Rainy Messer Sparring at the Beach ⛱️

A short sparring session with a member of Order of the Talon, a HEMA club who is just across the water from us. I did alright in this one but am still nursing a shoulder injury. Our club had a lot of fun trading knowledge and sparring with the great men and women of this club! We hope to meet with with others in our area very soon as a united HEMA community is a happy one.

The larger individual has better distance management, but his footwork leaves him at a disadvantage with an opponent that can capitalize on it. While he executes his lateral movement he either brings his lead foot across his center line destabilizing his posture, or he brings his lead foot to close to his rear foot closing his base and making it difficult to respond to a pressing attacker that attempts more than a single strike in succession. The individual that starts on the left throws a lot of strikes that are clearly out of range but doesn’t use it to bait a response, and seems to not respond to his opponents changing guards and movement with any urgency. Leaving himself open on several occasions with little time to assume an appropriate guard for the oncoming attack.

This is not me saying that either individual is “bad” at swordplay. Both seem to have a good understanding of the motions of combat, but in my opinion it’s the mechanics of combat that need refinement, and that you only really get from live sparring. In other words, you both look good and are doing exactly the thing that will bring you to the next level in fencing. I just wanted to give my observations as a fellow historical fencer. Keep up the good work fellas, I enjoyed the show.
