So pleased you finished A Man Called Ove. Couple of years ago I read Britt-Marie Was Here. Finished it in two days, went back to the library and quickly worked my way through the Backman back catalogue. A Man Called Ove spoke to me just like Britt-Marie, and My Grandmother... is pure modern, urban magical realism. You should definitely read Beartown. I just know it will infuriate and move you.
A Man named Ove. The original Swedish (I think) movie is much better than the one just came out. This was a book I LOVED! I also liked his book My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She’s Sorry.

Ugg, I was holding my breath, hoping you'd love Ove. So glad you did. My other favorite of Fredrik Backman is, 'My grandmother asked me to tell you she sorry'. I've read a few of his and I think why I like his books so much, is the personalities he gives to his characters. You become friends (or enemies) with them also. Another wonderful read is 'The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper' by Phaedra Patrick. It's another old guy, trying to make it in the world without his beloved wife. His wife had a mysterious life before him that he seeks out by way of a charm bracelet. Those are a few of my favorites but it looks like I need to buy, 'Crying in H Mart', now. Thanks for the good recommendations.
A Man called Ove, was my husband's favorite read. He could not stop talking about it! I do believe Tom Hanks starred in a movie based on the book. They changed the title a bit. Thank you Jess, I do enjoy your channel and being real to your feelings and the books you read. 😊

I love coming of age stories! It's so interesting, touching, funny, grievous, and oh-so many other emotions that carry you through how a person became who they are. I love that! And I have this to say now that you've read one...now you're hooked.
They made this book into a movie, Tom Hanks stared in it. They changed the name to A Man Called Otto.

The movie with Tom Hanks is a copy of the original Swedish movie and the Swedish version is much better.
I took a history through fiction course in college and was forced to read the "Greats" of American fiction. 1700's and 1800's books were a bit rough, but the 1900's had some truly great works. My only complaint about the class was the lack of science fiction and fantasy. Luckily, the professor did teach a class on the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Of course, the Narnia series was not covered.

Sometimes I go to a 1/2 price book store. They have some really good choices so many times.

You need to read “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She is Sorry” , by Frederick Backman. I would love to hear what you think of it. I have tried several times and I can’t finish it. But my friend loves it and has re-read it several times.

One of my favorite authors 'Amy Tan' writes the most incredible stories, for example "The Joy Luck Club", it's so rich and breathtaking, was made into a fantastic movie by China's Stephen Spielberg, Wayne Wang, hope you check her books out. Love books about people and their journeys, they never get old. Great to see you are trying new genres Jess. You are looking so well, hope it's a reflection of how you really are feeling. When Breath Becomes Air- Paul Kalanithi and A House in the Sky- Amanda Lindhout are two other awesome memoirs. American Dirt- Jeanine Cummins and The Four Winds Kristin Hannah are my two favourite books
I read A Man Called Ove last year, thanks to the audiobook I learned Ove is pronounced Uva (Oova). While I didn't love the book, I thought it was pretty good. I definitely need to pick up Crying in H-Mart. It's great to read books from different genres.
I am in the process of reading Crying in H Mart!! It is so loaded, it's a bite at a time kind of book. I am loving it though, it is so very good.

You could try a cozy mystery series titled the Hannah Swensen Mysteries. The first book is The Chocolate Chip Cookie Mystery. A reader gets a great read plus a few new recipes to try out.👍 I have tried several of the recipes from various bks & love the simplicity of the recipes.💯

I loved A Man Called Ove! I also suggest The Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared, A Walk In The Woods(actually anything by Bill Bryson), and The Titanic Sisters. Also, give all of Mitch Albom's books a try(they're a quick read). I'm bed-bound so I do a lot of reading. If you're interested in adult coloring books, let me know. I've learned a bit about colored pencils as well and would be happy to share some info with you to save you some $. Oh yeah, grab some Tracy Chevalier books as well.🙏🌎☮🐾👣🌱🎶🎨❣
A classic story I recommend is “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (of course if you haven’t read it already 😉) 📚
Jess, if you liked Crying in HMart which I also loved, you need to read Know My Name by Chanel Miller (also. Memoir). It is a great book and I think you would like it.
Loved Crying in H-Mart. Everyone I know that has read it loves it. I have a recommendation for you: The World that We Knew by Alice Hoffman. It's about young Jewish girls trying to stay safe during the Second World war. There is also magic/other worldly (don't know what to call it) side to it. I don't want to spoil it but I could not put it down.
Fredrick Backman books are so good. I hope you will try some of his other novels.
All those books sound great. I would never read Crying In H Mart because I don't like emotional books and seeing you cry over it, I knew it would be a sad book.
I'm so happy you got bored with the romance genre. lol. You gotta read the Riley Sager books - OMG "Lock Every Door" is the best one. Don't read "House Across the Lake" - it is shockingly awful. The rest of them are very good. Ruth Ware and Norma McFadden are great, too for the quick thrill reads. "Quarry Girls" by Jess Lourey was another good one. One of the best books I've read since "Life of Pi" (all time greatest along with "To Kill a Mockingbird") is "Tomorrow, Tomorrow & Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin. I hope to see you in your book club soon!
My friend read A Man Called Ove and loved it couldn’t wait to see the movie. I watched the movie which is called A man called Otto I believe. Stars Tom Hanks and everyone knows anything he is in is worth watching lol having seen the movie I could see how the book would seem slow starting out especially for a younger reader. You and your mom should watch the movie ❤😊

If you’re looking for something different and good, read “Saving CeeCee Honeycutt” by Beth Hoffman. Is probably my favorite book that I never would have picked EXCEPT I met her at the hospital I worked at. I only read it because of that. It was a great book and was glad I went in a different direction than my usual Rom-Com. Hope you read it. I’d love to hear your take on It.

Another memoir you might enjoy: The Periodic Table by Primo Levi.
Your mom read that first one. She commented about how it made her feel like she had just gone through some the things while you were sick last year.

I've been reading books from Shayne Silvers. Brilliant author. 👏
I'd like to recommend a couple of authors I love & will actually re-read. Patricia Finney, who also writes under the pseudonym P.F.Chisholm; she writes incredibly engagingly about a "bad" boy in Elizabethan England, Sir Robert Carey who solves mysteries. The other author is Kate Atkinson whose novels overlap, at least a whole series with private detective Jackson Brodie did. There's also 2 seasons of a British series based on her books called "Case Histories" & the actor playing Brodie actually matched my mental image of him. .

Try historic fiction? Margaret George is one of my favorites. I've read all of her books.
Combine your genres and read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It is romantic/historical/fiction. There are like nine books so you get very attached to the characters. I am rereading it (audible) it is that good.
Check out From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home by Tembi Locke if you haven't already read it. It is 305 pages and has a bunch of recipes at the end fron each section of the book. It was a pretty good read.
So I tried to read outside my book genre and I just couldn’t get through it. On the other hand I have started going to the Library. One step at a time.

There are so many great reads out there, but more recently, books have lower standards for publishing. Quality has suffered. Try your library and older books.
Has anyone read the book The Boy called "IT" it's about child abuse OMGoodness it's so sad how a Mom could be so mean and cruel to her child. I am sure it's happened in the
world today. It's hard raising kids but I would never do to a child what she did. I will see about reading "The Man Called Ove"
