    There's a fair bit of misinformation going on in the comments, so here's the verbatim quote from The Guardian: ""If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure," James Hetfield, co-founder of Metallica, has said. As for his music being torture, he laughed: "We've been punishing our parents, our wives, our loved ones with this music for ever. Why should the Iraqis be any different?""
    The song might offer an unfavourable interpretation of James Hetfield, but is one that is in keeping with what he said.

  • @VoyageOne1
    @VoyageOne1 Před 10 lety +37

    Lol at all the crying fanboys. The song was written in response to Hetfield’s approval of Metallica’s music being used by the U.S army to torture Iraqi prisoners. He even went as far to say there was nothing wrong with that and pretended like he never knew anything about it which is the whole point of this song. Just because it isn’t wrong, doesn’t always mean it’s ethical or right

    FYI: James didn’t support their songs being used for torture. Metallica is very apolitical, and James essentially said “it is what it is, there’s nothing we can do about it, and we aren’t going to get into it”. The “record” this guy talks about is a fiction… James never said that. Maybe you disagree with that and think he should have taken a strong opinion against it. Fair enough. But at least be honest about what he actually said…
    Also Metallica is one of the greatest and most accomplished bands of all time. Their music is insanely good. Chumbawamba on the other hand….
    Go listen to Tubthumping and then go listen to Fade to Black and you tell me who the better musicians are lmao

      Bad comparison: Anarchy (Chumbawamba's 1994 dance-punk record) stands up extremely well with anything Metallica released after the Black Album, and is a very good record in its own right. Also, Chumbawamba were leftists anarchists, and were probably going to diss a band with a song literally called "Don't Tread On Me" anyway. Or you're just a troll who I'm wasting my time interacting with. Either way, WOW.

    • @randomutubr222
      @randomutubr222 Před 2 lety +4

      @@paisleepunk lol music is obviously subjective, so we’ll never be able to agree on that point anyway.
      But regardless of that, it’s still funny that you specifically say “stands up well with anything after the Black Album”. Most Metallica fans, including myself, consider their music to be going downhill after the Black Album. So it’s hilarious to me that you compare Chumbawamba to the “worst” part of Metallica’s career.
      If you were stranded on a desert island and could choose between Anarchy and Ride the Lightning, then hey, it’s a personal choice. I certainly know which one I’d pick though (and I’m also not saying Chumbawamba makes bad music. But it doesn’t hold a candle to Metallica, I’m my opinion..) lmao
      And yeah. I know they are leftists. That isn’t what I said. What I said is they, in bad faith, took what James actually said out of context and unjustly vilified him. If you want to argue I’m wrong on that, then please go ahead and do so. But otherwise you are the one not acting in good faith and “trolling”, not me…

      If you could only hear 1 record for the rest of your life, I agree I may pick Ride the lightning, superb album, but if I had to choose a Discography, Chumbawamba would be my shoice as I rather explore more than 1 genre.
      Using their only hit as an argument against them, when they have more albums with more musical diversity than Metallica, a better comparision would be Enter Sandman vs Tub-thumping (you may still pick Metallica, but you have to admit both are in the same level of sell-outness, pretty much all fans can agree).

      What he said...
      "If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure," James Hetfield, co-founder of Metallica, has said. As for his music being torture, he laughed: "We've been punishing our parents, our wives, our loved ones with this music for ever. Why should the Iraqis be any different?"
      Put this in the context of the fact that none of the Iraqis had anthing to do wih 9/11 and were being tortured for defending their country against a foreign invader. Imagine how you would react if a powerful nation decided they didn't like our leader (and we DO have WMDs in the US) and sent in their military to take him out and disband OUR military.
      Wouldn';t you take up arms to defend our country against the invaders? By the definituion employed against the Iraqi resistance by he US, that would make you a terorist.
      And so when Jan=mes Hetfield talks "Freedon" he's talking out of his ass (and many of the "terrorists" we tortured were arrested based on he testimony of one other individual, ao the=re are actual caes of completely innocent people being grabbedbty US forces ob the basis idf the testimony of a disgrunted neighbor or competetior in business).
      Iraq was a shitshow and Hetfield should be ashamed of the fact rhat his "Art" was used to commit atrocities.

    I think this band had one hit after criticising the government at a 90's Brit award show. Well done, but now they seem to think they are the Sex Pistols and are still trying to use criticism to further their career. Good luck to them, but the Sex Pistols had good songs! Don't turn your criticism to Metallica. You've simply got it wrong.

    I'm a blues fan. I don't know too much about Metallica but I know what I have herd is good music. These 'chumpster' guys are pathetic. They have no career and insult other people to try and gain popularity. Why do some has-been so called 'musicians' think that their opinions are more valid than other people.
    Good luck. I'm waiting to hear your no1 album. While I wait I'll listen to some good music like the Stones, Beatles or Metallica!
    Shit song
