Oh yeah. That was one last sucker-punch to the feels.
Yvain Gnabro was an animator for overwatch who died in a motorcycle crash at the time that this animation was being created. Knowing that info made the sucker punch to the feels even more emotional.
Bastion is literally a Robot that suffered from PTSD.
Notice how the Woodpecker started to sound like gunfire the more and more we heard it?

I don't know if this was intentional, but;
8:15 - Literal darkness covers Bastion
8:18 - The bird returns, and so does the light
It's almost certainly intentional. If they didn't want that imagery they just would have kept consistent lighting

For those who don't know, the person that this is dedicated to was actually one of the animators who worked on this short. He died in a motorcycle crash
I always thought that his PTSD was supposed to represent his shift from lines of code to consciousnesses. During the war bastion was a cold and precise instrumental of war but after the awakening (the event that caused the omnic uprising) bastion became an imperfect feeling being. Because what’s more human then bing filled with fear and love.
It's 30 years
He was a war machine in the omnic crisis build to destroy humanity. He was probably shut down and abandoned there. I may hate him in the game but I love his character (same with mei you will meet her in rise and shine!) Btw the birds called Ganymede
Actually no. The B4STI0N Units were created by humans to act as Defense and Suppression Units for Law Enforcement and Peacekeeping. That's what the Bastion Skin with the Yellow Lights instead of Blue or Red are. Those are the originals. When the Omnic Crisis broke out, the Omnics hacked the B4STI0N Units and OR13 Units and injected them with a more military protocol controlled by the Omnic Resistance. That's what we see in "The Last Bastion" and "Honor and Glory." Both the Woodpecker and the memories of the fallen B4STI0N Unit triggered the latent Omnic Programming within Bastion. And, yes, this whole thing is a metaphor for PTSD. This is also why Bastion's Core Programming is an AI that cares about life, because the B4STI0N Units were created for peace and not war.

You dont need to watch that first. All shorts stand for their own and tell a different story. Also it is monstly an announcement trailer for the game overwatch.

I love when the action pause where he is between the City and the Forest, it feels like it's not just him getting back to normal but also him making a choice, he could've choice to go get revenge or to let it go. I maybe read too much into this but I like to think that Bastion actually consciously decided to go back to the forest and not just got control back.
Yep, they even frame the shot at 8:34 with him right in the center between the forest and the city, because he's literally at a point of choosing which path to take. Very strong symbolism.
Fun fact: Torbjorn, Brigittes father, finds Bastion and ends up taking care of him.
Wait till you get to Reinhardt's and Mei's animated shorts. Those are the real tear-jerkers.

The bird's name is Ganymede and he is my spirit animal. I start every match of Overwatch by looking at a picture of Ganymede to remind myself who I fight for.

This may be an old video by now but it came up in my feed and it's so genuine and what you said about PTSD hit me hard. I get that and how much it can impact you even years later... Just a lovely reaction. This short made me appreciate Bastion as more than just a killing machine and for it to also be in memory of someone is very special
I don't understand why they don't make a movie
If they ever do (or a Netflix series) I would probably scream. Like their animation is even smoother than Pixar's is. Huge fan of Disney and Pixar but wow, Blizzard Entertainment knows good animation. I bet a movie will probably come in the next few years or so. Maybe they are already working on it!
@@AllAgesofGeek Since the first short came out everyone wanted a movie or at least like you said a Netflix series so I think they have to do one that would not just be good for us because they would get a lot of money out of it so its like the smartest think to do but the only thing we can do is hope that it comes out as soon as possible. Blizzard has a small team of experts who animates all their shorts by hand (There's no motion or facial capture at all) so it's very time consuming, making a move would require different techniques to be viable and that means it wouldn't be anything like these shorts.
You can sort of see what happens when you try to make movies out of Blizzard animation in the Warcraft movie.

Yea I think there could be a debate on which short is more emotional...'Rise and Shine' or 'Honor and Glory'. Personally its 'Rise and Shine' for me, and if I had to put money on it, I think it's going to be 'Rise and Shine' for Kat too.

Honor and Glory is just badass on all level. Like the amount of badassary in honor and glory is unparalleled. Blizzard went all out with that one.
IIRC Bastion walked six HUNDRED kilometers through the Black Forest from start to finish, with his journey ending just outside of Stuttgart. Assuming an average speed of 4-5km/h walking almost nonstop, that means it would have easily taken him well over a week. That gave him more than enough time to become sentient as well as develop a PTSD of sorts from the memories he absorbed. His initial reaction to his programming taking over leads to feelings of shame and regret which the animation is able to show so beautifully.
They released a new short yesterday called "Reunion"

Honestly the fact its in memory of someone and done without any word being spoken is powerful. I love all OW cinematics, but this one is one of my favorites.
Love how technically bastion was a bad guy who just awoken after ‘his’ lost war.
They put quite a bit of thought into their writing for the overwatch cast. Which is why i enjoy the shorts as much as i do. Bastion is a type of robot built to serve humans and keep the peace. At the onset of the omnic war the god AI's overrode everything they could and that included most of the bastions. They also took over the Omniums (factories that mass produced omnics/bastions/weapons) which gave them a pretty big supply of disposable bastions to use on top of all the ones they took over and further on top of the new machines they were building.
Story wise bastion represents fear and hope. Fear because he is literally the face of the enemy from a war that almost destroyed mankind. Hope because even though he was reprogrammed, without the god ai's influence he has no interest in that cause. Him destroying the forest was him responding to a perceived threat. Theres a comic where torbjorn hunts him down, recognizes hes different and helps him presumably by removing the god ai stuff from him and fixing his armor.
I love the reaction and the fact that you understand his past so well it's amazing and it's in memory of someone made it so much more deeper. Thank you for the great video and reaction.

Sometimes all the characters can be OP when you let them be like junkrat or roadhog.. mai honzo and that mercy with always resurrecting your kills on the enemy team. 😑😣😠 curse you medics on enemy teams. especially on the competitive elimination games when it's only you against the whole enemy team.

It’s amazing how they portrayed PTSD with a robot. And showed his inherent goodness fighting and struggling with his programming and ptsd.
Then all the symbolism. With the bird, not only representing free win and freedom but also his good side and reminding him to live in the present. And when that bird comes back putting him literally in the middle of the screen in the middle of the forest and the city, torn between 2 options, the conflict in his mind etc.
Before finally showing him walking away from the city and picking the forest, choosing freedom and goodness. What an amazing way to humanize a robot…

This is my favorite of the Overwatch shorts. I'm a sucker for nonverbal storytelling, and this made Bastion my favorite Overwatch hero

I know I am late, but what I really love about this trailer, is when the bird comes back it shows that the bird forgives the robot. Its like ok it happened but I am at your side now lets keep on together. Thats what my heart melted away.

Bastion (BES-tyun): Originally a protruding section on a city or fortress wall to provide a firing platform allowing defenders to hit enemies attacking the walls. - Now used often used for figurative bulwarks against something. In Overwatch it was also the common name given to the main frontline troops used by the Omnics (robots) during the Omnic Crisis (think an apocalyptic AI uprising).
The omnic crisis was some 20 years prior to Overwatch' present, and stopping it was basically the reason Overwatch as an organization was originally formed.
Soo talking about wartime ptsd and how intense it can get.
When my cousin first came back from Afghanistan. He'd swerve around the dark patches of pavement from where potholes are filled, empty boxes and bags on the road freak him out because in his eyes, there could be bombs in those... and the worst one was the A.C vent in his room, one of the blades was loose and would rattle as the air runs. The sound of the metal clanking and scraping against itself would startle him awake often yelling about machinegun fire.
Bastion has that combat mode built into him, he freaked out because he thought the woodpecker hits were gunshots. He basically has robot PTSD...

This has been my favorite OW cinematic since it was released, it's so beautiful and emotional with not a single word being spoken, Blizzard knock it out of the park. I think the unsung hero of this cinematic is the music, god it just strikes you in your soul lol.
Blizzard knows how to get you right in the feels, Honor and Glory hits me the hardest everytime I watch it.

When Ganymede returns with the tiny twig, it is like he is saying "We can rebuild" ;_;
if you didn't understand it, the woodpecker did a sound really close to a shot sound. He is a battle robot so if he hears shots he is probably going to shot everywhere if he doesn't see the threat
Amazing it's like the robot has PTSD or has a "history of violence" like situation
Metaphorically the stick symbolizes new beginnings. And the shadow cast over Bastion before Ganymede flies to him shows the dark past that can be left behind

By the way, are you gonna do any reactions to any of the Origin Story videos, too? They're significantly shorter than the Animated Shorts (most are only around 2 minutes), so I'd imagine you could probably even do 2 or 3 per video? That's up to you, though, obviously. Cheers!
