Blacksmithing - Forging a Leaf from Wrought Iron

  • I wanted to do a quick piece to test the wrought iron chain I forged out. What better way than to make one of the most classic blacksmithing projects, a leaf! It turned out pretty nice I think but it can be a tricky material to work with, as it constantly wants to crack and split apart.
    Thanks for watching!

    This was just a quick little video that I filmed after doing the wrought iron. There will be another one in the middle of the week. Knifemaking!

    I use wrought iron from pins and spike found on farm fields. My problem, is even when I bring temperature to forge ( non magnetic), as soon trying to establish a point....the fiber delaminate in hundred of needle., even If I use borax. So making nails with found wrought iron...is not working. I found that I can make small project by flattening and rolling the tip, but hard to to, when pointing. I try making leaf, but found they have to be pretty thick, not to see the delamination. I am o.k with the long crack created when twisting, or bending, it add to character of reusing this material....but point are hard to do. Wondering how they achieved pointing nails back then...might be from higher carbon wrought iron. Have a good day, from Canada

      Magnet won't get you anywhere good, it's not an indicator for forging temperatures.
      Wrought iron needs to be bright yellow almost white when forging it. It doesn't mind high temperatures so don't be afraid to push it. If you want to have stick together better your best bet is to cut and fold to refine it and make the fibers smaller. More homogeneous basically.

    Ladies and gentleman that should be the first thing you make when you start blacksmithing

    Gotta keep wrought iron at welding heat for little stuff like that or it's prone to splitting.

      Haha mine could still be a ton better. I haven't made that many leafs in my blacksmithing career.

  • @aimansyahmidzulkhairy909

    This is nice but what's the difference between normal iron and wrought iron?

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  Před 3 lety

      Wrought iron refers to the way it was produced. Just like there is cast iron or pig iron etc. Here is a link to a page explaining how it was made www.sciencedirect.com/topics/materials-science/wrought-iron

    A while back you made a beautiful rose. Was that made of a different material?

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  Před 3 lety +1

      Don't think so but definitely possible to make the guard of the knife a leaf.

  • @loxynova

    From what I see wrought iron is too brittle to make a small art project, I wonder if your next video on knife making with it will at least be hardenable or withstand the normal use of a knife...

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  Před 3 lety +1

      It's not that it's brittle. Wrought iron has a very odd structure with a lots of strands in it, almost like wood. That's why it breaks apart like it does. It doesn't have any carbon in it really so it won't harden whatsoever, making it useless for knives. However you can forge a piece of high carbon steel to it and make san mai which I will be doing in the future.
