OB-Xd is truly amazing! I did an Axel F remake with lead and bass synths created in OB-Xd. Just posted as a first video on my channel
Hell yeah! This is my absolute favorite VST synth can't wait to update.
Thank you! This need to be downloaded! ❤
Great update and great video. Since I discovered this synth through your channel last week it's become an absolute favourite.
It sounds so insanely good and it's free. Honestly incredible.
Any other favorite softsynths you'd like me to check out?
The only reason I wasn’t using this synth on EVERY track was it’s lack of the lfo syncing to my daw tempo. Never understood how such an amazing plugin was lacking that! But now… OBXD here I come!
I'm glad they updated it for the same reason! Any other favorite plugins?
Thanks for the tip I like to keep it up to date. LOVE this synth especially the J3po presets.
Those J-3PO presets are worth the price alone!
Such a glorious synth. I've been using it for years, and this update really seems great.
Really unbeatable
I was using an older version of this a long time ago and absolutely loved it. Even though I'm mostly rocking a DAWless setup I'll have to check out this new version & maybe do some sampling.
It's worth checking out at least to poke around for a bit and see if anything interesting comes out
I love this synth. Hearing there is an update just made my day.
Such a great synth regardless of price.
Well done. I'd like to add that OB-ENV-PWM has not started with the Xpander but OB8. In Page-2 mode there are 2x delay/atk parameters & inverts in the mod section. In retrigger mode slow LFOs can act as ENVs with those small ENV controls. Trig point is freely adjustable to attain a decent modulation.
Ahhhh that makes sense! The dreaded Page 2
Great video, man. And now....I must download the latest version! The preset bar and menu updates are more than worth the upgrade.
it's now the 3.1 version that is on the website -- it's a demo and works only in vst2 mode.... if you want it to work in vst3 mode you'll have to buy a licence.
Yes VST3 is not supported.
Full Bucket's Deputy is real classic synthesis.
Haven't heard of that one!
Thank you for the demonstration. Stay safe.
🙏
Bro you're killing it. Fantastic video on one of the best softsynths ever made!
Thank you so much Synth Senpai!
@@VultureCulture 😁👊🏻
Loved this. Thanks bro!
You're very welcome! 🙏
Tested it yesturday , solid update !!! i like also the refinemen,t in browser , the log in curves i love using it on their Discovery pro , specially for the release witch is not implemented here ...
Superb video as usual ...
Thank you so much Zozilla. Any other softsynth's you think I should check out?
I was about to do one on Discovery pro , it's pad heaven .... Gforce obx you already did one (i've found the gforce dirty and vintage and the disco dsp snappier and more hifi ) (one that a lot will want to see is a versus , not to see witch sounds the best , but more for the sonic diff ... Gforce OBX versus Disco OBXD)
I was thinking about updating my v collection , so i decided to test last releases , the the jupiter was good , as well as the CS 80 BUT the one that supriosed me even if the filter scream isn't 100 % like the og is the MS 20
I do think an episode about it could be great because it's such a beauty (i can reach those territories with my XD scary close , but still the og was something) and the arturia one gives you Polyphonie option : i know you will kill it lol For me arturia are not 100 % accurate but the do react like §HW and are eazy to make good sound in while some other brands are more accuarte but the sweat spot is really narrow. (and versus the og if you still have that , i saw you made a versus roland sh2 )
As for hardware my last founding and actual chok is the Multimoog , man if you can find one to review , it's something !!
I made a rerview on this one , but if you can check the Xlis PolyKB , pretty sure you'll love it , it responds really like HW imho @@VultureCulture
As for drum machine , i'm cheking the syntakt (elektron) and i would love your take on it , the kawai R50 video you made was epic , i know you will put it to stress lol
I've had the older version to have a quick tool for temp synth tracks to replace later.... but finding it sounds so good I often don't replace the track.
It really does sound good! Any other plugins you use to demo tracks?
@@VultureCulture So far, just that.
Hey thanks for this sounds glorious! With this and the VK-1 you have a lot of ground covered for free.
Such a golden age we live in.
@@VultureCulture czcams.com/play/PLBfbaQ1cxXTFo1tctaR4JCruiP0P2RnM-.html&si=Zsww2tW9f2LjJgMi
this vst is very well done , thanks a lot
Glad you're enjoying it 🙏🙏
Whoa - the Synth midi integration looks like a Huge bonus (!) Been using OB-xd for years but this refreshes my perspective.
Look forward to pairing with my microkorg.
I notice the Novation circuit on the list.
I guess I’ll see if the cc controls also map to the Circuit Tracks
Such a great feature!
hey Vu;ture Culture I know I've said this before but your vid on the free Uhe synth Tyrell vs the prologue gave me a great appreciation of great software programming which I didn't think possible. Thanks for your channel. i look forward to watching this.
Thanks man! I really appreciate that!
What do you think of OB-Xd?
@@VultureCulture honestly, I haven't downloaded yet. There are so many great softsynths to explore and I haven't had time. I have gforce's SEM, which I love but def will check this out when I have some time.
I ended up donating and got some extra patches which are really sweet. I'll look into upgrading
The JX-3P patches are incredible!
Wish they'd add a better preset menu.. Like a simple display of the preset and buttons for next and previous.
I really like OBXd. Its not 100% but who cares? It sounds nice and its a good entry into synths. I say all of this as an owner of an OBXa.
Totally agree. It's great sounding if not perfectly authentic.
Hearing this from an owner of a OBXa? I'll check it out now😁
Awesome video bro! Hands down one of the best ob synths there is!!
Crazy that it sounds so good even though it's free. Any other softsynths you think I should check out?
TAL U-NO and DEXED are great as well. Guess you already have them.
Love the OB sounds... takes med straight back to the 80s... What Beyerdynamics headphone/mic-set is that? I like the sound. I've always used Beyerdynamics headphones but not any models whit microphone.. thanx, great video!
DT-990 with a mod mic added on
Great video thanks, sound pretty good for a VST especially for free.
Absolutely!
Sounds lovely!
It's really gorgeous sounding!
👍 On the inverted envelope comments. That was my favorite feature on the Roland JX-3P. It's kind of a secret sauce feature.
I use em on the Polysix too!
He made the filter face again!!! “Oowwwww”
It's so hard not to!!
Great breakdown thanks so much btw new sub here.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙏
Very cool I just downloaded it. I have the original as well.
Great video
Thank you
You're welcome!
Great news! Thank you! It is what it is.
Such an incredible synthesizer!
Great video. Be sure to check your levels though.. I heard some occasional clipping!
Thank you!
Free version includes fully functional Standalone app, Audio Unit and VST plug-ins. Registered version delivers both 2.x and 3.x commercial rights1, AAX, VST3, and LV2 plug-ins and technical support to help you get the most out of the software.
No. This is no longer true, even VST2 now cannot be used for commercial work.
I made a bass sound on this that was identical to a Moog slim phatty i used to own.
OB-Xd really can sound awesome and analog!
I really like 2/3 keyscaling… imo it’s a really good ratio
I should use it more often!
Thx for review
You're welcome 🙏 Any other synths you'd like me to review in the future?
@@VultureCulture being a synth lover too, I think it would be great to do some videos on how to create specific patches on synths that everyone could recreate. Ie sfx of JM Jarre, 80’s , vangelis, … Also a more in depth guide on creating sounds with the SY99 would be awesome 🤩 . Thx again for the great content
@bennethos glad you're enjoying! And that's a great idea 💡
From developer site: "Special Upgrade Offer: Customers who purchased OB-Xd 2.14 after November 1st receive a free license update to 3.0. Others can upgrade for just $9.99 in the Members Area" so it's FREE?
It is free but you can still purchase it if you want, like I said in the video.
@@VultureCulture Free version includes fully functional Standalone app, Audio Unit and VST plug-ins. Registered version delivers both 2.x and 3.x commercial rights1, AAX, VST3, and LV2 plug-ins and technical support to help you get the most out of the software.......this vst is for non commercial use....so its not free...its for personal use.. you cannot use the plug in in your tracks and sell the tracks....if you purchase it you get the right to use it in your tracks and sell them.....That is what i understand out of it....and its been like this for years..
Great video, happy new-ish subscriber. What an amazing free synth! Question about the MIDI mapping, it's cool how you can midi map the preset bank you're in, is it possible to also map moving forward/on to the next preset/patch? Not sure if that's even possible with any VST instrument but thought I'd check!
Just tried it out and it works!
@@VultureCulture that's awesome! Definitely going to download this and set up it then.
I wish I could favorite patches
That would be a good feature!
holy shit this sounds really great
Doesn't it though? All time best free plugin for analog synthesis.
they made it a self oscillating CS70M Oberheim
Yasssss
It must have been free for a short time only, it now has a $49 price tag … still very reasonable
Ah ok @@AutPen38 Since my DAW of choice is Logic Pro I must use the AU plugin. I'm always happy to pay for good-quality instruments. Thanks, however, for taking the time to reply and sharing the 'free' download method
@@AutPen38 No. VST2 now is under the same constraints as the other plugin formats.
@@mabian69 Strange. I'm glad I got in early and got the free version. I might end up buying a licence though, as it's one of my favourite synths.
I love this synth and used it seems like forever. I updated to the latest and suddenly custom presets won't save in the DAW set. Or stay in place at all when the Live Set or device is loaded after closing. Can't tell if it's a bug or intentional. So I sent back a version until it's sorted.
That's interesting / weird! Please let DiscoDSP know!
I hope the new iPad Version comes soon
Anyone know if they’re planning on updating the ipad version? that would be way more useful for me right now I’m finding it hard to sit down at my desk, I’ve been using the ipad more and more
I'm not aware that there will be one unfortunately
how does this compare to the arturia one?
I haven't done a shootout between the two. I think the Arturia version is based off the OB-Xa which has a different sound.
How do we assign knobs from our controller ? Thanks
I use Reaper, it's as simple as right clicking and selecting Midi Learn. Most DAW's have a midi learn function.
Is there finally a trigger button for the LFO as well? It’s so annoying when you’re trying to make wobble basses but the LFO always goes out of time with the MIDI.
When it's in sync with your daw it always starts the same!
@@VultureCulture awesome. I’ll test it out.
@jordanrattanavong2655 let me know if it works for you. It might be something DiscoDSP can address in an update
It does work but even when you press the sync button it does not display the LFO rate. Most soft synths will display 1/4, 1/8, etc. This update does not which is very odd. @@VultureCulture
@jordanrattanavong2655 yeah that is strange. You just sort of have to figure it out by ear. Have you turned the tips on? They might show it. I'd check it out but I'm not home right now.
Is this going go be for iOS too ???
I don't believe so but DiscoDSP is always coming out with new stuff.
Is there anyway for the OBXd to remeber or save the midi learn? My daw records the automation but its irrelavent because when I reload the song, theOBXd doesnt remember the midi assignment so the knob that was assigned isnt matching up to the correct knob e.g. cutoff filter, etc. Any suggestions? Thx
I think that's something you'd want to do in your DAW, not your plugins. I know in REAPER you can save midi learn in a track template.
@@VultureCulture ya, it’s not going to work unfortunately. Maybe there is a midi implementation chart for the Obxd so that I can just record the motion then switch out the correct cc# in the sequencer. It worked for the filter using this method. But that’s because I guessed it was most likely cc #74 🙂
@GrootsieTheDog there's a lot of midi profiles in there, I'm not home but I'd check that part of the menu out and see if there's a save function in there
@@VultureCulture I’ll check it out. Thanks.
So..unlike most VSTs (and more like hardware), you basically have to set up the controller to match the instrument (i founf the midi implementauion in the manual). I was confused mostly because ive become so used to most VSTs doing it the other way - the vst maping to the controller and being saved in the patch.(for ex. Cherry Audio synths have the choice to global midi map or per patch, minifreak V can save multiple midi prsets, etc). Would be a nice uupdate imo to save those learned mappings in the patch.
Sounds great, but when I go to the site it mentions upgrade prices and a full price of $49. I not understand :)
Ah, finally got to the end of the video. Now I understand the difference between the versions offered. Shame oversampling is excluded, but I guess there's nothing wrong with buying the, admittedly cheap licence, when all the dollar bills start rollin' in ;)
Cheers!
Yeah - it wasn't obvious to me that you can just hit download and it's free lol
@@VultureCulture :)
hey I need help so I downloaded it and once it’s loaded in my saw I can’t get any sound out of it? But all my other vst synth works fine
Make sure the volume knobs are all up?
the discodsp page does not open. Does anyone know an alternative download location?
www.discodsp.com/obxd/
Worked for me?
Hope they add effects for the next update. It's a great plugin but needs reverb/delay.
That they did not add 😓
Would pay A LOT if it came with effects🤑
Is this plugin still free? On the website it says it says "Buy Now" and it costs 59 Euro.
You can just download it without paying the $59
I don't see much of a donate button there, but I do see a "buy" button on that page. Also the sound seems kinda...uhm...off. Not sure I would call it the greatest free analog synth, but hey, opinions and all that.
Maybe the sounds not for you - totally get that.
There is a buy button but you don't have to. I misremembered it as a donate button when I recorded the video.
@@VultureCulture Yeah I totally understand that. It happens. The thing is, there's crackling noise in the video seemingly with some settings you used, like bad harmonics. Now I dunno if that is what that oberheim physically sounds like...but...it's not nice, and I don't have those issues recording even with holding a smartphone in my hand moving it around and playing it through shitty speakers...so that was peculiar.
@Frikoppie weird! I'd say download it for free (vst2) and give it a shot and see if you hear the same issues. Sometimes CZcams compression can be weird
@@VultureCulture Nah it's okay, I recently quit music and such.
now u need to pay for comercialization :(
will stick to version 2 instead of 3
Version 3 upgrade completely screwed up my projects in Logic Pro. I deleted it and reinstalled the prior version. Wow. What a disappointment.
Really? It's a separate plugin for that very reason. What happened exactly? Please report it to DiscoDSP
is this open source?
No
@@VultureCulture how come theres an open source repo from two years ago?
@henrygrant9650 the original OB-Xd was open sourced and then licensed to DiscoDSP to further improve.
@@VultureCulture ahhh, but why make it free?
@henrygrant9650 I'm assuming to promote DiscoDSP's other synths
It has all the features of the original synth but no the sound.
I don't have an OB-X to compare, but I think it sounds close to GForce's software, which I think probably is close lol
I discovered the paid version(I'm assuming there's more presets...but no included FX?) It's normally $99 & currently on sale for $59...but I don't see the benefit of paying for it. As a free version, the GUI is tolerable...but as a paid version, the GUI is unacceptable. I would much rather purchase Arturia's OP-XA V(currently on sale for $74)...as it has a MUCH superior GUI & included FX.
Why so much ugly distortion on your demo here? Is that built in to the plugin?
It's definitely got a raw sound. Could be CZcams compression as well
YES OBX-d 3.0 REALLY IS FREE - simply go to the download link on this page (you don't have to pay!!!!): www.discodsp.com/obxd/
The VST2 version is, but the VST3 version isn't unless you bought it recently.
From the link you posted:
£39 unless you purchased previously....Special Upgrade Offer: Customers who purchased OB-Xd 2.14 after November 1st receive a free license update to 3.0. Others can upgrade for just $9.99 in the Members Area.
So Cubase users, or any other DAW that now only allows VST3 plugins to run, cannot get this plugin for free.
@StevoLloyds you didn't even bother to download it - it is absolutely free for VST3 please go check for yourself.
What you copied and pasted applies for the PAID version only which includes extra presets, support and oversampling like I said in this video.
@@VultureCulture I did download it, using the link that you provided. It makes no sound and a message pops up, on loading, saying that the non commercial version is only fully available in a VST2 version, please purchase a license to obtain the VST3 version.
Really? I'll reach out to DiscoDSP about that
@@VultureCulture you should but it won't change the reality. This synth is NOT Free for commercial usage, not even the VST2, this was in the past and it's no longer. It's free only for personal use. Full stop.
It doesnt work for me
What's not working?
I can open up the vst in fl studio, but when I try playing some notes, Theres no sound.@@VultureCulture
I thought it was 50 dollars now?
It's free! Just skip the optional donation and download!
It doesn't at all sound like an OB-Xa. It doesn't even resemble one. But as a generic soft synth, it is pretty sweet. And for free, are you kidding?
It's more of an OB-X clone than OB-Xa, which has a different, and honestly less classic Oberheim sound.
it is free????
Yes!
@@VultureCulture strange the link says BUY IT
@bluematrix5001 you literally don't have to
@@VultureCulture thank u
Nice sinth, but I've downloaded the demo version of the new OPX-PRO3 and IS ASTONISHING: way better than this and Gforce
Who makes that?
@@VultureCulture "sonica projects" (?) The third version is the best oberheim emulation: there's a more than one hour YT demo tutorial
Too bad it's no longer open source.
It is still free - I never knew it was open-source at some point.
@@VultureCulture I hope you bought a license, because if your channel is monetized you are making illegal "commercial" content that requires (according to them) a license.
OBX-d was originally developed by 2Dat. discoDSP has claimed that they retroactively got full rights to un-opensource the code-base (including user-contributed content). Without ever giving a single piece of evidence. It's a very far stretch to retroactively close a long-time standing opensource project though ..
In the words of 2Dat: "As long as this project is GPL ,you can freely use the sources without even asking me :)"
@_DRMR_ I'd actually love to chat with 2Dat one day about the topic - it would be illuminating. In the meantime, yes I have a license.
Free? It's $49.
You don't have to purchase it, you can just download it.
Sounds like crap next to hardware....instead of buying 5 vsts for a specific sound get yourself a good hardware synth and be happy....all those vst companies just change faceplates 🤣
Your voice is too loud on these videos! Why do you have to drown out the synths to where we can't hear hear them without your thundering voice? I'm losing friends because of you.
Stop making faces, it doesn't sound that good.
Cherry Audio has released a SEM by Oberheim for free yesterday and it sound amazing! I still prefer Arturias OP-Xa synth but not bad for free...
I think I'm going to check it out on a livestream on Wednesday 🤘
Have you tried BX Oberhausen for comparison? It's my only OB, but it sounds amazing. Just as good as softubes Prophet. I rate them better than U-HEs Prophet and Diva, though they sound great too.
Does Arturia sound more authentic?
@johanh9637 I haven't and need to!
@Miicrowahvei I haven't done a head to head comparison but it sounds pretty damn close to GForce which is the only officially endorsed software Oberheim
But does it Com Truise?
Pretty man close
Your mic sounds awful, dude. Just sayin'. Far too bassy, too many plosives. Please switch it up to something more standard. Sounds like many parts of the video are clipping too, and otherwise overly limited.
@periurban Here you go. Is this better? It's BLACK. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
