Multi-Level California Gold Mine - Cool Ladder System - Multiple Artifacts

  • Please join us for this exciting abandoned mine exploration of the Nomad Gold Mine. The Nomad was primarily a gold mine and was discovered in 1897. Silver, copper, and lead were secondary metals that were also mined here. In 1933 there were 22 men employed. In 1941, a new mill was erected, but the mine was closed by the war production board in 1942. In 1950, the mine was restarted and was active off and on until at least 1975.
    We entered the mine through a nicely timbered portal to find spacious drifts that weaved through the mine workings. One of the first features we came to was a hoist room above a winze shaft. In the hoist room, there was a utility table and a mount for the hoist. We explored the rest of the first drift level and crossed a sketchy bridge that looped back to the hoist room. We then descended the ladders that went down the winze shaft deep into the mine, where we found some interesting artifacts. In one of the stopes, there were several small rocks hanging from strings, which is something that we have never seen before. There were also several unique artifacts that we checked out on the lower level. We hope you enjoy the video, and thanks for watching.

    Hi Tom and Julie Mr. Long Comment Here 5:58 is that the Killer Green Bud Mine? 9:22 The spools may be a reuse as when I had my Lode Mines the Explosive Det Cord came in 2200' rolls so I'd wrap what I needed for that days blasting on a small spools so as not to have more explosives on hand than needed, I'd also use small wire spools to hold my blasting cap lead wires on. 10:14 Miners Rolling Tray for that Weed, lol.13:14 who ever built that bridge put the left side support beam wedges in wrong, they should be driven in from underneath and not on top so the left side could slip and collapse underload, always keep that in mind when crossing false floors too, an improperly installed floor or bridge can be a disaster waiting to happen. You two cross a lot of stuff that gives this old Lode Miner the Willies, I am always yelling at my pc screen, "Tom Julie Not Without a Rope or Mask up!", I got Rocks in my Box and that mine dust and rodent debris is more hazardous than most Miners and Exporters alike know. 18:45 Might I suggest than when on any ladder especially wooden ones that you alway try to place your feet on the outsides of each rung and not in the middle. 19:33 Rocks on a String is a Miner Plumbob. 22:18 While still slightly Dangerous Fuse Caps are not as powerful as Electric Caps are and unlike Electric Caps over time water weeps in from the fuse and makes it a dud but Electric Caps can stay Explosive for many many years even in water. 23:18 Acetone for cleaning Rock Drills. 24:44 Highgrade Sampling Jig or sometimes called a Floatation Box, kind of like a small Sluice Box.. 27:41 Care YT can give a Strike for showing personal info. Well as usual my comment looks more like a book so I best shut up or it will be one. Take Care you Two, see you on the next one🙅

    Great thing about these mines are that they are dry so no rotten timbers.
    Over here in the UK most copper and lead mines are wet and with false floors and old wet rotten timbers can be lethal to anyone who is inexperienced.
    But as some workings can be several thousand years old from when they first began there is some interesting stuff about.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi Brian. There is always a fair amount of gold mining going on, especially when the price goes up. Many mine claims are kept active by everything from hobby prospectors and owners of small mines to multi national mining companies with huge open mines. Many mines have been surveyed, and mineral vein assessments have been made so they know where the gold reserves are. If the price doubled, things would get wild in a hurry. Thanks for the comment!✌️⛏️

    What a wild view from the mine road... How in the heck do they find the gold veins. Just dig around until they hit it?? They go in every direction. Up down around and all over. Another question: Since rattlesnakes den underground for warmth and some of these mines are warm... Did you ever run into a snake den??

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Hi Max. The view across Owens Valley towards Mount Whitney never gets old. I think the old miners could spot a potential valuable outcropping from a mile away. Once they get on it, they just keep following it. We never see snakes more than a few feet into a mine. We have seen a few places where they are balled up in the rocks, though. Thanks for watching!✌️⛏️

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Tony. The much sheet is a piece of flat steel that is placed on the floor at the working face of a drift. When the shot is fired, the charges are set off in a specific sequence, and the last charges lift the broken rock up and onto the mucksheet to allow easy shoveling and loading into an ore car. Thanks for the comment!✌️⛏️

      Even though this mine was worked into the 1980s, it was first started in the late 1800s. So, it's been around a long time. Glad that you found it interesting, and thanks for watching!✌️⛏️

    How come you didn't say bless you when Julie sneezed?😮 Play that real sure got twisted up I wonder how that happened? Thanks for taking us along with you guys. It's always interesting to watch you guys go down there.😊😊😊

      Hi Eddie. I learned from a minister from England that I met in Mexico this last winter why people say bless you when you sneeze. There are other theories, but this one makes sense to me. During the outbreak of bubonic plague in the 1300s, when millions of people in Europe died from the 'Black Death', one of the early symptoms was sneezing. So, when someone sneezed, they would get a blessing, hoping to protect them from getting worse and dying.
      The miners would pull up and reuse the straight sections of rail and leave the pieces that had been custom bent for a curve behind. Since they didn't care about the curved sections, I guess they just ripped them up with some type of power equipment and set them aside.
      Gad that you enjoyed this one. Thanks for watching!😊

    I know how you can’t resist ladders. You’d have to make several trips to climb all of them. 😂

    They are out and about again 😊 Don't you think it would be a good idea to use a safety rope on ladders because God forbid but if one fails you'd be in real trouble out there..

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 2 dny

      @MrPINKFL0YD We often do use a rope on ladders that are in less than very good condition. The wood in many of these dry desert mines is in such good condition that a rope isn't always necessary. Thanks for watching and for your concern for our safety. Sometime I'll have to find a photo of Julie with her Pink Floyd tee shirt on for you.😁

    Sir you don’t have to describe everything you see on camera 😂 we know what a bottle of water looks like or a barrel or a rope etc… you can describe questionable items only but everyday things , come on …..😂
    Thank you for your efforts i personally love the show❤️

    That cardboard tube said Nomad Mining and Milling. I couldn’t find any info on it except that they may have a Super Fund site.

      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Ed. Since that tube had a relatively recent date on it, maybe the mining company is responsible for some sort of reclamation on this or another site. In the old days, mine site reclamation was not practiced. 😬

    Curious on this deep explore, what was the air quality?

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Doug. Almost all mines have some airflow moving through them. Even as you get deep underground, this is still usually true. We are usually in dry desert mines where the air quality is generally very good. We both carry air quality monitoring devices, and the number of times they have detected low oxygen is very few. The number of times we have detected other dangerous gasses is almost zero. If you are in a wet mine, that could be a very different scenario. Thanks for bringing up this important subject.✌️⛏️

      That’s good! I figured from seeing some of the damp mine adventures, air is typically sketchy in them. Thanks for all you do to relive the early days of hard rock mining. Really enjoy them! 👍👍

    Good morning Tom and Julie. I've watched quite a few of your videos. Can I ask what types of safety equipment do you carry and have you had close calls inside the mines.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi Daniel. Thanks for watching several of our videos. We carry a lot of gear both inside and outside of the mines. We always each carry enough extra food, water, and clothing to easily survive an extra day and night over what we were planning. For inside the mines, we have helmets, three flashlights each with extra batteries, a four gas detector, O2 meter, first aid kit, knife, folding shovel, guns, multi tool, small tarps, knee pads, whistle, pen and paper, maps, GPS, compass, epi pen, gloves, 30' length of good rated utility cord, watch, lighter, candle, stiff hair comb for removing cactus spines, two way radios, bright colored cloth to flag the portal we've entered. If we are on rope, then there is a whole added bunch of kit for climbing hardware and packs for ropes and slings. Trekking poles are also a very valuable multi-purpose tool that we always have. Of course, there is camera equipment and lighting for the videos.
      We haven't had any major problems inside the mines. There are the usual falls that we've both had. Loose rocks falling down vertical shafts are probably one of the most dangerous scenarios that we face. Probably the best safety measure is a lot of common sense. There is not a lot of room for error when you are in a mine.
      Thanks for bringing up this important subject.👍😊

      Hi Joe. I have no idea who leaves their pants behind. I'm sure that
      it was a mining and milling operator, just as the name implies. I don't know why they would be a claimant for 65 closed claims. Thanks for the comment!✌️⛏️

    "There's a little bit of weed if you want it." -- LOL only in California. I would think that the very last thing a miner would want in an underground mine is to be stoned. Imagine having an extended bout of paranoia while underground, yikes no thanks.

    • @TomandJulieMineExploring
      @TomandJulieMineExploring  Před měsícem +1

      @TheRockgremlin Haha, I'm guessing that was not left by a miner rather a visitor later after the mine closed. The thing I don't get is the number of modern beer cans that we see in mines. Who wants to sit is a nasty mine trying to enjoy a beer? Then, you have to navigate all the hazards and pitfalls on the way out when you have a beer buzz on. That's a big no thanks from me. I'll have my beer when I'm comfortably back at our base. Thanks for the comment, RG!😆
