I swear Shawn can make a whole series of head-to-head trap testing as well as improving on old designs. Excellent as always, and sending warm thoughts to you, your family, and all your local critters!
I never in a million years would have thought a guy showing mouse traps would become a rockstar......but it's happened
Shawn was featured in an article about rat problems last Tuesday (February 28, 2023) in the New York Times. That has a global readership of millions, so he got a lot more free exposure.
@@chasbodaniels1744 It was a great article as well!
Can’t they climb back out??
@@Meanoldwoman2013😮
An interesting mouse behavior thing I noticed between the two traps that could help with future designs. Notice on the original, the mice would walk on the raised edge of the plate, while on the redesign, they would walk straight across the middle of the plate, which is higher. So if you want to control how a mouse approaches a trap, they'll stick to a higher path.
They avoid the obstacle
So committed to flip technology he has a flip phone. Respect.
Underrated comment!
_"Here's a computerised electronicised mousetrap with infrared sensors, solenoids, solar panels, and 4 arduoni modules to catch up to 1 mouse per hour!"_
DIY paper-plate-and-bucket trap: "Hold my peanut-butter...."
I wonder if the pet mice are by now conditioned to think, "Hmmm, I smell peanut butter ... that means the floor is about to drop from under me." But they don't seem to mind.
Being so genetically similar, it amazes me how smart and wary rats are, versus their tiny and dumb fellow rodents.
you dont even need the paper plate. I just put a half inch of bird seed in a five gallon bucket and they jump on down. Then they can't jump back out. Each morning I usually have two or three mice in the bucket from the night before until they are all gone.
This was one of your most interesting videos, Shaun, because of the two different trap set-ups and the variety of animals. Thanx for showing.
Sir, have you no shame?
We discovered a massive mouse population in the garage of the house we moved in, and this was a quick trap we could engineer with what we had and after 8 snap traps failing, we already have 2 in the bucket! This is no cost if you have some extra clutter and truly effective. Thank you so much for sharing this quick fix!
The is basically a DIY version of Shawn's favorite trap, the "Flip and Slide". Even though that trap isn't too expensive, if you have a large area to rid of mice, it's nice to see you can set up something to get similar results without spending anything.
It's also nice for people outside the US who might only have access to cheap copies of it
@@Nero_Karel Oh my gosh, THIS. Amazon has ONLY the floppy versions from China. They arrive pre-broken, so that you don’t have to. 👍
I've purchased 4 FlipnSlides and I think they're great!
If anything this is the inspiration for the flip n slide. That trap is newer than this.
Why don’t the mice run away before being eaten?
I am so glad your videos are somewhat back to normal.. we get to see the wildlife. What a beautiful cat. Thank you for your perseverance.
Shawn is such a G with his flip phone.
He just gives it a flip
Flip phones are based af.
My old Nokia brick finally stopped working… =(
CZcams channel and website for years too. Baffling. Love this man.
he don’t need no distracting smartphone, i’ve thought about giving up my iphone 12 for a dumb phone.
it makes me wonder why the people whom originally invented the paper plate mousetrap didn't make the plate upside down like yours, i mean you can simply look at it and see it would work far better in the upside down position. thank you for this video Shawn.
Lower center of gravity on the plate is all I can immediately think of. Probably keep it from tilting _quite_ as much immediately, and lowers the chance of it flipping all the way around.
I think it is a matter of simplicity. if the wire is centered on the bucket and the plate offset then if it flips all the way over the plate would catch the opposite lip of the bucket. then some of the time it would be facing up like Shawn made his to be. you just wouldn't need a string to reset the trap. I would think that having the bait be on the underside of the plate would work well though since it would mean the mice wouldn't be able to as easily get it.
Having the original orientation could lead to issues in rain unless there are some holes to drain the plate.
All I want is a dollar for everything I didn't think of.
it is so nice of you to recomment improvements to the traps!
I bought 2 of the trap door bucket traps & have had success in less than 24hrs. One placed in my basement & one in the garage. Exceeded my expectations!!! Thanks Shawn
Great haul, Shawn! Modifications seemed quite effective
I keep saying to my phone:
Don't Go, It's a Trap !!!
But they never hear me.
Plastic plates and the wire a little closer to the center of the plate. I wouldn't change anything else, but I'd put water in the bottom.
Beautiful bobcat! 😻😻
Nobody asked
@@user-jy5yi4rf8kfirst of all, there’s no need to be rude, especially to a comment posted 6 moths ago. Second of all, you do know how the comments sections in a CZcams video work, right?
Yours is way more effective, Shawn! The cool thing about this trap is it's simplicity and easy to make... and you don't have to reset it every time you catch a mouse... Probably the best and most practical trap you have shown...
Really good modification on the trap. To me it seems that the bait over the edge of the upside down plate makes the mouse commit where the original design does not. Simple and effective. Thanks for posting.
Bobcat was a great bit of video!
A couple of your modifications made a good trap amazing, great vid
Shawn!.
Long, long-time sub. I was subbed when you could show the kill. Very Sad about what YT has done to you.
But I must say, this vid is one of your best, most informational, and most valuable ever.
Love the motion camera footage, especially the bobcat
That barn sure has no shortage of mice, even after all these demonstrations. Just imagine if they were not being caught!
I missed the long videos like this, catching several mice. And it was a great idea to put one camera for a view from top.
Simple fix, I love the ingenuity!
The trail cam footage of the bobcat was priceless. Nice healthy ecosystem at your beaver pond.
Cheap and cheerful with a bucket, paper plate and a metal rod.
I would be terrified of living around your way with all of these wild and dangerous creatures.
Lovely to look at but only on your videos Shawn! xx Jean from Scotland
Try living in the mountains northwest of Denver. They’ve had problems with mountain lions this winter, snatching pet dogs right from people’s yards.
The changing centre of gravity helps with the improved version. It balances better once it tilts.
The original version shifts its centre of gravity towards the bigger end, making it less likely to catch mice.
This video takes the cake for best post-trap footage.
I absolutely loved the footage of the wild animals, you should keep doing that on the side
Your camera footage is always so beautiful.
I'm ready to watch some bushcraft videos as well. I'm stoked to see this video. I've got some mice problems recently one chewed on my water line.
Wow... A nice selection of Wildlife uses that Beaver Dam.
I wonder if the beavers get tired of all that traffic stomping across their roof?
Hi Shawn this does look like a great idea also cheap to make.
Simple and effective, especially with your modifications.
Awesome mouse trap idea!
A man that uses a flip phone is definitely an expert on making do efficiently with next to nothing!
Love your beaver pond! I hope there’s fish in it! Probably mink too!
Gorgeous footage of the beaver dam
Thanks for the video. Saved me some $ on buying the pre-made bucket trap. I'll do this tomorrow.
Great improvements you did.
Thanks for sharing and thank you for taking time off share with us have a blessed day
Great trail cam footage !!
I flipping love this channel
if you put the pivot just a little closer to the edge of the plate you could mount it centrally in the bucket and it would flip and hit the other rim. The photo from the article looks like it has a ramp on both sides as though mice accessing from either side is the plan
A mind over matter solution always works. Great improvement.
Love your videos!!! Wishing you success! :)
Very creative test!
I like it when you make something. That was an inspiration thanks .
I love the bobcat videos. More, please.
Great trap, but I'd give you a thumbs up for the olden timey flip phone!
Very practical and very efficient.
Shawn
We love your videos!
Very informative and entertaining…
Hug the kids for us
Walt
God bless
nice job pointing out native mice versus invasive!
Have made a number of Shawn traps they worked well and i ran out of mice.
How do you do the string? I haven't seen that part yet
apparently mice can't warn each other what's going to happen
This one is soooo good and easy, great for my grandparents cause is very simple to asssamble and use.
The bobcat was epic!
Good weekend!
Amazing video what a nice trap
.. the upside down plate is way better
Nicely Done. Thanks
Nice job on the video! I've built several styles of humane traps that all work with mice, I'd like to see something suitable for rats. I wish you had included side by side photos of the 2 different types of mice you were talking about.
Shawn 1990's called they said they want their phone back!!!!
😂😮
The new and improved for the win!
This is the exact video I needed
How about a gauntlet of old and new top 10 traps see what works best old or new love the channel always looking forward to new ones
Guys name that came up with this design is named Ken Criswell. I rem watching a short documentary years ago talking about traps over the yrs and new designs as well. This was one out of many diff design he had for traps.
Looks like bloody mouse Disney land on the farm - time to make more buckets and take down the entire colony ... and use some 25 or 50 gallon barrels for the rats ...
Shawn: ...non-native species...
Me: Yay! Outdoor footage!
Excellent episode,,👍🌹
Very satisfying!!
Good work Crawdaddy.
THANK YOU THANK YOU VERY MUCH. YOU SAVED ME FROM WASTING MONEY BUYING THE JUNK TRAPS THAT ARE SOLD ON AMAZON AND OTHER PLACES.
3:55 10 mice? Really impressive Shawn!
I like how the guy had 'stairs' on the wooden ramp.
This works until the mice learn to take turns with one always acting as a counterweight on the stable side.
UPSCALE IT!
55 gallon drum and a plastic salad bowl lid for rats!
Thanks for another great video! I'm currently battling rats in my attic. Been changing the bait every day and they're coming closer, but have not been caught yet. I built a box with three victor traps in individual slots like your wooden ones only mine are cardboard. I've tried meat, bird seed, chocolate covered popcorn and pretzels so far and no luck. Next I'm going to try bacon and then salami.
Did you try acclimating them to the traps for a few days, without setting the triggers? We’ve seen Shawn have good results by outsmarting rats. (Guess his Masters Degree came in handy!)
Yes I have just been putting different baits to see what they would take. Set the traps an hour ago with peanut butter and blew cinnamon across the traps and into the air. Just caught one rat.
@@marklanders630 They also love chocolate. I caught one with a melted Snickers bar last year. It ate the chocolate and peanuts and got stuck to the toffee on the inside.
Don't forget to try peanut butter
We use a blob of peanut butter and stick a couple of sunflower seeds in it, too.
Smooth plastic plate would be an option. Awesome channel. I have been watching for years. I bought a nice product with your recommendation. Ouell products. French Canadian!
One of the best parts of the video, the flip phone!!!
I am now totally convinced that somehow my 'computer' or the powers that be, have total control of my thinking.! I have been working on this very thing, but never consulted the computer, and yet this mysteriously show's up!? I've even covered my camera. Anyway it is so perfect for what I need.
That’s a nice kitty
Way simpler than the walk the plank trap. They all seem to be very similar in function. This one is truly the simplest
I wonder if the wild mice consider his pet mice to be class traitors, for helping him test these lol
Wow
Nice job!
Pet rat: “So am I just your Guinea pig?”
Simple, cheap, effective, clever - then cleverer.
Nice video I may have to give this one a try. Do you know if this would work on chipmunks? We are having a major issue with these around the house.
he says in a pinch if you don't have time like a nanosecond just to flip it over
what's the best bait and how to dispatch? thanks for the vid. Also, what did you use for the wire?
What trail cam does he use? We are interested in getting one.
I love this. I need to remove some mice in my greenhouse. But, I especially enjoyed the animals at the beaver dam.
I like the dish idea since they cant grab any edges.
Wow, you have a lot of mice to catch, I need to put this trap in my chicken pen to get the mice taking the chicken feed. Thanks.
to me, your improved version worked better for what you said but even cause you put the rounder part of the plate up, making it more slippery
Very nice video
Great redesign! Maybe put the peanut butter on the underside edge so they would have to get just a little closer to the edge.
The wild life will eat well today!
