Sean Connery: Fame, James Bond, and Controversy

- Sean Connery rose to fame in the 1960s portraying a British secret agent. He became part of that decade’s British Invasion, which saw music, films, television programming, and fashion from the United Kingdom overwhelm cultures in Europe and North America. Yet throughout his long life, Connery recoiled at being called British. He was, loudly and proudly, a son of Scotland. He called himself a Scot and wore a clan’s kilt when he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
Connery was not the first choice to play James Bond on film, and the fictional agent’s creator, Ian Fleming, openly disapproved of his casting. Yet Connery’s acting talents were such that he not only won over Fleming, but the writer added portions of Sean’s performance in new stories, including his Scottish background. Connery eventually tired of the role and branched out significantly, yet he remains the standard against which subsequent portrayers of Bond are measured.
In his long career, he worked with distinguished directors including John Huston, Sidney Lumet, and Alfred Hitchcock. He starred opposite notable actresses including Tippi Hedren, Lana Turner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Candace Bergen, and Gina Lollabrigida, to name just a few. It was his Bond that introduced the bevy of actresses known to fans and film buffs as “Bond girls”. His film career covered more than 50 years and led to international acclaim. Yet, he is forever linked with the persona he created when he first uttered, “Bond…James Bond”.

Already doing so guys!😊😊😊😊
Already starting to getting used to Kyle as the host; he's so laid back haha
*KARL, sorry, I know someone called Kyle and it confused me
Not mentioning Indiana Jones and King Arthur as well as mildly talking about Entrapment is bushleague
😮😮😮😮🎉😊
The man was Bond, King Arthur, and the Highlander's mentor. The man was legendary.
Don't forget he was also the Dragon in Dragonheart. Truly a Transcendental actor.
The Man Who Would Be King!
And he escaped into Alcatraz! With Nick Cage no less!
And Indiana Jones' dad.
Dragon MORALES!!!! 😂
My cousin and his wife sometimes get in these heated arguments and my cousin will make it worse by arguing in a near perfect Sean Connery voice. It's so funny
You forgot to mention the movies Outland, Time Bandits, Meteor, Rising Sun, Entrapment, Dragon Heart (voice), Finding Forrester, The Longest Day, Zardoz, Cuba, A Bridge Too Far and several others.
I knew Connery as Bond, but better in Hunt for Red October. But you didn’t mention his one Spielberg/Lucas film- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Definitely a supporting role, but, for me anyway, a very memorable one.
He actually got the role of Henry Jones, Sr. because the production and the writers said “who could be Indiana Jones’ father, and one of them said James Bond. So they hired Sean Conery.
The first movie I saw Connery in was Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Watched that as a kid so many times I lost count.
Connery was actually the last living person from that film which is weird to think
"I am not an Englishman, I was never an Englishman, and I don't ever want to be one. I am a Scotsman! I waw Scotsman and I will always be one." -- Sean Connery
Fine but they're both still British.
I am disappointed that Zardoz is not even mentioned, since, in my opinion, that was an awesome movie.
To this day I always say "Junior" the same way he called Indiana Jones in Last Crusade, it's just that catchy.
YES Quite catchy bloke.
I think you are doing a great job, Simon can't be everywhere...
It was never Simon’s channel to begin with
Lord knows he tries!
@@PeachM0denot the point but you are correct
Simon is everywhere
Don't say his name 3 times in front of the mirror.
Sean Connery was the man
Sean Connery played an Egyptian in service to the Spanish crown with a Scottish accent in Highlander, that has to be the weirdest choice ever. Also: Why was Highlander not mentioned in this bio?
I KNOW RIGHT. was so expecting it to be
Especially after the litany of other lacks of accents
Don't forget his apprentice was a French man playing a Scot
I agree. How can you do a story about Sean Connery without mentioning Highlander. I also noticed the exclusion of Indiana Jones and Last Crusade.
@@usonumabeach300 and an American was playing a Russian
For me, as an old soldier, the two best films Sean Connery ever made were The Hill, in which he gave a great performance alongside Harry Andrews, who was a great actor as a Sergeant-Major, bust and imprisoned for cowardice and as Sergeant Daniel Carnahan in The Man who would be King, both were great pieces of acting.
Don't apologize for the suit I think you look great. I hold fond memories of Sean Connery not because of his James Bond appearances but because of his part of Draco, the last dragon for Dragon Heart. Loved that film as a child, and I think it's almost exclusively responsible for my love of fantasy.
Exactly the same here, that’s always who I thought of him as
You overlooked his two most important films: Darby O’Gill and Zardoz.
As an Irishman, I think his performance in Darby O'Gill was Oscar worthy 😂
You forgot about two movies that he was in, DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE and ZARDOZ. I can't imagine why he took the part in ZARDOZ, maybe he thought that working with John Boorman was a good career move....it really wasn't.
DARBY O'GILL, it had the virtue of being a really cute movie.
I was unsure if I was going to stay subscribed with the new presenter but you won me over with this episode. Well done sir.
As with anything, it's a growing process. ;) Karl needed time to grow into the shoes he's filling. We think he's doing a great job.
@@Biographicswhat happened to Simon ???
@@blakecason436he downloaded Final Fantasy 14 and has not been seen since
Connery portraying reclusive JD Salinger-like author William Forrester was very memorable as well.
Keep the clothes Karl! You look sharp! 😎😎😎😎
Karl's a bit self conscious about it, but he looks great in a suit. :)
@@Biographics Amén to that!
Thanks for the content! Narration was spot on and easily understood, script was interesting, and editing is top notch as always.
Karl's youre honestly a great host. Love Simon honestly but you bring a refreshing take on it and is much appreciated. Enjoying the videos as always and i cant wait to see more of you!
The information is well researched and very interesting. Thank you so much! And please consider Ferdinand the Saint of Castile and James the Conqueror of Aragon, two great Reconquista figures.
What happened to Simon?
I came here to the comments because I was like “Wait, isn’t this a Simon channel?” You did a good job and I’m still a fan of the channel. The suit looks great, adds some class.
The fact they tried to cancel him on the day of his death over a Barbara Walters interview makes him even more epic
He's in alot of movies. One of my favorite roles is The Name Of The Rose. I was blown away him playing Sir William of Baskerville. A monk detective. I saw late night Cinemax then rented the vhs and showed a friend of mine. He loved it too. I think I have it on dvd.
“I can’t afford but I suppose it depends. As long as there’s enough enthusiasm, then one wants to continue”
Sean Connery
Sean Connery "the original James Bond"...
How can you talk about his foreign accents without mentioning Highlander 2? A Belgian playing a Scot, and a Scot playing a Spaniard, neither altering their accents one iota.
Just Cause was/is an underrated movie
Don’t overlook his role in The Longest Day.
He was also great in the World War II movie A Bridge Too Far.
One of my favourite all time actors, and the only Bond actor to win an Oscar, winning Best Supporting Actor for 1987’s The Untouchables. He’s just amazing in everything I’ve seen him in.
Good video. Enjoyed it.
Your suit looked good.
You forgot his second most famous role… he was Indy’s dad in The Last Crusade.
Whenever my mother heard about Sean Connery, she was always hyped and joyful. That guy has a high influence on women, for sure.
The first film I ever saw that had Sean Connery was "Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade".
You have slowed your speech down, which helps tremendously, and I think you’re doing a great job.
You should've talked about Zardoz.
The best Bond of his generation & the same can be said of Pierce Brosnan.
Sean Connery has always been my favourite but have to agree with you on Brosnan. Smooth ..... Now..... Daniel Craig did something spectaular with the role and right now I think is in a league of his own...... Great commentary !
Wow. A Sean Connery bio and not a mention of his role in "Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade," one of his greatest non-Bond roles. It's like talking about Jesus and not mentioning the part when he was resurrected.
Thank you for the video on Sean Connery & he really was a good actor
In regards to bad accents, nothing compares to Highlander. A Scot playing a Frenchman and a Frenchman playing a Scot. I still am a big fan.
This is awesome, two of my favourite CZcams presenters!
Great, I appreciate the adjustments.
Fantastic. really enjoyed listening to the life of Sir Sean.
Ok. Didn't take long to get over Simon handing over the reins. I mean Simon is a damn treasure, but you've done a very good job. I was waiting for the mention of Connery's big role as Indy's dad in Indiana Jones and The Holy Grail, but it never came. Cheers!
Great job carl! Keep up the good work
I enjoyed the episode but there's just one problem.
How do you do a video on Sean Connery and not mention Highlander or Last Crusade?
Karl, you look fantastic in that suit ‼️ I was so distracted that I know have to watch this video again🤩😘
Ooohhh Don't you look all handsome and snazzy in that suit... You do wear it well dearie. Loved the video and I am really enjoying you hosting the channel
Impressive suit Karl. I think this was a well done video and I am a fan of your presentation style.
Much appreciated!
Interestingly enough, the idea of _Clan Kilt_ wasn't a thing until more recent history.
*Thanks to* The British if I recall. Before that, it was just Kilts they wore.
I've not seen enough Bond movies to make a judgement.
He'll always be Draco to me
Clan tartans have always been a thing, just they weren't usually used for kilts til the 19th century, if I am remembering correctly.
The Tartan matters.
Still my favorite Bond and one of my second favorite actors.
Quick and to the point.
well at least you got the same theme music
Love the supposedly very Scottish 'Highlander' played by Christopher Lambert with a thick Belgian accent whilst Connery plays his friend Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, who at one point explains his actual Scottish accent as being a product of him being raised in Egypt but spending alot of time in both Japan and Spain ...PMSL! WTF!
I was a little surprised the author didn't mention Highlander. But I guess it was only a pop culture sensation for my generation?
@@Biographics Surely it was a masterpiece!, i didn't buy a sword and kilt for a pop culture sensation...did i?
They're re-booting the highlander. If they don't get Ewan McGregor as the Spaniard with Ewan speaking in his native accent then I don't know what.
@@claytonberg721 Oh yes! Or... 'Wee Jimmy Krankie'
Cant believe there is no mentioning of Dr. Jones Senior
Sir thomas sean connery rest in peace(1930-2020)
Karl, I gotta say that I love your use of props and never apologize for it
Thank you.
Good thanks
You forgot his excellent performance as the 2,437 year old Immortal Juan Sanchez Villalobos Ramirez, chief metallurgist to King Charles V of Spain in Highlander.
A fabulous video on a fantastic actor
A biography of Sean Connery that doesn't mention Highlander?
I had no idea he died back in 2020. Sad, but I guess he wasn't exactly young and lived a good, full life. Definitely the best bond in my eyes. He set the blueprint. Also loved him in most other things I saw him in. That being said, thank god he turned down LOTR. Ian McKellen was the perfect choice and Connery just would not have worked in the role. Regal roles, yes. A Wizard? Fuck no!
Love the suit!! Looks great on you.
My favorite Bond is Roger Moore because his movies were always the most ridiculous and cartoon like.
17:04 Don't forget Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves... Mel Brooks even had Cary Elwes call him out in Men in Tights...
*Sherriff:* And why should the people listen to YOU!?
*Robin:* Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent.
Alright, so I'm only 16 minutes in, and Karl is listing off some of Connery's non-Bond roles. Before he mentions it, if he mentions it (which it should be mentioned, it was his last movie) I unironically love League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. So cheesy, but so good
The Wind and the Lion is a GOOD film to watch with some GREAT people in the film with wonderful music.
It all too bad you didn't mention these other movies that he was in that I really enjoyed his characters Time Bandits in the Highlander very awesome underrated movies thumbs up man you're doing a good job I miss Simon but man you was doing a good job
Lovely job,Mr.Smallwood
I miss Simon, he's the brand of this channel. Just isn't the same without him.
Love Sean in the Highlander
Connery’s role in the third Indiana Jones movie was superb
I've always wondered what Sean would have been like as Alfred in batman, Obi Wan or a jedi. Also possible bonds through time. Michael Caine, Robbie Williams, Hugh Jackman
That is a GREAT suit😊
Please, make a Biographics video on Pele. Thank you!
Golden eye is just so memorable to me, largely because the game is actually good
My fave is Casino Royale (I'm not Karl, btw).
@@Biographics Awesome!
We used it to settle arguments as kids and regularly held tournaments in college on the N64, despite several of us owning the Wii version as well.
The best definitive James Bond
I literally have watched every 007 movie Sean Connery definitely is bond. I was very saddened when he passed away in his sleep but everyone has to go at sometime. Anytime, Daniel Craig is my top bond these days due to his film output being higher tier. Daniel Craig’s Casino Royal, Skyfall, & No Time To Die all are fantastic. Sean Connery had Goldfinger, From Russia With Love that both were among the best films. Anyways, Enjoyed the video keep up the good work and nice suit.
Tut tut Karl......No mention of the 1974 (comedy) sci-fi film "Zardoz"?? 😆
We'll add it to the old watch list.
@@Biographicscool! And please do reconquista figures
Has this channel been transferred to a new owner or we can expect the old host back?
"Goldfinger"!!! Best Bond Movie!! Best Villain!! Best Bond!!!! End of !
Well if you look at physical types like Sean, they all lose their hair earlier. But what is hair when you have a gentlemen like that.
And you look dashing…
Yea Piers Bosnan is the bond for me, he was in the ps2 game covers as well
Having a favorite "Bond" is like having a favorite "Doctor", mostly everyones will be different. Gotta so though, mines is Daniel Craig mainly because of "Skyfall" being my favorite Bond movie.
Awesome.
I’m so used to Karl’s content on Fact Fiend. Also, I’m French, German, Irish, English, and a little Eastern European and Asian (don’t know exactly where in Eastern Europe or Eastern Asia) and I can only do an Irish accent.
how are you western European and Easter european and Asian at the same time?
@@m1lst3r89 two people, one from Western Europe and the other Eastern Europe, had sex and then their descendant went to Eastern Asia and had sex with someone there.
good joke, Karl.
good point about 'The Rock'.
I remember Jackie Stewart (another Scot) - 'What a fantastic motor race.' Great commentating by him in the '60s.
And, Indiana Jones' dad!!! 'We named the dog Indiana.'
One of the writers finally escaped the basement, clobbered simon unconscious, and tried to take his place, hoping nobody would notice
No mention of highlander?!?
Love this man
Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond. So much violenece in License to Kill and Livings Daylights is underrated
Sean will always be James Bond. I liked Roger Moore, but Sean was and always will be #1. Hunt for Red October with Sam Neil, he was gorgeous, as was Sam. He aged wonderfully. I must have a weakness for certain accents, his Scottish and Richard Burton’s Welsh.
OMG ITS KARL!!! CROSSOVER TIME!!!
I have been viewing this channel for some years now, I liked Simon, but I definitely enjoy Karl's voice much better, I think the way he speaks and energy is perfect.
I have been binge watching Top tenz and biographics for about 3 days straight.
I agree with the Scots about being Scottish not British. I'm English by birth and don't like being called British, I find it dismissive to the Scots, Welsh and Irish etc to be called British 💜
Edit for fashion feedback - your suit just looks black. I'm guessing it's a dark tartan but you do it justice 😉
But the union was Scotland's idea.
@@georgeprchal3924 the UK and Britain are two seperate things.

13:00 If ‘James Bond’ is “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, then he can’t hit a woman or queen if she has the last word.
He should just be humble and apologize for the mishap; shaken, not stirred..
「 End Credits theme plays loudly 」
15:26 Ferrari.
16:00 Highlander - Scotsman plays an Egyptian, Frenchman plays a Scotsman. 10% of dialogue an accent is attempted.

Great suit of idea wearing that for the best james bond in my opinion
