- In this one, we attempt to escape the heat by heading way west and up into the mountains to search for agates! This trip was intended to be more of a day trip/heat retreat, but you know I can't help myself when I see a river boasting exposed gravel! For the little amount of time that we stopped, we found some beautiful material! After spending so many countless hours hunting the Yellowstone River, it is always so strange to see Pre-River worn agates on these gravel beds, some of which are still encased in basalt! Unfortunately the rain cut our recon short, but we did get the very rare pleasure of encountering a wild Grizzly Bear! After getting back to the shop, I selected a few specimens to cut and polish, but I also decided why not try faceting one! I hope you all enjoy this one, and I will have another one out very soon!

Hey everyone!😄 Tooootally forgot to mention it in the video so i wanted to put it here in the comments to clarify😂 we were safely in the car with the windows barely cracked to record the bear, no freaking way i would be recording if there wasnt a metal barrier and 50 yards minimum between us!🤣 hope you all enjoy this one!😄
Dang Theo! That wasn’t just a bear… that looked like a GRIZZLY!
Phew! I was worried at how calm y'all were!
At first I thought you were out in the open, but then I heard the wheels of the car move.
That would be scary.
I did almost walk into a seal on a New zealand beach. My head was down when it roared at me
You should carve a bear head with one you found that day!!! Be super awesome!
Thanks Theo. Love the rockhounding & cutting/polishing videos. I know I should not have a favourite, but I do. Dante is such a beautiful wee dog. Give her clap from me.
Dante is just the cutest!
🥰
Thanks for taking us along! It was great to see this variation on the material. Great finds and finished projects! Excited to see that amygdaloidal basalt!
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: sometimes the "hunting" is the reward as much as the "finding". Great adventure. 👍
Great hunt. I am so glad you and the pups were in the car when you saw the bear. Whew! Good rocks. Thanks.

Looked like So much fun!!! Love that you leave many of them in the natural state on parts...the best of both sides..perfect.
Absolutely stunning area! And some good rocks too...
I love your faceted ones 😍 It definitely was worth it!
Your videos are amazing. It’s so fun watching someone who loves rocks as much as I do 😊 And that bear! 😳😳😳
Fantastic capture!! that's very beautiful these Agates
Cool, have a wonderful day!
Can't wait for the rings, made from agates!
Yay!! Amazing finds!! Gorgeous!!. And that bear, wow, crazy cool!!. Love love love the faceted stone for sure. Enjoy your weekend!
Beautiful agates and that petrified wood was awesome!! 😁❤️👍
Alexis, you rock!. The blue and pink agathes are amazing. Nice polishing, but I love the facetted one.
The time I was up there, I didn't get to see much of Montana, but did get to see more of Wyoming. Beautiful country!! ❤️❤️
My favorite find the pet wood with BLUE in it, and the faceted agate. Beautiful nature pics of grizzly.
They are all amazing especially the faceted one stunning Glad to see you all out and about again. Love the videos you guys have access to amazing agates and petrified wood compared to
Victoria in Australia Well done and look forward to more videos Take care 🇦🇺
Was I seeing things or was there a little Iris-play going on in that faceted stone??
I love the big agate you polished at 13:55! Don't cut it!!! It looks so nice😁
Can't wait to see another video from western Montana. It's awesome now with so many new gravel bars everywhere!
best find - grizzly bear
Gidday from Australia!! 🐨🦋🦎🦘🙋🏼♀️ I totally enjoyed journey from the creek to the polisher 💓👌🏽 Great agate - hope to see more 🫶🏼
That was an amazing hunt! The piece of petrified wood is so awesome and the amygdalidal basalt came in a very close second. The polished agates are so beautiful I can't pick a favorite, the blue one is awesome and the banding and crystals also are awesome and then you faceted that piece and it turned out awesome too. Keep up the great videos and God bless you and your family.
Such beautiful finds. The pink one is just gorgeous. That's my favorite one I think. Cant get over that piece of pet wood. Wow. So beautiful, and that blue in it.
I haven't seen the video yet. But I just wanted to tell you I always look forward to seeing your videos. Happy Hunting
Can't wait to see what that galaxy stone (so much easier to spell) looks like inside! Also love the one tha Alexis found. If a bear detects food in the car, you wouldn't even be safe there, haha!
Very nice I think the pinkish one is the best one love those bands
Sooo beautiful . Great finds that day Theo . love them all , Cheers
Awesome, gorgeous agates! Really loved the polished ones especially the one with the pocket. The bear was amazing!
Petrified wood, agates, and....bears. Oh my!
Totally awesome adventure!!
All of the rocks found were outstanding! There is no way to pick a favorite 🤯. You must go back soon to that location 💥💥
How cool that you faceted that agate!!! I would’ve never thought to do that. You changed my whole world! I really want to do that now. ✨✨
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure. Outstandingly Epic!
Stay Crystal 💫
Mari
I get excited and nervous at the same time when searching new locations but love finds different styles of agates. Nice video Theo
the litle faceted banded clear agate was brilliant.
Holy bear! That was a bear! Way to close and you have dogs that are i snack pack for the bear! Wow! And the rocks were nice too! lol That was far different than your normal rock hunts because those agates were way smaller, but every bit as gorgeous. And the polishing? Gorgeous, but faceting one was brilliant! wow that was gorgeous! I like the blue with the moss! It is amazing. And that piece of pet wood is so amazing! its absolutely phenomenal! And of course Alexis for the win! That agate she found was phenomenal. Yay! Glad you all made it out safely! awesome video!
Holy Cow ~ That was a Huge Bear ! ! You don't see them. True. But that one was amazing. Glad it walked away! ~ You also never show Elk, Deer, or Antelope which ARE common.. But I Love Rocks, so just keep showing them ! ! [They don't bite.]
The bear was just wanting to go fishing, and once again one of those Rock tossing humans messed up a perfectly good day. 😂
We love agates my wife and I live in Oregon and we rockhound everywhere we go Washington we go to Idaho we've been all over Oregon and some of the best agates I've ever found in my entire life I have found within 50 miles of my own home and that is so cool I have a piece of priday agate that weighs 27 lb pretty big piece found it in madris or.... I'm originally from Wyoming and I drove truck all through the Midwest is he younger man and I know Montana very well so I'm kind of excited to get up that way and start looking through your riverbeds I really enjoyed your video God bless you guys and stay safe
We have some agate/basalt out here too, some are pretty cool when cut or tumbled... Also have basalt with opal too...
That was a big young Grizzly bear, they have been coming down from the mountains more and more...
That petwood is knock your socks off awesome!!
Great video as always buddy....
Muy bellos los bosques americanos, muy natural, es una de las cosas que mas me gustan de los Estados 🇺🇸 que Dios bendiga a los americanos
Nice work kid. Love it!!!!
Very nice agates, come up real nice. Glad we don't have bears in Australia stay safe and rock on 🤘 👍
Love it Theo! Thank you!
I got stuck up by Discovery ski resort a couple years ago. Had to run into to Anaconda and buy more chain and another comealong. On my way back up to my truck there were bear track that weren't there on my way down. It fallowed my track all the way back up to my truck. Didn't need it but glad I always carry my pistol with me.
Fantastic video.
Beautiful spot, beautiful river, and omg beautiful finds.
I really loved the petrified wood, that blue was amazing.
That bear was beautiful, but omg I'd freak out if I saw that.
Nothing like that in New Zealand.
Really enjoy watching you videos.
Facet was so cool man should do a really orange agate
Best find for me was the wood, so amazing. Oh, and the griz too. I've had a few mesmerizing photo encounters like that, even closer, and safely in the rig. Where in western Montana, general area if you don't want to be specific?
WOW what a great day. I have relatives in Montana. It is a beautiful state. You know where the treasures are. My favorite was.....all of them. But I could truly wear that faceted stone. Or hold the petrified wood.
Thanks for a great video
Alexa's is the best!
Awesome video Theo! So nice to see you back in your element with the agates. When I saw all the flooding I figured it would be at least three or four months before you were able to hunt for some agates. I guess I was wrong. I can't wait to see what you do with that petrified wood! I think you could definitely take a few slabs off of the bottom and keep the rest of it as a specimen. Just shave off the bottom so that it stands up right. 👍
A bear 🐻 so neat but scary.
Hi Theo 🙂 I live in New Zealand and am relatively new to rockhounding. I discovered your channel through Paleo Chris and Wild Kyle's channels respectively. I love how you explain things so clearly and you have such a deep passion for rocks and fossils. I would love it if you would consider making an episode explaining to us newbies how to correctly identify agate and petrified wood, and how to correctly identify the different features of agate, such as Moss, Waterline, Banding etc. My two sons are really interested in going rockhounding with me, so I want to be sure I am teaching them the correct terminology and identifications. Or even if you could give a few tips here in the comments would be amazing thank you. Keep the wonderful content coming!! 😁🥰🤯🏞🏜🏖🏝🌋🏔🪨💎🔎
Very quick and dirty...
° If it feels waxy, and is semi-translucent, then it's probably Chalcedony.
° If it's Chalcedony, and there are bands, eyes, plumes, or moss, then it's an agate.
° There are two main types of banding, waterline and fortification.
° Waterline bands typically run parallel with each other in a straight line.
° Fortification bands typically form non-linear, parallel (non-crossing) patterns, usually encircling each other... Like defense lines around a fort (hence the name).
° If it's waxy and opaque, then it's likely chert.
° If it's chert and has bands, it's banded chert (not agate).
° If it's colorful chert, it's called Jasper.
° If it's not waxy, and is semi-translucent, then it's likely quartz or quartzite.
° If it's not waxy, and there are multiple colored "chunks," all mixed together (regardless of translucency), then it's likely granite.
° If it's granitic, and it's red and green, then it's probably unakite.
I hope this helps...
@@MrTurtleMontana Thank you so much. Now I can copy this to refer back to when trying to identify my finds 😁
Amazing work as always Theo 👍🏼 I was thinking that one you polished could be an iris agate! Whatever it’s cool as is. 🐻 bear! Great video
Well it's 110 with the heat index here today and I was going to envy your 68 degrees until I saw the bear. So yeah, nevermind. Beautiful agates :)
Amazingly beautiful finds! My girlfriend and I are heading to MT in October to go treasure hunting, from WA, and this definitely has us more excited about our trip! Thanks for sharing!
October? Cold and probably snowing. It gets cold over here around the September 15th
@@aaronknowlton3996 thanks for the info! We're planning on staying in Livingston then venturing along the Yellowstone from there.
Great video!!
More galaxy stone basalt hounding collection & polishing PLEEEEASE. (& Baculites 😌)
Ohhh muy bella ojalá en cuba se encontrarán asi de fácil, y de bellas
Yes you should facet agate more often!
Oh my goodness, a bear! That hunt was fantastically awesome! You both amaze me with the finds you get! I actually like the petrified wood and the faceted agate, which I am hoping to do with my flat lap soon! I do have a question for you, I saw that you used a metal polishing disc, are they better than the other kind? I have one that came with my machine but it is only one grit! Thanks for sharing!
Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you and some days you are the bear hahahaha extreme rockhounding love it!
Muito linda Theo...
Always a great job on everything. Great looking rocks. Have you ever walked the Big Horn River?
That faceted agate is amazing! I swear as you turned it there were rainbow or prismatic colors flashing?
I would have pooped my pants , if I had seen that bear 😂
Would love to see some faceted Lake Superior agate
Wow extremely beautiful!!!!! But please don’t cut the petrified wood piece with blue agate!!!!
Another great video Theo. Really enjoyed it. Got 2 very important question. Where can I get that hat? Very nice hat. Also where can I get one of those spray bottles you use? Thanks for another great vid.
🥳👏
I'm curious if that piece of pet wood really has blue agate in it or if it's the Tyndall Effect. Looks like it's really blue, not pretend blue. You might have discovered an area with a high concentration considering you got both that and that mossy chunk.
Hello. I am new to rockhounding and live in Indiana. I really enjoy watching your videos. We are visiting SD and staying in Rapid City. Can I ask where your favorite place to hunt is in this region? I get to spend tomorrow hounding and was hoping you could recommend a good place. Thanks?
Hey Theo 👋
What part of western Montana were you at? I was born and raised in the Bitterroot Valley, about an hour south of Missoula. I live in West Michigan now. Unfortunately, I wasn't a rock collector until I visited Lake Superior for the first time.
I want the faceted agate. Are you going to sell it in your Etsy store. It's gorgeous.
My daughter and I have been trying to find rocks like that or crystals in Colorado and we’re having a hard time we live in pueblo Colorado
New sub! Liked 🙏🙏🎃🎃
👌👍👍👍👍
How long ago did you record this? Is the river still too high to hunt?
You should do a baseball hat with some agates, sown on them, just a few pieces, just a thought
Do you hunt for rocks near the flooded Yellowstone?
I'm new to rocks/rockhounding so I'm wondering - is the one at 4:18 bottom center an agate? It looks pinkish maybe.
Ok, I think I maybe answered own question - was this the one you'd already picked up?
Hi, do you sell some agates?
Beautiful agates! But I hope you will seriously consider carrying bear spray; no rock is worth you or the dogs being attacked by an angry bear.
