  • On November 15, 2022, the Washington Metro opened an extension of their silver Line to Dulles Airport and Ashburn. I was invited to ride on the ceremonial inaugural train after sharing a beloved Metro Memory, and was gifted a silver ticket for the ride! So - what was it like?

1:40 THERE'S ME IN THE BACK! I'm the one who wore the Silver Dress, had on the Metro Line Dots Face mask, the tote, and the silver makeup! I'm right behind Miles' mom!

I was there at the SV Extension event! Lol, you should've seen me at the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station! I literally made the crowd say "Here we are, Metro! Can you handle us?!" 😆 I was moving my pennant and my silver pom-pom before the iconic 7000-Series Train stopped here to pick us up for the 6 Stations tour!

Anyone can make a video that says trains are good, but actual on-the-scene transit journalism is a tremendously underfilled niche. I really appreciate folks like you who cover it.

My history with Metro is much longer than yours--probably more like your Dad's. While on a business trip to Washington, D.C. in January 1979, I made a special effort to ride on my very first urban rail system and was blown away by the Metro. My love for mass transit began that day. (Since then I've been on 48 different systems worldwide, but Metro is still my favorite.) My first Metro grand opening ride was December 1, 1979, when the Orange Line was opened to Ballston. I was there on August 25, 1984, when the Red Line extended to Grosvenor. I left the area for many years but had a very special day on January 13, 2001, when my son (10 years old) and I were there to celebrate the completion of the original 103-mile system at Branch Avenue. He asked if we could ride all the lines that day, and we did (riding in the front car of each train almost exclusively)! Fast forward to July 26, 2014. My son was now a graduate student at Virginia Tech, but he drove home so that we could attend the opening of the Silver Line. We visited every one of the new stations. And on November 15, 2022, we once again rode the Silver Line on a Metro opening day visiting all six stations. Woo!

My (late) father and I used to ride the metro end to end when I was a kid too! In my case it was the Orange line from Dunn Loring all the way to MD then back. Interesting how so many of us have similar stories about Metro + our dads.

I was on the first revenue westbound train out of Downtown Largo! The trip took about an hour and 36 minutes, and although we may not have been the first to pull into each station, the energy was infectious when we finally got to Whiele-Reston East and went into as-of-then uncharted territory. Overall, it was a blast.

Wow it’s crazy how everyone in the videos and like you love the dc metro and grew up on it. I grew up on the nyc subway my whole life since I was born and all I wanted to do was take the train growing up even though we always had a car. The nyc subway is old and very different than the dc metro though less modern but still cool and original pre war systems

  • @Leonard_Wilson
    @Leonard_Wilson Před rokem

I’m from the Big Apple. The first time that I rode the Metro was in 1994 when I was 9. I immediately noticed that it was cleaner and more futuristic than the NYC subway.
Without getting into the specifics, the Metro has declined in quality over the years. Still, it’s a fun system to railfan. I really wanted to be there on opening day, but I had to work. I’ll check it out on Memorial Day weekend.

For expansion I'd like to see a Bethesda-Tysons link next, but maybe there is something in the downtown core that can be built out. There is a stub tunnel under the Pentagon waiting for a line down Columbia Pike to Seven Corners and Bailey's Crossorads

My history with The DC Ⓜ️etro goes back to when I was a kid: my family and I were visiting the city-I also have kinfolk there-and went to The Mall and various museums (for us, it was The Museum of History and Technology), but something sparked interest for me about The DC Ⓜ️etro for many years to come: being I'm from NYC, I thought DC was too small in geographical size to even HAVE a subway system; 1.5 decades [and additional 7 years] later, I'm riding in the subway sectionally, missed openings along the way, and covered all stops, so we're looking at a 17 year gap from the last time I was in DC and now this long delayed brand new opening. . . .I celebrate in transit fan spirit 🎊/🚇🚉

Congratulations ClassyWhale. I bumped into Miles group later on that day and we all had a blast. I was there for the opening of the original silver line leg but to me, the opening of the Tide in 2011 will always hold near and dear to me.

      1) I had a stretch of three straight years where I was among the first to ride on a transit system's inaugural passenger, or in the case of 2016, one of the first passengers to ride Metro (of Los Angeles) Expo Line to Santa Monica. In chronological order, the Expo Line Extension (from Culver City to Downtown Santa Monica), since changed to the E Line and have since (earlier this year in fact) extended to downtown L.A. to East Los Angeles. [The former Blue Line is now extended to Azusa (which includes Pasadena) is now the longest light rail line in the world.]
      2) Back closer home, I was among the first passengers to ride the Hartford Line from New Haven, Conn. through to Hartford and finally, to Springfield, Mass. (Tickets for opening weekend were free and I went to Springfield and visited the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame.)
      3) Lastly, after endless plans to build a subway line on Manhattan's Upper East Side, the W Train finally arrived for its first segment of the Second Avenue Line. And if that wasn't exciting to witness three new subway stations opening in 1998, get ready for three more stations as construction of the second extension of the Second Avenue Line (from 96th Street to 125th Street/ Lexington-Park Avenues where the Q will transfer with the 4, 5 and 6 subway lines and the Metro-North) has just begun.

Metro sure has grown quite a bit since being stationed in that area for eight years. While stationed @ Walter Reed AMC on GA Ave had an apartment on the 16th floor in Silver Spring, MD. There I could look out @ the station and watch all the trains go by and if memory serves me correctly Amtrak also had tracks there too. Would love to go back and ride all the lines!

That's great you got a Silver Ticket and could make the last-minute trip from Pittsburgh to attend. In was on the Silver Ticket train too but was in the first car with only 5 other people.
Looks like you missed the grand opening festivities Tuesday morning at IAD and Ashburn. Those were fun (although a LOT of politicians' speeches).
I'm irked at WMATA for messing up the schedule. The Silver Ticket train was supposed to then depart Ashburn as the first revenue train eastbound but Metro dispatched one a few minutes earlier (with Miles in Transit et. al. aboard). The whole plan was for the Silver Ticket winners to be on the first regular passenger train departing Ashburn and that somehow got screwed up.
Other than that and the frigid, rainy weather, a great day!

I almost went to the opening of Fonix at Faroup Sommerland in Denmark. I have been to season openers for Hersheypark (2017, still haven’t ridden any of the triple towers), Cedar Point (2021, working-I guess I worked opening of Snake River, but only in the front of the park), Tibidabo (March), and Walibi Rhône-Alps (oddly the Wednesday of Holy Week, then closed til the weekend IDK). I still went to the Madrid park’s opening weekend, but was at Escorial on the Friday that started the season-which was 2 days after my birthday and when a winter drought decided to end (#globalwarming)

Too bad nobody who actually uses this system to commute to work got the chance to do this since they didn't start operating trains on the first day until after 12 noon. But hey, let's let the media have their fun, and all of the politicos get their face time. The rest of us will do what we have always done. Day in and day out, in my case for more than 30 years, and never seeing improvements. Yeah, we now have a line that comes within a 6 minute drive of my house. And it took 8 years to go from the first phase of the Silver Line to this. Wooo F'ing Hoo.

OK, so what about the folks who have been here since the beginning. The people whose businesses were destroyed when Metro delays drove them out from lack of customers being able to access their business. Sure, now that Metro is complete, these are the folks they want to highlight. Just fucking business as usual. Once there is something to celebrate, look who shows up...🤦🏿‍♂️
