- Stem cells are unspecialized cells that undergo differentiation to form specialized cells. Potency describes the ability of stem cells to differentiate into specialized cells. Self-renewal describes the fact that stem cells can divide many times while remaining unspecialized. Stem cells can be categorized as totipotent, pluripotent, or multipotent based on how many different cell types they can give rise to.
