Filling the tub from the ceiling is going to give me design nightmares, now that I leaned about the existence of this horrid feature from you. Also, it looks like the ceiling is leaking and is just plain wrong.
I’ve seen this live at a neighbor’s house! The two sets of owners who’ve lived with it agree it’s weird and awful.
I assume controls for ceiling tub spigot are somewhere near tub. Not obvious from photo. But, proximity of spigot to light fixture looks scary & plasticky window shade behind tub is weird though it may help with over spray. About as luxurious as black rubber gloves. And, yes, cleaning it would probably require a spray bottle & large cups of water ferried from sink. Thanks for the fun think piece

My rule is always: If I have to babysit it, it's not for me. This goes for anything expensive that is high-maintenance and that I would worry about around pets (dogs and cat), kids (don't have my own, but friends and family), or drunk friends. It's either going to be a pretty hassle or an ugly piece of money.
Yes the gray floors omg, thank you!! I honestly loathe them, and its like a flipper fave. It is going to be like linoleum tile or cherry 5 years from now. It just really locks you in to a specific look/ color palette.

My landlord installed these really rustic, ugly, rough-toned, gray, rectangular tiles EVERYWHERE: kitchen, hall, dining room, living room, bathroom. I can't even begin to express how much I hate them now. You could mop them all day and they never look clean. They look like something that might be appropriate in a horse-barn office, a rustic camp, or a sporting goods store bathroom, not an elegant or comfortable suburban home. He went one step further and used regular, unsealed, grout, instead of a dark-gray tinted & sealed grout. As a result, the grout absorbs dirt and the color of the grout varies drastically from out-of-the-way corners (e.g. behind the bathroom door) to main pathways (e.g. the center of the kitchen floor.) Even using a combination wet scrubber-vacuum tool can't get the grout in well-trafficked areas clean. One of the new grout-less tiles in a smooth, uniform, warm-ish mushroom, white oak, or ash tone would have been 1000 times better, more neutral, & flexible for design changes.
I agree on the fake trees. They just never look quite right. Best case, people say, "Wow, it looks so real." Not really a compliment. LOL
Yes to all this. I’ve never heard of a tub that fills from the ceiling. That’s … bizarre.
“30% cheese dust, 70% boogers.” Ha ha! As a parent, I can confirm this. Even if they haven’t had anything cheesy that day. 😒 And the glass stair railings? Yes! I’m a person who has to hold on to that railing. I’ve taken one than one tumble down the stairs. I’m not coming to your house if there’s no railing on your stairs, cuz I’ll think you’re not human and it will creep me out.
I always said that money doesn't buy taste, and your disucssion was a perfect example of the things that are expensive, but really do end up looking cheap! Good job!! BTW.... great shirt :D

I don't know if I'm the only one on this but for me it's two things that at this moment make a home look very cheap- bathrooms that are COVERED completely in white marble with a lot of black/grayish veining in it. I love marble but to me less is always more, I love it just as an accent, covering the entire bathroom in it looks horrible to me. I'm not american and I have no idea how much the cost of it is, but I really don't like it. The other thing is the whole minimalist thing, a lot of homes where I live look as if everybody went to ikea and furnished their place in gray/white/white oak. Love the video as always Garrett

It really makes sense to wait a bit before committing, not just with trends, but in general. If I still like it in a year or two I’m probably going to like it long-term. Which is why I mostly start planning way in advance saving things I like in idea books. I’m usually at least two projects ahead of what we are actually working on at the moment.
I didn't know that a glass stair reeling was a thing. I could live without it quite frankly. And I agree, a safety risk.
Fixing and patching dents in rounded drywall corners is a real pain in the ass too! Also you're so right about the community here, I always love looking at the comments section full of positivity and encouragement 🤗

omg I laughed so hard at the vision of kids leaving residue that's "...30% cheese dust and 70% boogers..." -- so TRUE! I'm glad someone else besides me HATES the idea of glass stair railings/deck railings. I just imagine my clodhopper self tripping, grabbing for support, and then the sound of thumps, crashes, and the end result of decapication!

Filling the tub from the ceiling would have been a dream when my kiddo was a toddler, though. As an accident prone kid, we had one of those fugly, hard to clean plastic animal heads over the faucet.

Well that just goes to show how out of touch I am with fashion trends. I've never heard of baths that fill from the ceiling! My ceilings are high, the water would be cold by the time it reached the bath, not to mention that it would've splashed all over the place. Seems like a crazy idea to me. Another really informative video, thank you Garrett. You always give me something to think about. I'm considering adding wallpaper to my front entryway. I've never had wallpaper in my home and because I've been too scared. I figured an entry way might be a safe place to give it a go and you've just given me some really useful advice about what to choose, so thank you again.

I HATE rounded wall edges. I have them and I loathe them for all the reasons you pointed out. I don’t have any fake olive trees, but I do have a few fake plants. I mixed them in with some real ones so it’s less obvious. I try to buy them at places like PB when they’re on clearance so I get their quality without their regular prices. They also help disguise how often I kill the real plants since there is always something green.
Regarding rainfall shower heads, i like the idea but they don’t work well for me. I have thick hair and rinsing it under a large rainfall shower head is difficult if there isn’t great water pressure. Spreading the water flow across a larger area makes it worse and then I’m having to rinse my hair out in the sink.
My addition to your list is something I learnt about from a plumber. One of his clients wanted a lighted drain in the shower. It was very expensive (to source and install), quite tricky to install and he was telling me about it because he couldn't understand why someone would want something like that (e.g. he thought it was ridiculous, as did I).
What's next, lighted heater and air conditioning vents?
I so agree with everything you say. What are people thinking with glass railings? Especially when they have kids. I’m ok with rounded corners, but I wouldn’t pay extra for it!

I don't have kids but I have dogs. So I would end up with dog nose prints all over it.
This is such a great discussion, Garrett, and as usual, you bring your special blend of expertise, pragmatism, and wit!!! I'm in a Spanish style home and wish I didn't have all the curved corners! I love that you always mention lighting, as it can be like jewelry in our spaces, right? If you can't afford to change the flooring, beautiful lighting won't cost as much and will draw the eyes up! And forget about the glass railings! If you have kids, pets, or people with disabilities in your home, they're a cleaning nightmare and an accident waiting to happen! The Calacata quartz countertops are very subtle in their markings and do not look cheap. If you were fortunate enough to buy a new quartz countertop for your kitchen please enjoy it for years to come. Finances are tight for a lot of us, we were so relieved to get rid of the 20 year old laminate countertops last year.
Totally agree veined quartz countertop are overhyped, it is very popular right now but I am skeptical of how long the popularity will last. I chose the slightly marbled white quartz countertop instead since it is just cheaper and more subtle. Could have gone for the plain white one. I also don't like those marbled tiles, I prefer concrete looking tiles. Tiles should just be tiles, don't try to be marble!
Also I agree that gray floor is not a good look. It looks like wood that is dead. There are many places to use the color gray but the wood floor is not one of them. I love those natural oak color floor, it just warm up the space beautifully.
Things you would never see in the UK: a bath filling from a faucet in the ceiling - crazy idea; microwave over a hob - why would you do this? And installing a corner sink.
Marble is more expensive than quartz in the uk so quartz is more common in kitchens. Interesting how things are different.

I very much appreciate the thoughtful way in which you approach everything in your videos. For example, when you talked about the glass railings you had clearly thought fully about their deficits. I also really like that you think about and share with us how much care and cleaning an item will take as well as that we may be on a budget (so your advice around making furniture investments and ensuring that something like flooring is going to be versatile for years to come). I love that you're never saying "rip that out" and instead you're saying "what can you do now?" You're also sassy and witty when talking about don'ts but never nasty which is really important for those of us who don't know a ton about design and don't have an unlimited budget.

A tub that fills from the ceiling -- wow, that is so, so stupid. It is pointless. (I love your warm, brass lamp!)
In the last house we owned, we had an extremely large, marble-tiled, walk-in shower built. No doors. The bathroom had high ceilings, and with no doors to trap the warm, steamy air it all just flowed out, up, and around in this large bathroom. It was so darn cold when you finished your shower. Especially in the winter months. Real waste of money, and I would never do that again.

For me, personally, though I don't have one, but for me, a waste of money would be a pot filler over the hob. One, I don't cook with tap water at this time. Two, it's an added expense to have plumbing run back there and three, I just don't need a pot filler. I use water from my Berkey and that saves us money, vs spending the money for a pot filler. But again, that's my needs for my kitchen. If someone else enjoys their pot fillers then I will quote you and say, "Love that for them."
Be "unique" and "be you" sounds really fantastic. At the end of the day, appreciating beauty is subjective

My gosh, glass stairwells and water pouring from the ceiling.....some people have too much money to spend!
You were oh so right about using the hardwood floors that had never been exposed in my 1937 home. An inch and a half of the base was covered with carpet, tack strip, and pad. Now it is a pretty 6” base. The before and after is suppressing elegant.

Hilarious that ceiling faucets for tub is an expensive thing. I have that because my walk-in shower had no tub, so I put in a free-standing clawfoot and fill it from the ceiling. I will stop being so humiliated by the kluge if people are doing it on purpose. :-)
What I’m taking away is look at function first, then style. High style is fun to see in a “parade of homes” but not so much to live with.
Agree with these. I still want my glass railing though!! There's a full handrail on the wall side and steel frame for support though.

Years ago I bought a house built in 1910 that had original paper wallpaper. The house was a fixer upper. The wallpaper was so difficult to remove until I was told to use a plant water sprayer, get it wet and use a scraper to remove the wallpaper. It definitely made it easier to remove the wallpaper. After that I don’t use wallpaper. I also used a heat gun to remove painted woodwork, long before the danger of lead based paint being inhaled was well known. I’m not even sure heat guns are used anymore. Many houses caught on fire if heat guns were placed while hot on paper, tarps. Heat guns do make stripping paint off woodwork easier though if you are careful. Loved the episode. Say “hi” to Albert.

Roman Tuscan pillars defining the living room from the dining room in a house with 8 ft ceilings is the worst I've seen recently. Like, what? Fancy interior pillars do not look cool.🤭

Cheap and or Dusty artificial plants! There are some really nice artificial plants out there but they need to be dusted and maintained regularly!

I respect the fact that there are many who are totally anti-gray. But our entire home has a very light gray 'wood' floor with Sherman Williams Lazy Gray walls and we always get compliments about how warm and lovely our home looks. I like the gray throughout each room because it keeps the continuity and then I can decorate with rugs, great art and furniture pieces that can be switched out over time. Plus for some of us, the calmness of the gray is like living in your vacation resort retreat.
I love grey, too, since way before the recent grey fever. Grey colors in a house are forever classic and most relaxing and comfortable colors for me, too 🥰
not having the means to be able to change and buy new trends has saved me from so many design disasters.

You had me at the Wood Segment. Thank you thank you thank you. I have beautiful wood pieces brought over to Canada from Germany. I know they can be veryd outdated (yes) but the one that I own is very elegant and it is sectional and I can mix it up for any room. That being said it is breath taking as one piece. I love it. However the younger members in the family who are into "Fast Furniture and gets rid of theirs everly 5 years (bc its falling apart) thinks my stuff is old and out dated. Far from it darling. I know quality and beauty when I see it and you just so happen to fill all of that. I just found you today and I am so impressedd with your vids. Keep them coming. I have subscribed to your channel. Excellent points, especially about glass banisters, following trends that fade away quickly and wallpaper that doesn't work for the space. This is why working with a designer can be such an important part of decorating a home. Great information you shared with us today.

I love this video Garrett. As you go along explaining the ugly expensive, I specially loved the fountain foyer with the smell of chlorine, lol… Gate the Tuscan murals too. I don’t like that look, ever ! I take my time and think hard before I spend on something expensive that I could be tired or hate it later. Thank you so much my friend. Hello 👋 this is the first time I ever saw the ceiling faucet, I didn’t even know that was a thing and why?? 😂 I also agree with you on the fake plants they are crazy expensive and still fake, there are so many options of real plants that are very low maintenance and beautiful. I see rounded cement corners in homes here in P.R. and it drives me bananas corner beams are not that expensive. Your videos always brighten up my day ☺️

I agree with you on fake veined marble (quartz) countertops. We just finished our remodeled kitchen and had honed imperial danby marble installed as the backsplash and used honed solid warm white quartz for countertops. We love it.

I had never even heard of the ceiling mount tub tap! Wouldn’t the water go cold on the way down? I imagine dangerous misting/splashes all over the floor too- more cleaning! Ghurr! 😝

If you have a tub that fills like that at some point you're going to realize "hey, this is sort of like the ceiling is pissing on me" and then you're going to have to move if you ever want to take a bath again.
Yes yes yes! I have a similar approach with clothes, I don't spend too much in super trendy stuff as will pass quick!
Highly recommend soapstone for those that love veining but are worried about staining!
…so lovely to hear individuals in the design realm to inform on the importance of personal preferences, kudos! Totally agree on wallpaper for it has been abused, overused and misused. I’ve lucked out for when I purchased my great Aunt’s house almost 30 years ago in Atherton, CA it had miles of it but I was able to save the vintage De Gournay Chinoiserie and purchased a few more but had them professionally installed on panels that can be taken down or moved to another area for those suckers were pricey. A little bit of tacky is a plus in my book. And yes to lighting for it can break the whole atmosphere.

You know 1 of the things I absolutely love about you is how you break things down into function and form. I never really thought about sitting in the bath tub and warming the water up only to have it dump on my head ! Lol. A waterfall is nice but not if it drowns you. Trust me I’ve been there done that on vacation. You come out sputtering like a dying fish. I’ll settle for the waterfall shower head I can direct where I want it and the glass railing also was a brilliant point. Thank you!

I agree with you in every single thing you said.. there’s a solution for those gray lovers, add naturally gray material like stone or concrete but not wood and don’t make all your house gray, mix with warm material like natural warm tone wood and warm colors and lighting.
