  • In this video, I embarked on a culinary adventure, wielding a sieve in an unexpected Acrylic pour experiment. The result? A delightful surprise. I realized I could refine my technique and minimize the chaos next time. Despite some of the paint being too thin and slipping through the sieve without much fanfare, the final outcome was satisfying. Next time, a thicker pour will be my strategy.
Acrylic pouring is an art technique that involves mixing acrylic paints with a pouring medium to create fluid, dynamic designs on a surface, usually canvas. Here’s a step-by-step explanation of the process:
    Preparation:
Materials: You need acrylic paints, a pouring medium, silicone oil (optional for creating cells), mixing cups, stir sticks, and a canvas or other surface to pour on.
Work Area: Cover your work area with a drop cloth or plastic sheet to protect against spills. Elevate your canvas on cups or a rack to allow excess paint to drip off.
    Mixing Paints:
Combine Paint and Medium: Mix each color of acrylic paint with a pouring medium in separate cups. The pouring medium helps to thin the paint without losing its pigment and ensures a smooth flow.
Consistency: Aim for a consistency similar to warm honey or melted ice cream. You may need to adjust the ratio of paint to pouring medium to achieve this.
    Adding Silicone Oil (Optional):
Creating Cells: Add a few drops of silicone oil to the paint mixtures. This helps create “cells” or small, round areas of separated color that add interest and complexity to the design.
    Pouring Techniques:
Dirty Pour: Layer different colors in a single cup and then pour the mixture onto the canvas in one go.
Flip Cup: Layer colors in a cup, then flip the cup onto the canvas and lift it to release the paint.
Puddle Pour: Pour individual colors directly onto the canvas in separate puddles and tilt the canvas to blend them.
Swipe: Pour paint onto the canvas, then use a tool (like a palette knife or a piece of cardboard) to swipe across the surface, creating streaks and patterns.
    Manipulating the Paint:
Tilting: Gently tilt the canvas in different directions to spread the paint and create intricate patterns.
Blowing: Use a straw or a hairdryer to blow the paint and create unique designs.
Torching: Use a butane torch to gently heat the surface, causing the silicone to rise and form cells.
    Drying:
Allow to Dry: Let the canvas dry flat and undisturbed for at least 24-48 hours, depending on the thickness of the paint.
    Finishing:
Seal: Once dry, seal the painting with a clear varnish or resin to protect the surface and enhance the colors.
Acrylic pouring is a popular technique because it allows for a lot of creativity and experimentation. Each pour is unique, and the process can be both relaxing and exciting as you watch the paint flow and interact to create unexpected designs.

Cool outcome. I loved it at 01:56!! I would love to see you use negative space on the canvas now and again.

Absolutely agree. I will try this again and not stretch it out. Have the paint dry with the canvas exposed is what you mean, right ?

@@malachi.creates Yup, use the blank canvas to enhance the parts with color!!

What do you mix in paints?

For this video I just slightly diluted the paints with water and thats it. Not too much water if I had to guess it was like 5 % water to paint volume

Too bad it stole all the outer rings of color 😮

Yeah but that means my next attempt will be a ring and I'll keep it that way using the negative space as part of the piece. Stay tuned
