My Current Favorite Show: Mrs. Davis

- Friends, I've recently tuned in to “Mrs. Davis,” a new TV series on @peacock that has quickly become my favorite show. The leading character is a committed religious sister named Sr. Simone (played by Betty Gilpin), who manages to save the world from a powerful algorithm, an artificial intelligence that basically knows all. The show is not interested in theological precision, but there is a spiritual motif at the heart of it, and it has to do with idolatry.

How I missed Bishop Barron’s commentary on culture/ movies/series!!!!
Same! I just commented on one of his movie reviews a couple of weeks ago asking for more.
Same. He's masterful at that.
I've seriously missed these
Like the early days of this channel. They were the best!
Miss these tidbits too
Ditto! Definitely missed these insights
Bishop B please do more movie/TV show reviews. This is how i discovered you in the first place. In fact its not an exaggeration to say that your movie reviews served as the catalyst for my return to God and the church
If I got off the grid I couldn’t listen to you and others like you who encourage me in my prayer and reflective prayer life
Amen.
One thing that helped me with fcbk was unfollowing everybody except immediate family and one best friend. Now when I open it I only see their posts and have to jump through hoops to see the others.
I gave up Facebook for Lent ,then I permanently deleted it. I’m very happy about that too.
My word! I thought I was the only one. Sketchy language and theology aside, there are elements of genius in this show. It had me hooked from the first episode. And by the way, the music in the show is both wonderful and bizarre. Loved it. Thank you, Bishop.
Ironically, I actually have CZcams to thank for watching more religious content than I might otherwise…
How is that ironic
@@od8401 is it a law that someone will challenge you if you use the word “ironic” in a comment? The review was discussing the dangers of AI becoming an idol yet algorithms in CZcams suggests a lot of religious content (kinda non-idol behavior or incompetent idol behavior depending on your point of view)
Likewise.
Well, it depends on the user and our choices and preferences.
As old adage goes: We become what we eat.
Guess that same applies what themes and genres we give time to lean/seen/watch, and algorithm is more than happy to give us...well, more.
It is a matter that we must still be in control while resist and filter that needs to even they're "good."
Why choose good if there are best (i.e., beauty, goodness, and truth) in the offing, after all.
Me too!
@@od8401How is it not ironic
God bless 🙏 ❤
It sounds like Sister Simone fled the grid, understood the grid and then fought the grid. Very good plan.♥️✝️
Amen amen amen amen amen amen. Very prophetic
Thank you
I’d like to see Bishop Barron make a whole video exploring the spiritual implications of ai.
Agreed. And we might see some spiritual wisdom amplified in ways that could surprise us. The eternal wisdom of God could easily "usurp" the power of AI for purposes we might not conceive of. If we zoom out to let's say 50,000 years, we've only had the revelations of Christ for about 2,000 years. These changes we see today are less than microscopic in the Divine perspective.
As a recently (2019-- "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was in 1977...") reconciled Catholic, I was intrigued by "Mrs. Davis", because I am all about AI, (just Go. Ogle. my name ;) And I really liked the first episode, but I was worried that I might have to go to confession for giving into watching ultra--rated R--violence and almost continuous profanity. But if Bishop Baron is ok with it, hell, I'm gonna keep watching, cuz I already just love the vibe of this show.
This show clearly takes place after the "technological singularity". That is when ASI, which is "artificial _super_ intelligence", usurps/transcends all of human affairs. The AI is definitely in charge of things. BTW, I believe "Mrs. Davis" is the first show ever to be written by humans in collaboration with AI. Yes, AI is also partially the writer of this show. Which is why the WGA (Writers Guild of America) is on strike. They know the AI is coming after their livelihood.
I have a question. Will God permit the "technological singularity" (TS) to occur? Or will he "Tower of Babel" us in some way to _stop_ it? As of now, barring the Second Coming of Jesus Christ between now and NLT than 2029, I see the TS as imminent, inevitable and _unstoppable_ . It _is_ going to happen. And _when_ it happens, is it possible that such a humanity encompassing event _is_ God's Will? The TS will put humans at a whole other level of intelligence that will make us from today look like "archaea" in intellectual comparison. But at such an elevated level of cognitive capability, would we as humanity be ready for _new_ revelations from God? I know that the Book of Revelations states flatly that there shall be no further revelations from God, but perhaps that is for humans as we are today. Who can know what good is possible for us at such an elevated level of thought.
For now, I pray daily for the Second Coming of Christ. And that He finds me and all of us here on Earth to be faithful and watchful servants. By God's Grace, by God's mercy.
God bless you all 🙏
Touche Bishop. Touche! God bless you Bishop Barron!
I lecture at my local University. I've been observing students for 8 years now. The worst students are those who spend lecture time heads buried in their laptops. The best students are those who sit in the two front rows and take notes (using pen and paper).
My wife who is high school teacher with 25 years experience wholeheartedly agrees with your experience.
Yessssss ........switch it offffffffffff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's kind of weird how cell phones give one an impression like they are connected to everybody else but it really makes you feel alone especially if you are on social media a lot. It is sort of like a type of false communion.
Yes. People are pulling out their phones to film attacks, etc instead of helping or even calling 911. Recently a man in a Vancouver B.C. coffee shop did selfies in front of a bleeding body on the ground. The man was a victim of a violent stabbing ( and he died of his injuries.) His wife and child were right there and witnessed the stabbing. No-one helped! One guy though “selfie time!” What a world we live in!
We need God, not more cell phones and AI and “friends” on social media.
I cannot LIKE this video enough!
What could be the reason? Just curious ...
Thank you for sharing Bishop Barron ❤
I’ll check this out! Thank you, Bishop Barron.
Thank you, bishop Barron!
Thank you! I was reading Fulton Sheen’s “Lift Up Your Heart” and he says very similar things about a dissipated intellect on pages 81-82. That was written back in 1950 - I’m reading the 1962 Universe Book edition. Amazing!
Some real food for thought. Deep thought. Thank you Bishop Barron.
Amen From Del Rio Texas.
Thank you for your recommendation and wise counsel. God bless you!
This is awesome. I've always wondered what "Spiritual Advisors" see when they consume media. Please give us more of this.
OMG....Bishop R, I just watched the first 3 episodes and i do believe that they summarized about 10 yrs of therapy. Thank you so much for rec'd this program since i don't watch TV/news etc.
God Bless and keep you,
יוי
Thank you Bishop Barron.God bless you 🕊️✝️🙏❤️
This commentary is spot on and brings to light how our society is gravitating toward technology. Thank you also for reminder of how our data is being collected. I’m intrigued, and going to consider getting peacock to watch this.
God bless Bishop Barron.
Your last words gave me goosebumps! Thank you for the challenge. Peace
Way to go Bishop Barron!!
Thanks Bishop, there was a recent fire in a school dorm, it was said to have taken the lives of twenty persons and I've been told, it was started by a student, because her phone was taken from her. The tragedy occured in Guyana, South America.😢 😢😢
Prayers for all those suffering in this needless tragedy🙏
Totally correct on all accounts. I too miss these little snippets on social movies and other things in our lives.
This very subject has been on my mind for a while, thank you bishop barron , i might stop thinking about it and actually take the plunge!
This is my fourth time watching this video, but I’m not sure what that says about me. I’m thankful for Bishop Barron. I joined the church this Easter.
"In a word we are not using them, they are using us" which eerily reminds me of that pioneering 1960's sci-fy show the Outer Limits and it's opening; We control the horizontal; We control; the vertical. Which of course Faithful Christians will recognize as a cross and we also Faithfully believe that it's Christ Jesus at the Cross who's in control. Furthermore we know that our fidelity lies in this Truth. And by God's Grace may it be so.
Thank you Bishop Barron for this thought provoking presentation.
Glad Bishop is reviewing shows again.
Thank you for the TV series recommendation. While one of our regular asceticisms is to eschew social media and digital entertainment, lately our Exodus 90 fraternity has been looking for uplifting movies and TV with Christian messages. Will keep in mind the theology of the show may not be precise.
Thanks Bishop Barron for your recommendation and advices. Interesting reflection about how much time do we spend searching in the Internet, and how much time do we use to pray to God. God bless You!
I'm striving for a better balance between pray and everyday living.
Thank you so much Bishop Barron for your advices about how we are using our time on the internet and so on instead of passing it next to God by praying or doing another interesting and creative things. This tv series cannot be watched in Spain, yet. It looks very interesting!
Thank you dear Bishop. Please share your thoughts on the grail's symbolism in the show!
Mrs. Davis: Thank you for the referral. Portraying the wedded relationship between Jesus (just Jay here) and Sister Simone was a genius way to penetrate the post-modern mind.
And it was daring of you to refer your listeners here, especially in-light of the manner in which Jesus is cursed by Wiley in the third episode. That tirade appears to me like the type of truth-telling that I welcome from my five now adult children. Behavior that would have been punished when they were children, but with adult kids a father learns to welcome guttural truth. I suspect God feels the same.
Wow the skills artistry and strength so clean 😮 good job very impressed 🤩
Bishop Barron, thank you very much for your review of Mrs Davis. I started watching, first 2 episodes, and stopped. Not sure if I will continue or not, but interested due to your 'review'. I am astounded about the amount of phone time we 'enjoy'. Your ending was eye-opening for me, as I am discerniug the call to the Diaconate (Episcopal Church), regarding the amount of prayer we spend each day, versus the false satisfaction of flipping through social media video, etc. I appriciate theology and the education I am receivig from your sermons, presesntations, and general sharing. Peace be with you. Tom
If l got off the grid. I found you fist 2016 as l was sick and stuck in bed so much. I would miss you! Word on fire. Sunday sermons. catholic education on catholic answers. The catholic talk show. Bible in a year for the 2nd time, catechism in the year with father Mike Schmidt.
So much that has helped to read my bible and engage with people over God love for us.
I am confused 😕 by your message today
I love the new office. Seems perfect backdrop for you.
What a precious comment.!!!! Getting off the grid has ALWAYS been a good idea. Even if it comes with a heavy price.
I think it comes down to moderation and intelligent, focused curation. Don’t aimlessly scroll. Don’t become the algorithm’s puppet. Pick a few top quality channels and decide when to enjoy them. Then jump off the grid and experience the real world.
Spot on! ❤️👍🏻
Bishop barron please do more of your movie/shows review i miss watching these. Also if possible (since i know you must be very busy) can you do a review of vinland saga? They depict some philosophy and some christian ones (they try to depict agape in one of their episode tho idk if it a correct portrayal)
The reason for the Bulterian Jihad from the Dune series of sci-fi novels "Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
I watched Mrs. Davis for the first time after watching Bishop Barrons video and im quite enjoying it. Its got a great Quenton Tarantino vibe.
Do your best to trick the algorithms and program them. In everything, at all times, have God guide you.
Thank you Bishop.
Glad you are not pulling any punches when sharing your thoughts Bishop 😊
Wow, this was fenomenal.

'Prisoner, tell me, who was it that wrought this unbreakable chain?'
'It was I,' said the prisoner, 'who forged this chain very carefully. I thought my invincible power would hold the world captive leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip.'

Agreed 😊❤
I'm always looking for interesting, worthwhile shows to watch and often can't find much if anything. I wasn't aware this one existed, but it's hard to find the good ones hidden in the ocean of bland garbage that's available today. So thanks for the tip Bishop, I'll check it out.
Thanks for being an intelligent voice on godly issues and this dark culture we're living in.
I'd never heard of this show, Bishop Barron! Thank you for the tip and may God bless you always!
More please
Thank you for bringing up "Mrs. Davis".
Although Bishop Barron doesn't recommend it, but the review is good enough to entice and stir curiosity.
I'm not really a series guy (sorry, even "The Chosen"), but checking it might rekindle the old routine back in the "CSI" heydays.
more tv and film reviews please!
Got to be on the grid to watch your videos😄
Bishop Barron thank you for broaching this subject. AI and social manipulation is a very serious problem. Don’t do social media. I hardly watch TV anymore because so much is just dark and mean.
I do use Hallow which I love!!!!! I would hate to give up watching you on CZcams and Word on Fire, along with many great Catholic apologists and wonderful Christian content. It would be so sad to give up the good because of the abuse. Praying for you and so many holy priests. We need you more than ever!!
!
More of this Bishop, thank you
Excellent example and short meditation about today's society. I love that Bishop Barron can always be in such a great touch with the world and bring our daily situations into the real contact with the divine.
I tried to watch Mrs Davis ( due to this video) but after the first 10 minutes of burning at the stake and about 12 decapitated heads I couldn’t take it anymore. Heads up about the gory violence would’ve been good. No pun intended.
Oddly enough…I had a dream about riding in the passenger seat of a R.V in Minnesota, the landscape all around me covered in snow. Strange, I’ve never been there before. It made me think of you Father Barron. God willing, I’ll be able to hear your homilies in person. God Bless your ministry, the Word on Fire. 🙏🙏🙏
So glad you brought this up. I’m tempted to watch but fluffed it off as inevitably being woke nonsense, or nunsense ( sorry, couldn’t resist). I can’t count how many times I never made it past epi 3 of almost anything…
My mother would often challenge my brothers and sister as to why we were watching this "crap" on TV. The antidote turned out to be spending our summers at our own off-grid cabin.
An experience that along with my parents instruction in the Faith formed me like nothing else!
Thanks Bishop Barron as always! But what if I spend a lot of time on my phone viewing podcasts from Word on fire and Catholic Answers all the time? Maybe too much of the good stuff is not good either! 😊
Bishop Barron, off subject. The Rosary Contest. I did log in an indicated a rosary. Buttttt for May I said 31 Rosaries. So you totals missed 30 Rosaries. You need to find a way, I don’t have to log in each day. Just a persons grand total. And The Blessed Mother want contest in June also. ❤️🙏
Getting of the grid seems like a good idea for the time being. A good question to ponder might also be: Can we regain control of these most powerful and useful technologies in a way that serves our purposes? It is a dreadful vision to behold, that all the very useful information under our fingertips should be cast into the oven along with the manipulating algorithms. Might there be a way to seperate wheat from chaff here? And if so what way is it?
As always, Bishop Barron, you are "spot on". Thank you.
💯💯
I am rarely if ever, using FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram et al. Yet, I use CZcams, emails, texts, and messenger. Sharing is one thing I think that I do that others might not really like as much as I think they will.
I miss these short videos about popular culture and how they connect with religion and God..
I always wanted bishop Barron review Fight Club xd
Another good TV show along the same genre, “Person of Interest” which was on CBS a few years ago. Starred Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, Taraji Henderson, Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi, and many more. Rich billionaire builds a powerful AI, a fight ensues over it’s control.
I miss that show! I watched it religiously until they stopped producing it.
Great show!
Thanks for this review Bishop. I'm gonna check out this show :)
The problem is that the show starts out great and then falls off a cliff into blasphemy at about episode 4
Thank you!
Your recommendation for the movie "A man for All Seasons" now stands as most favorite film of all time. Thank you Bishop Barron
But for Wales?
"For Wales? Why Richard, it profit a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world. . . but for Wales!"
@@katrinagiovanni891 what a movie, one of the best ever
@@davidfleb gosh I cry everytime. 🤣🙏
@@katrinagiovanni891 have you watched Becket (1964)? also a masterpiece
Episode 5 was like Oh my! What!? 😮
Saint Anthony the Great, St. Mary of Egypt, Saint Isidore of Seville, pray for us!
Really missed these "media review" videos
As an old friend told me “that which was your friend, easily becomes your master”.
I'd definitely give this a miss, after this summary; though it is good to see this issue being addressed. AI, certainly seems to me to be a 'game changer'. A difference in degree not kind. My instincts are for sure: " head for the hills"; but have always been pretty much so inclined.
Jesus I love you. All I have is yours. Yours I am yours I want to be. Do with me whatever you will.
This reminds me of the late 80's video game Phantasy Star 2, where an entire civilization was lulled into utter complacency by an omnipotent AI called "Mother Brain." I enjoy watching Frankenstein-themed entertainment, but it's kind of scary to see these themes coming to life.
Hi team, I have a technical query for you! When I wear earphones, the sound travels from my right earphone to my left and vice-versa. It’s not comfortable, can you please look into it? Thank you :)
Haha...something felt weird but I couldn't figure out what it was.
Would love to hear your review on Warrior Nun.
Couldn't finish Episode 4. Sacrilege
Gotta set that mic to mono.
.~Goodo brother! 👍❤️🙌😇✨💯
Watching on my phone, and I'm kind of conflicted about that
The worldly things we love-media, technology, etc.-will always have the capacity to ruin us.
Then ask yourself, why is my phone collecting information on how much time I spend on it and tracking my eye movement...
I wholeheartedly agree. I am a woman harmed by infidelity in my marriage. I was faithful for 27 years but I discovered my husband’s affair while we were away on our fun family vacation. What does this have to do with your talk about “technology” , social media, or AI? My husband’s mistress was a married coworker who knew us; knew her coworker’s life from his Facebook pictures of his happy marriage, his trips with a happy family, our beautiful 3 1/2 week 25th Anniversary trip, etc. Facebook can create a False Image of other’s lives….and women like her start to COVET and plan affairs with more desirable men. We know that many men admit to BACKBURNER- women they’d like to meet up with, see again, start up relationships with. Women have these BACKBURNERS too. Women are “friends” or “following” those coworkers, nice guys at the gym, that ex-boyfriend or crush from high school, men at church, etc. Affairs start with coveting!
P.S. Please pray for my husband (non-religious) and our 31 year marriage.
