Hi Dan, Garmin should send you a check and use your video in their training materials. Superbly done. I've watched it several times now as it was my prep for my GFC500 which I picked up today. Thanks for making it such an easy transition. I LOVE that Autopilot!
I’ve watched this a couple times. Incredibly done. It’s very clear, I love the multiple cameras to see what buttons are being pushed. The explanations are very clear and I can’t wait to fly my plane. I have a new 500 getting installed as well as dual 275’s. I get the plane back in a few days.
Great. We recently got a G3X Touch and a GFC 500 installed in our Piper Archer, and the instructors pointed us to this video to learn about the AP. Brilliant job of showing how it works, thanks a lot.
Dan as a CFII your video has been shared more often with students and fellow pilots than any other. GREAT JOB! You helped a pilots with a G3X and others with Aspen as well. Thank you. Pax Christi, carpe diem!
Thanks for the kind words. This is my most watched Garmin review video on CZcams. I did the same thing for the GFC 600 but I think the GFC 500 is more widely being used.
That was a very helpful video. I’ve watched the Garmin tutorial which was good but your demonstration moved at the pace of a real flight and really helped lock it in for me. The switch from nav to heading mode for course deviation hadn’t really occurred to me but I can see using it. Subscribing now.
Dude i love your flight sim videos that stuff helped me alot with my training you just earned yourself a subscriber and also the fact that your a pilot in the real world makes it that more enjoyable keep up the great work sir have a good day.
Dan, I just now subscribed. You are an excellent teacher. Am waiting for my new G500 and 650xi installation and then off I go. This will cut down my in flight learning curve by a lot! Thanks!!!!
Love your teaching style! I have an RV8 with a GFC 500, G5, GN400-W, and dual GDU370’s (The first generation G3X). I made 3 approaches yesterday and could not couple the RNAV+V glide-slope, though I’m 95% sure I had done it before. At about 20:10 your vid reminded me that I forgot to hit the APR button! :0
Great video! You speak very well covered very much subject matter in a short period of time. I love the multiple cameras so we could see all that you’re doing at the same time. Thank you very much.
That was very well done and explained, thanks for doing that… it’s so difficult to learn something like that while flying at the same time as I’m learning to fly.
Great video which has helped me justify my down payment on a GFC 500. Just installed the ADI and HSI GI 275s and love them. DON'T love the lack of integration with my legacy autopilot (KFC 150).
Excellent Video... My plane is in the shop and will have the GTN750xi/650xi/GFC-500/Roll/Pitch/Yaw modes and GI-275's... I really like your video's keep up the good work.
Good overview. I have my gfc500 interfaced to a g500txi display via the G5, which works well (the G5 mirrors the settings on the G500). One hint for new gfc500 drivers: I keep hitting that %^&* Toga button by accident. I used to turn the AP off to stop it from climbing, but I discovered the LVL button is a good way to cancel it, then you reprogram what you were doing before. In fact the LVL button is a good "get out of jail free" button anytime the AP is doing something you don't want, since it goes to the most passive mode (wings level no pitch) while you sort out what went wrong.
NAV mode is not missing. You choose NAV mode to follow your NAV source. Your NAV source can either be GPS or VOR/LOC. Selecting the NAV source is a function of your a navigator/radio, not the AP,
Good job in explaining it. Thanks. Do you think that 1 each Gl275 and 1 each G5 would be a significant plus vs. 2 each G5s and no Gl275 ... if the only other "upgrade" glass on the panel was a GNS 650 and the GFC 500? I'm trying to figure out what the least expensive "basic/minimum" upgrades from a steam gauge panel to some glass ... that would really give excellent workload reduction assistance to a single pilot in thick IMC. Thanks again. Chuck (NE Florida) : +)
On the VNAV descent (on the approach), I think you are supposed to "bug" the intercept altitude at the FAF. The VNAV feature (750 + GFC500 + GI275) will automatically level off at the intermediate altitudes?
Good informational video. We just got a GFC500 installed and this is a good intro. At 6:08 I would prefer to keep it in HDG mode before turning the AP on. Then after the AP 'settles' I would hit NAV. I don't like the idea of the AP starting turns when I turn it on. Just personal preference I guess.
@@RMAG Not an official term. I guess typing my thoughts did not come out clear. Is personal preference. Your way is as you know perfectly fine. I like to set the HSI heading bug to the current heading before I turn on the AP. So that when I turn on the AP the aircraft does not immediately starts banking trying to follow the NAV signal/GPS route. Can I skip the HDG steps, sure. I guess for me is a personal procedure. When using AP, I do this: 1) press the HSI heading bug to sync with current heading, 2) turn on AP, 3) press AP HDG button, 4) observe that AP is stable (for me, no banking), wait a few seconds then 5) press NAV to allow the AP to follow my flight plan.
Like a lot of aircraft owners, I've been wanting to upgrade my 40 year old avionics. I found out right away, that EVERYTHING revolves around the auto pilot. What can I expect for a price on GFC500 fully installed? As much as I'd like a nice new GPS, they aren't very much good if you can't couple them to your auto pilot.
In a follow-up how to shut off ESP for doing maneuvers…not totally Shute how on the 275 but on the G5 pressing the button and deselecting ESP, G3x press A/P bar and uncheck ESP…on the GTN750?? And on the GI275?? I love the GI275 too BTW.
VNAV has nothing to do with the glide slope. VNAV is a programmed descent to a specific altitude at a specific waypoint, and it is limited on the GFC 500 to the waypoint prior to the Final Approach Fix. To fly a glide slope or glide path you need to have an ILS or RNAV approach loaded and active, and the autopilot in Approach mode.
Enjoyed your video but have a question When you did the go around and hit the Nav button it showed up magenta. Now when I tried the same thing it didn't show up magenta, I have a garmin 530 not a 750 like you is this the difference ? If it is, what do I have to do to get the Nav in the go around.
I am not that familiar with a 530, but I was on an RNAV approach which is Magenta for the approach and the missed approach. So it will always be magenta. If I was on an ILS when the 750 gets to the MAP it will suspend assuming you are landing. If I do a missed approach, I have to unsuspend the 750, and it will sequence through the missed approach procedure magenta lines.
I didn’t notice any difference when yaw damper was on vs off. Maybe turbulence wasn’t bad enough, have you noticed if it significantly improves the ride?
My only experience is in my Mooney M20J which is not a very yaw prone plane. I do notice that it blunts yaw movement in turbulence but it’s not dramatic in my plane. I have heard others say it’s a big difference in other types of aircraft.
Forgot to mention the Garmin G3X can be used instead of a G5 or GI275 to drive the autopilot.
Do they (GI275/G5) slave to/from the G3X Touch or is there a switch to separate and choose if the G3X or GI275 is commanding the GFC500?
@@bshelton80 with a G500 TXi the GI 275 controls the AP. With a G3X it controls the AP and it it fails, a G5 will automatically drive it.
Do you mind if I contact you directly? I want to make sure I understand the intricacies...I have a student with this set-up in his M20 F model.

That is a great overview of all the GFC500 functions. It is valuable after viewing all the Garmin instructional videos. Thanks for posting this.
My sentiment exactly.

This is our set up. Your video was the best I have seen in explaining the operation of the GFC 500 with the GI 275. Thank you!
No one cares. 👍
2:44. "To Go" button? I thought it was a TOGA. "Toe-gah".
Nice presentation.
It is toh gah i mispronounced by reading the TOGO abbreviation.
Where is the TOGA button?
@@bradleys2320 in my RV10 the TOGO button is a separate button that was added we placed underneath the GFC.
This is by far the best Garmin summary I have ever seen for any of their products. Very well done!!
Thanks for the best practical tutorial out there! You're in heavy rotation since we got the GFC 500!
Dan, Great video - thanks so much to the team for the great avionics upgrade on N8170G
Wow. What a great teacher you are. Crystal clear for a layman like me 🇸🇪 ✈️
Agree.

Excellent video! I’ll watch this again to help prepare me for my GFC setup which is exactly like yours. Thanks!
Best coverage I’ve seen of the Garmin A/P. Useful also for the GFC 700 operation. Thanks.
That was an outstanding video! I have a GFC 500 and GTN 750xi on order and now I simply can't wait for them to arrive!
Excellent video, Dan. Very impressed with avionics as well as the video quality. Keep up the good work.
Just got my 182 home after GI275/GFC500 install 3 days ago. This was very helpful. Thank you!
Great video.....I have not been behind the GFC500 in over a year, good refresher! Thanks

Thanks for posting! I’ve got a Cherokee 6 in getting the AP installed now to go with the 275’s installed last year. This was incredibly helpful!
Well done…we are adding the 275’s and g500 so this was just great…thanks for doing this.
By far the best video I have seen on the GFC 500. Thanks, it was a big help.
I just had a GFC 500 installed in my Mooney. This is an excellent, informative video. Thanks!!
This is by far the best video explanation of this AP. Thank you.
Excellent production Sir, thank you!
Even more interested in updating my C182 avionics now.
awesome video, exactly what i needed to see before my GFC gets installed!
Really Good..... Perfect Demo Layout and explanation. Exactly what I was looking for without getting into my new plane.
Thanks so much. Cheers
Excellent comprehensive overview. Thank you.
Best explanation/video seen on the GFC 600 autopilot...
Thank you for taking the time. Super helpful!!
Best demo ever dude thank you!! Love the informative vids on the avionics🤙🏼🛩
great video; you explained it well how this autopilot works
awesome walkthrough!
Excellent, comprehensive video. Thank you
Wow - great video - agree with BCflys - going to be watching this again to make sure it all sinks in. Well done thank you.
Great video! I've been trying to get used to my system for some time, this has been a great help. I using the G5 but everything is very similar.
Great video and demonstration... Thanks

I didn't see a heading bug on the 275. Yes I saw the numbers lower left.
Great vid and beautiful panel! Ballpark $ for avionics + install/custom work?

For the first time GA has reached a point next to the airliners, the only thing missing would be an AT but even some airliners don't have that.

What was your all up cost for the gfc500 installed? Looking at upgrading the AP in my mooney. I already have a pair of G5s to pair it to

Got a question??? I got my twin Comanche upgrade the auto pilot to GFC500! Anyone know if Garmin planning to do Rudder bias in GFC500 class ??
Do you recommend having a yard damper for a turbo to 10?
Great Video, thanks a lot! Are you able to take your feet off the rudder pedals when the yaw damper is on?
The Yaw Damper acts like a shock absorber on the yaw axis. It lessens yaw turbulence. I still need to put my feet on the pedals on climb out, etc.
@@RMAG Good to know, thank you! Enjoy the beautiful Mooney.
@@RMAG Why? Doesn't the yaw damper do that job? Thanks.

GI 275 you can deselect ESP. No control from GTN750 for this.
Any chance you can do a super in depth detailed video on the VNAV decent and approach. I can’t get it to fly the glide slope down.

Great video, do you recommend the yaw dampener?
Depends on the aircraft. But for a twin engine, absolutely. Your passengers will feel it more than you do.

Yes. To not need to is called auto-throttles which are only found on newer adavanced jets etc.
