    I loved my Atari 1040 STe. Carrier command, Millenium 2.2, Deuteros, Elite, Stunt car racer, Dungeon Master, Resolution 101. Such great games. It doesn't feel like the spirit of those games has ever been recaptured.

    So much fun watching this, I forgot just how much me and my friends were into these games, what was probably only 2-3 years of my life from 12-14 yrs old seemed like a lifetime! I never had any money so used to look forward to the demos on the cover disk of ST Format each month, Gods, Magic Pockets, Llamatron, the clicking of the microswitches in the joystick, pulling fluff out the bottom of that clunky mouse, the loud bang and flash when I tried to add another half meg of memory and forgot to reconnect the power supply properly. The computer game shop in town was just like record shops were years later. I even did all my university work on it in the late 90s before eventually calling it a day.

      Yep - got hold of a 1040 STE in 2018, and just this summer I spent an inordinate amount of time just getting a USB optical mouse to work properly with it. It's a lifesaver, and I can now play Carrier Command the way I always wanted to.
      The mouse issues with mechanical mice in general, defined that era of computer use. Excellent system.

  • @DerDude1977
    @DerDude1977 Před 3 lety +12

    I am glad I had an Amiga. ST games (apart from 3D graphics, which were a bit faster) almost always looked inferior to Amiga 500 versions and had a much worse sound/music. You also see that the ST-games had fewer (16) colours compared to the Amiga. Especially obvious in Mokey Island. But some programmers did a good job. Speedball 2 looks very good for example. Or Formula One Grand Prix by Microprose (which was a great game!). When VGA became standard the PC both "killed" the ST and the Amiga... .

    • @eightbit1975
      @eightbit1975 Před 2 lety +7

      I had both as a kid. Of course I loved my Amiga 500 to death and the sound and graphics were above what the original ST could do, but the ST was excellent in a lot of areas where the Amiga lacked...at least the A500. The ready to go HDD connector on the machine was excellent...even more-so today with modern microSD devices. You could do that stuff on an Amiga but you need to buy stuff (sidecar addons, etc). The ST had that HDD connector right there. The ability to read DOS disks and the ability to make ST disks from a modern PC easily is a big plus. And, there are some games that are better on the ST in my opinion regardless of graphics and sound...as in better to play. Action Fighter (which is a game I really love) is a lot better on the ST in my opinion. Both machines have their ups and downs....both are worth owning.

    • @cybermodo
      @cybermodo Před 2 lety +1

      @@eightbit1975 , this is good writing. Plus, I must say I am surprised you liked Action Fighter, I also think it was very good looking and pleasant game, and I played it on my C64 - and for unknown reasons to me, magz reviews were lukewarm, it was deemed as mediocre. Personally, it was THE Spyhunter clone for me, and the only version I really played more than usual.
      PS - had no idea ST contained HDD controller inside!? WOW! But SCSI, right? Which means those hdd drives were still quite expensive. Wished I had PC hdd-s to connect directly to my A500 (no IDE), same as I wished to hook PC floppy drive to my C64... but they made it impossible. Sad.

    • @eightbit1975
      @eightbit1975 Před 2 lety +1

      @@cybermodo I think I liked Action Fighter because I played it constantly on the Sega Master System. I am in the USA and the Master System was not as popular as the NES, but in my area many of my friends had one and I did too. After playing and loving that game and finding it was ported to various platforms I made an effort to play them all ;) As for the port on the back of the ST, it is ASCI (Atari Small Computer Interface) similar to SCSI. Today people make HDD simulators that take microSD and plug into that port. Super simple, pretty inexpensive and a great solution!

    The most impressive ST game i ever saw which is NEVER shown in these videos was a true 3D game were you controlled a spaceship flying over a planet. The dynamics of the flight were about 10x faster than any flight simulator game, it really looked like it couldn't be possible to have full real 3D at such fast update frame rate. I don't remember the title but it was mouse or keyboard controlled and the space bar controlled the spaceship thrust. Gravity was extremely realistic and speed was phenomenal. You sometimes had to dog fight an alien ship. The difficulty of the game was to not crash due to gravity.

    Some games missing from this, unless I just missed them. Heroes of the Lance. Licence to kill and Xexon 2. Vroom reminds me of the PS1 as my brother in law bought one and used to go to his house to play. Amiga owners don't understand when they go on about better sound, this games were great fun as they are on the ST, also the graphics were not always better!
    I still have my ST and two Amigas, one is still boxed with the original T-shirt. Relaxing watching this during the plan dem IC.

    Очень нравятся игры на Атари СТ. Напоминают графически игры на Спектруме, но с более качественным изображением, т.к. есть видеорежим цвет на точку. И процессор помощнее. Напоминает именно какой-то навороченный/прокачанный Спек. Такой современный графический адаптер Я хотел бы видеть на нём, для ретро игр очень хорошо, очень классно !!!! Разработчикам игр для Спектрум Некст - делайте игры с графикой как на Атари, а не как на Амиге !!!Не нужно тащить Амигу на Некст !!! Лучше делайте графон и геймплей, как на Атари !!!! Он ближе к Духу Спектрума.

    Dziś kiedy kupujemy komputer to 70% oprogramowania i sprzętu za jaki płacimy ma mas szpiegować i pracować przeciwko właścicielowi komputera. Tamte dawne komputery takie jak Atari i inne były prawdziwymi komputerami osobistymi w 100% działającymi dla swoich fanów.

    I never understood why so few early 1980s games were released for the Atari ST. I remember back when I had an Atari 8-bit, I was considering upgrading to the ST. When I looked at the games available, I realized that I would not be able to play any of my old time favorites. Games like Donkey Kong, Defender, Dig Dug, Robotron, Ms. Pacman, Tempest, etc. were not available. I think that is when I just decided to upgrade to an IBM PC and give up on the gaming PCs.

    the atari ST with the third party support it had would have fared a lot better had it been a console instead of a computer. the company's obsession with beating commodore was its own undoing. commodore didn't see atari as a serious rival. they saw sinclair more as a worthier opponent in the 8-bit home computer race whereas they viewed atari as an organisation that had incompetent leadership in the form of a former employee. if it was me the ST would have had the genesis name for the US or europe, the controller would have been like that of NEC's PC FX and the console itself would have been like that of the neogeo CD's loading tray variant and the storage medium would be either a hard disk or a HU card like the PC engine's but it would be the size of a slice of warburton's bread or a sheet of paper from an A5 notepad. there would be more exclusive games from the likes of namco, snk, williams/midway, taito and a few others.

    If this is the best the Atari ST had to offer then I can fully understand why I always preferred the SNES for my gaming fix back in the day. And the same applies if I consider the SNES vs the Amiga too. Clearly PC gaming just wasn't up to my standards yet back in the day.
