    *Maggie - A Girl of the Streets* was full of atavistic & hellish symbolism:
    page 1: "howling urchins" "Devil's Row" "insane demon"
    All throughout the book there are many more. Crane was portraying an urban jungle, a hell on earth. This is what the book is all about.
