I highly recommend sE Electronics. I have around 10 sE mics at the moment and I will not stop collecting them any time soon. Would love to check out the BL8. Great stuff!

Sir, I do say… please do a shootout video with the 3 boundary mics.

If I had access to all three, that certainly would be great.

Would have liked to hear the BL8 outside the bass drum. Many of my gigs are recording jazz drums with a sealed kick. I've used boundary mics going back to the original Ken Wahrenbrock PZM [pre Crown] mics in studio with mixed success. I like the versatility of the EQ switching on the BL8 and does make it a serious, one mic, kick solution. In any recording situation their are always N mic channels available and N+1 microphone channels needed.
One experiment I'd like to try is a boundary mic UNDER the snare, I've used a small omni condenser under the snare to pick up a sealed kick, [phase inverted of course] with good results on recording and FOH. Haven't had a boundary mic to try on the last few live gigs to try it. Might be good to help with the snare snap while giving some isolation. I typically use an M/S overhead, a snare/hat condenser mic and an under snare omni condenser aimed at the beater for a live jazz kit.

I haven't experimented with a boundary mic outside the kick because of isolation, but that's and interesting thought to try. Maybe I'll give that a go!

@@malonedrum Not getting as much time in the studio of late. Since you have a controlled acoustic environment, I'd love to hear the result of the above mentioned experiment.
I typically use a modified 4 point drum mic setup for jazz drums, a Shure VP 88 overhead in M/S mode using only the M output for the FOH, I use the full M/S to spread the drums in the mix. I have been using a Karma Silver Bullet on top and bottom snare, the bottom mic is aimed at the kick beater and is phase inverted. I typically like to mic the beater head phase inverted for a closed kick. The last part is a very old technique that has fallen out of favor with ported heads but in a live situation micing a closed front head is too muddy to cut the FOH mix and has too much stage wash for recording purposes.
BTW: I wasn't hearing much of a difference on calibrated headphones with the sub kick over the single BL8.
I would really like to hear the result of an under snare test of the BL 8, even better if you could supply some tracks of the result with the various EQ possibilities.

Do you have a link for the kick drum muffler shown around 0:46? I have the Sennheiser mic similar to this one and need a way to suspend it, also considering the Kelly SHU made for these types of mic's. Thanks for any thoughts that you may have.

    7/8 + 9/8 😳
The V Kick is very nice. Can I ask where you hi-pass to with your overhead?

It's right around 100 hz for this one (I checked, and its more specifically 94)

And while that boundary is a fine and handy mic, the V Kick has great low end that would sway me towards it. Thanks Mike 👍

Thanks for the video man! How do you think this compares to the Behringer ba 19a? Since you reviewed that. one before it would be nice to hear your thoughts. :)

I think they are both great. I prefer the sE, but the price difference is definitely something I’d consider and weigh into it my decision for which one id buy.
