raul.
This is beautifully sung by Malo, one of the best and most underrated voices in pop music BUT this band should not be getting into leftist liberal policies, especially Malo whom is Cuban or of Cuban ancestry and should be glad that he is in this country - and the police do not kill black men on purpose every day in this country. Had George Floyd complied he would have been alive today but he was under the influence of very dangerous Fentanyl which destroys your system much like PCP has done to people. He died of a heart attack caused by the overdose of fentanyl and not by an officer putting a knee on him. He was being controlled much like those on PCP.
Hilarious
