Remember this one , division four have Pompey a chance to get back to winning after the usual boom and bust mismanagement. Nice to see Fratton park with Duggie Reid's pitch - always immaculate . We went up the year after this and it's nice to see Steve Foster and co . Peter Mellor the goalkeeper was a great character .Grimsby deserved it on the day , proper football.

Nice to see Dean Crombie in action. I remember he was in my year at Lincoln College of Art a couple of years earlier. I believe he was on Lincoln City's books at the time.

brilliant stuff, my era when i was a lad, how much better was the game back then? hardly any stoppages, players got stuck in , no play acting which ruins the modern game, pretty much everything was better about football in the 70's, great strips, no awful advertising on the kit and a brilliant barry davies commentary, superb stuff

I was there, the pitch was actually in very good condition for Febuary. No Colin Garwood for Pompey that day, he was a phenomenal striker.

Love this era in football, muddy pitches, hard tackling and cold tea at halftime.....there was a charm and a feel of down to earth , working class realism to matches in these times ....until money and foreign investors tore down the old traditions and heritage of clubs , for the quest of money....the game may have more money in it ....but it's ruined

Portsmouth v Grimsby Town - 24th February 1979 MOTD Highlights 1114am 19.3.23 the good old days of punditry was at it's zentih, here... one presenter showcasing a few games, a bit of a chat with a guest - if lucky - and the emphasis on the football. that's how they should do it - even now. all managers watching - do yer punditry when yerv retired or when in between jobs - as it ruins yer careers or team's focus on winning... but, yeah, it aint nostalgia talking - its all about the sport. p.s even now grimsby have a ground which ranks above their particular nowadays station.

2 things struck me here. 1) Pompey playing in a proper shade of royal blue rather than the American sports brand rubbishy shade of now. 2) The Chimes being sung more slowly and therefore with far more emphasis, intent and emotion. Arguably sung at the proper tempo back then, rather than the "everything must be very hurried" of nowadays.
Bring back the proper shirt colour and sing the Chimes less quickly.
And give us a team to be really proud of once again.

Curiously, Portsmouth would lose 2-0 at bottom club Halifax Town seven days later in what was Town's first home game for three months, and only their third win of the season.

Portsmouth v Grimsby Town - 24th February 1979 MOTD Highlights 19.3.23 1130am around 15mins 45secs in to game... relative silence as some wag sings out: haaappprrpyy buuuurghhhhsah!.... dunno whatthat was all about - but it does sound like some proto pub singer. probably where most folk, who sing in the pub style, get their inspiration. it does sound like my older brother, also... who might have made some cameo appearance as a 13 year old crooning. excellent. no idea what he was doin' in portsmouth, though... ahahahahahahahahaha
