- Belgian company Cyclowax has launched their "Clean chain starter kit". Is this the product that's going to make every cyclist want to convert to a waxed drivetrain?

Nice sprint... now, here I am 😂. I did watch this whole video though because I've been interested in waxing. Now a subscriber. Chapeau!
Awesome! Thank you!
Algorithm brought me here, nice channel! I like your trick for removing quick links without master link pliers... much easier than twisting a shoelace around it!😂
Thanks! Definitely a nice trick to know about when you’re stuck without a suitable tool 😉
Watching the Arctic Race of Norway and was just told to check out your channel... So here I am 😂🎉
So cool, welcome to the channel 😃
Amazing videos. Good luck in artic race
Thanks!
Great video!!!
Checking it out because you told me to on the Tour of Norway TV coverage 😂
Haha, thanks for that!
I started waxing my chain this year and I will never go back to oil based lubricants. Take chain off, put in a wax pot, after 30 minutes take it out and before ride put in on bike. I rotate two similar YBN chains. I bought cheap electric heater for body waxing, looks same as cyclowax but cost much less.
So do you re-use the quicklink (if yes, how often) or do you use new quicklinks...
Great content! Not sure about the product. I’ve been waxing for years, for much cheaper than this alternative. $5 Target crock pot, plain wax (paraffin) and $15 PTFE powder (PTFE powder may not be the best alternative, read about PFAS forever chemicals, instead Tungsten Disulfide can be used, but I’m not sure about its overall classification. You can also just avoid the additives). Agreed the cleaning is a pain, but it took 30 minutes. 10 minutes is gas, wipe, 10 minutes in degreaser, wipe, rinse in soapy water, soak in denatured alchohol. If alchohol is clear, all good. If not, lather, rinse, repeat. Degreaser on drive train, soap, brush. If it’s really bad, perhaps a more thorough clean. I use a Connex quick link. A little pricey, but no tools required. Coat hanger for the dipping tool. Always rinse the chain under boiling water, from a tea kettle, to clean off any residue, before rewaxing. I use a dedicated plastic strainer to hold the chain and link during rinsing. A pair of gloves is a good idea and you can wipe the outside chain, after removing from wax, to reduce the amount of wax that flakes off on your bike. You will also have to break the hardened wax on each chain link before installing, the gloves are helpful here. Don’t forget to wax the link also!
Yeah, definitely possible to do this a lot cheaper! Can I ask where you buy the paraffin wax from?
@@AntonStensby I had some from a “Candle Making” project my wife tried a few years ago. But it’s available from any hobby store or hardware store. About $10 for a 1 lb package. You just have to be mindful to make sure it’s pure paraffin and not scented, colored, or otherwise contaminated. I don’t think it would make a big difference in performance, but I don’t want my bikes or workshop area smelling like a Yankee Candle shop. 😆 I think some people may add paraffin oil to soften the wax a bit, but I’ve never had an issue.
Nobody should be using PTFE now that we know better
@@AntonStensby Most candles are made from paraffin wax. Just confirm by reading the label when buying.
Came here from the Arctic race highlights! You should do a video on the race.
¡Muchas gracias por el vídeo!.
Muy informativo. 👍👋
Gracias a ti!
@WECR Ha, first time I've been able to read and understand every word of a Spanish language comment...Yeah me.
just joined your chan because you advertized it in the arctic tour :). you just got cought up by the peloton sadly!
Thanks man! Hard day today 😅
@@AntonStensby yeah the finish was a total battlefield! The dutch commentators at eurosport mentioned you as 'the youtuber' a couple of times, so I hope you got a few new subs ;)
@@maanvis81 Nice! Made it above 1.000 subs today, so it was good for something!
Checked out 👌🏻
Nice 😁
Cool video!
Whats your intervals now between waxing?
Every 3-500km or after a wet ride
@@AntonStensby WOW!
You are quick 🤘
Thanks for the update. I'm still in the "thinking about "stage. It's very similar to what I'm doing with traditional chain lube. And once a year new chain and cassette.
Have a great week ahead and if you ever in south Portugal let me know, great routes here😎
Haha, notifications are turned on ;) Would recommend wax! Now, when I am on training camp without the waxer, I just use CeramicSpeed UFO drip on my waxed chains.
Not planning any trip to Portugal, but will let you know if it happens ;)
do you still deep clean the used chain and wax it .
If you are talking about the old chain that had oil on it, then no, I would not try to clean it for waxing. The reason being that you would never get rid of all the grease and grit once the chain has been used outside.
I agree. It is very hard to properly clean a used chain. I did that for my static bike and all dirt that is not removed, will come out during use. By rewaxing you will pollute the wax, therefore reducing the number of times you can reward with the same tablet of wax
Note: the static bike used to be my road bike. That’s why the chain was dirty
Nice set, but all parts seperately available for about 70 bucks. So where is the benefit of the set costing 3x?
You’re right, it’s cheaper buying it all seperate. The benefit is probably getting it all in one kit, without any fuss.
Should note that the chain itself is worth 75 bucks, and it’s included in the price
@@AntonStensby Ok, I did not factor in the chain and the work to degease/wax it. That alters the value for money significantly.
If you still need to wax the chain after first ride... Why not just get YBN chain without packaging grease, nice electric heater and just do it yourself? You'd spend like 1/3rd of the money for pretty much the same amount of labor and you'd get the same effect. And you can use liquid wax to keep it fresh
Yeah, as I pointed out, getting the stuff you need from different suppliers will be cheaper. But Cyclowax makes it easier for everyone that wants an easy start to waxing.
Where do you buy YBN chains without grease btw? I would need a Sram chain for my drivetrain anyway …
@AntonStensby never used a YBN on 12sp but you really need need a flat top chain. I use Ultegra and Dura Ace chains on my 12sp SRAM cassettes on my main road bike without issue.
I also use Shimano chains without issue on my TT bike(I train with a 1x and a Rival 10-36 on my TT bike) and race with a Shimano 11-32 on my disc wheel without issue
Nice to hear that it works well for you. Considering that the rollers of the Sram chain are larger than on e.g. Shimano, I would personally not risk slipping the chain during a sprint effort and potentially crashing.
@AntonStensby it's worked great for me and a ton of my customers. I'm not small either, an 88kg cat 1 and I can't get the chain to not do what chains do
There is always a protective layer that prevents the chain from corroding. That needs to be removed as well, before waxing
Bought a slow cooker off Amazon for like $10, and ZFS recommended wax for $30. Much cheaper. Had to degrease my own chains mind you. The slow cooker is small but bigger that that one. That one looks way too small. Mine is just about perfect size.
I think it would make good gift... Definitely don't heat additives/wax indoors. super toxic teflon is negative watts to your body LOL>
Hehe, that’s a great point. I think this will end up in my garage anyway
It's really just parafin wax, go buy some candles instead and save your money.
Candles have dyes and other crap. Just go buy blocks of Gulf Paraffin on the baking aisle.
@@tarantulasam7609 true I meant those little wax lights that come in the aluminum trays. It doesn't have the "low friction" additive added but I'm not convinced it makes a difference if I'm completely honest.
I’ve been using just straight paraffin for years. My buddies buy speed wax. $2.50 for three bricks vs $40.00 bucks a bag, I’ll keep sticking with straight paraffin.
Arctic Race of Norway brought me here...! 😅
Nice, welcome to the channel 😄
waxed chains are not silent, they are in fact louder - they are only very silent for the first 30km - as soon as the wax falls off, and it will, the chain gets actually very loud. please do not spread misinformation. I do wax my chain too, and its great, the chain wear is much less and it never gets "dirty" like a lubed chain, you can clean it with a hot towel then reapply liquid based wax. its important that the wax gets inside the tiny gaps between and inside the chain links. after 500km you should reapply hot wax, or apply liquid wax after every 200-300 and reapply hot wax after 1000km.
Does it get more silent after few hunderd kms? That is what silca claims (when the wax is completely ‘inside’ the chain) ?
@@cyclingjack tha is actually not what I am experiencing - I use silca secret chain wax and liquid wax in combination. I usually hot wax every 500-800km then apply liquid wax after the first ride and occasionally apply liquid wax 1-2 times before I hot wax and the chain is still kinda loud compred to my unwaxed bikes which feature the same SRAM apex groupset.
It’s not misinformation, it’s personal experience which I share. I am currently also using Cyclowax on MTB, road and static bike. As the Connex quick link is very easy, no tools needed, I only wax. I don’t like a ‘hybrid’ solution, as I am convinced it will pollute the wax
All you need is to make that black stand by yourself.
Yeah, if you have everything else you need, that could be a good option 😊
Not for that price
How much are you getting paid for this video? 'Just $219' for a chain, a small block of wax, a cable tie and a mat. Wow, what a bargain!
Haha, this is not a paid video, it’s a review. I even commented on the price being a little high, and noted that you would be better off economically getting the parts yourself from the different suppliers. This kit is suitable for those that want an all-in-one package, ready to use out of the box
@@AntonStensby "A little high"? Well, as long as daddy pays, I think. Quite the arrogant guy.
I’m sorry, how does it make me arrogant? 😅
But considering that the included chain retails for $75, I don’t think the price of the kit is more than a little high, no.
If you don’t want it, just don’t buy it. He is only providing options and leaves it to you to choose
290 Euros? Yeah, they have these wax people on the golden leash. This is laughable! Thumbs down.
219 euros it is, but yeah, as i commented in the video, the price may be what’s driving people away from buying this kit
219 euros for something that is less effective than 20W-50 engine oil. Yup, one born every minute 😂
You expect me to remove the chain from the bike? Not enough time in life for that. I have a life off the bike too. WD-40, spray on immediately wipe off, cleans and "lubes" for 300 miles. 30 seconds. 50 years of WD-40 for my chain. WD-40 was invented on the day I was born. Born to WD-40 :)
I totally agree!
Not expecting anyone to do anything 😜 But waxing a chain would give it a 5-10 times longer lifespan than when using oil, because of the low friction and the fact that wax does not attract abrasive particles.
Just have two chains.
I get 3000 miles from chain and cassette before a .25 inch "stretch. My chain costs only $15.00, you could save maybe $15 with wax and get 6000 miles but I doubt it. There is no way you will get 10x or ever 5x that with wax, 5x = 15,000 miles, no way.
Cyclowax comes with a Connex chain, including a quick link. This quick link is re-usable and removing the chain and putting it back on can be done in less than 1 min. Rewaxing can be done while cleaning your bike, so hardly any additional time needed. In my opinion waxed chain saves time and money on the long run
