Gremlins 2 is insane. It's more of a meta commentary on the first one than a movie in itself, but it's really fun
Especially with the same critic that shit on the first movie playing himself lol.
Gremlins 2 is the bar scene from Gremlins stretched to 90 min. Which is not a bad thing
I could have done without the Hulk Hogan cameo, 'BROTHER!'.
100% correct.@@chriswells2010
Meta is exactly the word I would use
G2 is madness incarnate, it’s a next level satire and so beautifully cartoonish, and there will never be another movie like it. Incidentally it does feel more like a New Year’s movie than Xmas, but you can watch it whenever 🎉
This is correct.
Gremlins 2 is an Abraham Lincoln's birthday movie
@@leesmapman4764Ha! Well played Sir, well played.
Yes that movie is complete pandemonium 😂
I was so surprised as a kid when I went to see this at the theater. I was kinda disappointed. Years later I appreciate it more. It really is something else lol
This movie had the literal 1980’s Hollywood filmmaking dream team behind it: Presented by Steven Spielberg, scored by Jerry Goldsmith, written by Chris Columbus, directed by Joe Dante. It’s like an Avengers assembly of blockbuster hit makers.
…Also, Barney the dog is played by a furry fella named Mushroom, whom Spielberg says was the best actor that he ever got the pleasure of working with.
@@Scallycowellwasn't he the dog in Poltergeist and ET?
Gremlins 2 was pure genius. It's what happens with a filmmaker is pushed into making a sequel he didn't want to make, so he decides to turn the entire film into one big middle finger at the studio and unnecessary sequels in general. RedLetterMedia did a great Re:View of it on their channel, for anyone interested.
_Now, bear in mind, none of us has been in New York before. There are the Broadway shows - we'll have to find out how to get tickets. There's also a lot of street crime, but I believe we can watch that for free._
Just tell them Plinkett said it was okay and you work for Lightning fast VCR repair shop.
I never liked Gremlins 2 anywhere near as much as the original - still don't - but the older the get the more I respect it. Like with Batman Returns, the director said "I'm only going to do a sequel if I can do it MY way". And, like it or not, Joe Dante made the movie he wanted to make (and prefers, for what it's worth).
No, it’s all nonsense.
@@bushbabybotha9943 To you, but that's the subjectivity of film, isn't it?
Can we talk about how Gizmo cared more about Kate's story than Billy did? LOL
Billy is such a worthless dick in the movie.
yeah i noticed that too, Billy didn't seem very sympathetic
Yeah, though to be fair, they were in the middle of a very distracting situation. Gizmo is the one (out of every 10,000 mogwai) whose very nature is to be kind and compassionate.
Trust me,he was invested. I’m a guy and that’s what listening looks like. He heard every word and he’ll never forget it. I had to explain it like that because I loathe when people say “as a”
@@michaelblaine6494 Yeah Billy was definitely taking it in. I mean by the end he was just sitting there stonefaced, absolutely astonished at what he was hearing. Just because he didn't emote very much doesn't mean that he didn't care.
I'm so glad you mentioned the score. Jerry Goldsmith was one of the all time greatest composers.
Yes, totally agree. Goldsmith is absolutely one of the best ever to do it. When you see his name in the credits, you know the music will be something special. The brassy riff that concludes "L.A. Confidential" is possibly my favorite "movie's over, roll credits" music in cinema history. Goldsmith knows his stuff.
When my kids watched "Gremlins," my piano-playing teenager listened to the "Gremlin rag" that plays over the credits and immediately went up to her keyboard to figure it out. Just a terrific, wild, off-kilter yet catchy piece of music.
I think he also did the Rambo theme.
Hell yes!
Correct!@@AedanBlackheart
Gremlins 2 is absolutely wild. It's a very different feel compared to the original Gremlins but the insanity of the film is rarely matched. Also tons of amazing animatronics, puppets, and effects.
Billy’s mom needs to be mentioned right up there with Ripley and Sarah Connor the way the straight up wrecks shop on those gremlins. If only the Christmas music kept playing while she went full Tarantino on all of em.
Always felt this way. Homegirl was just making cookies and then stepped up to defend her house with extreme prejudice. 😂
@@archstanton664 if she didn’t get injured, this movie would’ve been over in ten minutes
If Billy's Mom was The Bride, Kill Bill would only have been 1 part, and that 1 part would have been 10 minutes long, tops.
Everyone probably already knows this but Billy's mom was originally supposed to die. Billy was going to open the door and see her head rolling down the stairs.
@@archstanton664 If anyone wonders what "mama bear" looks like...
Warner Brothers wanted a sequel but director Joe Dante wasn't interested in doing it. They told him he could literally do anything he wanted so he did. You will love and stay for all the end credits.
Kat So the next time your air-conditioner goes on the fritz, or your washing machine blows up, or your video recorder conks out, before you call the repairman, turn on all the lights. Check all the closets and cupboards. Look under all the beds. 'Cause you never can tell. There just might be a gremlin in your house
When my mother's cat had babies, one of them looked like Gizmo. She's now nearly 16 and sleeping in my lap. 😺

Yes that was the same theatre that was in "Back to the Future". It's the Town Square set on the backlot of Universal studio's. It's been used in movies and tv shows since the 40's, and it's still there and still in use today.
Right,I think it was in The Burbs as well. And a lot of Twilight Zone
I love that billy didn't make a mistake feeding them, yes he shouldn't have, but he at least made sure they just out witted him, it wasn't some dumb thing on his part.
Fun fact. The lead gremlin, Stripe was voiced by prolific voice actor Frank Welker. He’s played a lot of animals and creatures over the years. He’s been a part of so many projects, I think it’s impossible not to have heard him somewhere at some point.
A lot of the other Gremlins were voiced by Michael Winslow, AKA Jones (the sound effects guy) from Police Academy.
The voice of Scooby-Doo, Megatron, and all of our childhood heroes & villains. Tied with Peter Cullen.
Giz was voiced by Howie Mandel
Ok, the thing where Kat forgets she's giving a rating, goes off on a tangent, then tries to bring it back to a rating has become one of my favorite things.

That is DEF the same set used from Back To The Future - you can see the clock tower/city hall in several places, and yes it's the same theater Marty crashes into
So you definitely have to check out the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. It's one of the best horror sequels, one of the best comedy sequels, and one of the best sequels in general. I love that it doesn't try to top the original and it just leans into being a live action cartoon comedy movie. I also love that it pokes fun at the original and in particular makes fun of the rules. It's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I think it'd make for a great reaction and it's definitely worth a watch.
The moment she sees a gremlin shadow at 16:06 and seems SOOOO pleased with herself because of it is just too damn adorable.
The gremlins "singing" Christmas carols is one of my fav scenes -- that and the gremlins singing along with Seven Dwarves.
😂😂😂
I always loved how the mom played against the typical horror troupe....and her resemblance to Ripley ala Aliens should have been a hint she wasn't going down without a fight. 🤣
This film came out two years before Aliens. That perm was pretty much everywhere in the 1980s, for good or bad.
Gremlins 2 is a live action Looney Tunes cartoon. 😂 Director Joe Dante refused do do the sequel for years... he had such a hard time with the puppets he wanted nothing more to do with them. After years of the studio failing to get a sequel together, they told Dante "just give is a movie with Gremlins in it by next summer and you can do whatever you want". And what he wanted to do was a movie about why we didnt need a Gremlins 2
You MUST watch Gremlins 2 : The New Batch - it is it on a whole new level of crazy.
“Right now we are advising all our clients to put everything they’ve got into canned food and shotguns."

I love being an 80s kid!! We got to see this stuff when the ideas were fresh and new, young enough to be sucked into these movies, amazed by the story and how practical effects were achieved, rather than CGI. Now we get to watch others react to them and feel the nostalgia. Its almost like getting to watch them for the first time all over again sometimes.
Fellow 80's kid! This and The Lost Boys are my childhood...death by stereo!
We were indeed, the luckiest generation. Kids nowadays will never know what it felt like to watch something like Gremlins for the first time.
2:58 I love your gesture for Billy to kiss Kate on the cheek, because we've all wanted to kiss Phoebe Cates on the cheek.
Mom vs the Gremlins is my favorite scene.
Gremlins 2 is batshit crazy! Also, I don't know if it was mentioned yet but Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel
WOW! Shout out to you for acknowledging the film score. My favorite composer, Jerry Goldsmith, even has a cameo in this movie. Wait until you see the sequel... so unique it has its own category. Love your channel.
Joining the chorus here, GREMLINS 2 would absolutely be worth your time. Also, I believe the slime you're referring to in the outro was called GAK. Fun, but it had a weird smell and was a magnet for every bit of detritus on any surface it touched. Random suggestions for future movies: Anything from the early Dark Castle line-up, be it House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts, Ghost Ship, or House of Wax. Not 'classics' by any means, but I'd wager they result in a record number of air punches.
Would be great if she reacts to ALL of those suggestions!! :)
Wtf you mean, those ARE classics. Vincent price himself is classic.
13 ghosts was a classic too. Back in the theatre they had people dress up during the 3d segments and frighten the patrons in the aisles by running around and spooking them all spooky-like. Back in the day no one's seen stuff like that it'd scare the poop outta them.
@@AedanBlackheart No arguments here, but I was referring to the string of gore-fest remakes in the early 2000's. All that said, Kat could certainly use an introduction to the glory that is Vincent Price.
You didn't show this part in the video, but at the beginning of the movie, Billy draws a cartoon picture of Mrs Deagle and shows it to an old man. That old man is Chuck Jones, famous cartoonist, animator, and director of Looney Tunes cartoons.
Edit: I forgot to mention why this is important. Spielberg models his gremlins after the 'gremlins' that appeared in Jones' 1943 short "Falling Hare" - particularly the ears, which in the short were made to look like airplane wings.
That bar scene is always epic
I just realized another movie reference. The Futtermans are played by Dick Miller and Jackie Joseph, who were in Little Shop of Horrors (1960) together.
I love Kate and Billy's relationship. She's clearly already into him, he's clearly already into her, she's just waiting for him get up the courage to ask her out. I especially love Zach Galligan's performance when he does, selling the nervousness and trying to be cool when he asks her, then his giddy excitement when she says yes, then him going back to trying to play cool. And Phoebe Cates' acting in that scene is great too, that "oh, finally, you asked," and "yeah, we both know you're a dork, but that's okay, that's why I like you."
Zach and Phoebe were cast, apparently, because during their screen tests, they were kind of clowning around and Zach leaned his head on Phoebe's shoulder. They didn't think anyone was rolling, but apparently a studio exec saw that and said "See, he's already in love with her, just cast those two!" And they really do have great chemistry. Though in one of the commentaries, Phoebe Cates mentions hearing there was some concern from the studio on if she was "wholesome" enough to play Kate, since she'd just done "Fast Times At Ridgemont High."
actually, mrs deagle is the very real type of person who existed back then, the one the cartoons were mimicking hahaha naw but this is a great movie and its sequel deserves a watch as well.
Mrs. Deagle's are still around. We just call them Karen's now. 😂
I'm not sure what poster you looked at but he original 1984 movie poster was much better for tone of this movie and didn't spoil Gizmo. It was traditional hand art of Billy from the neck down holding a box and Gizmo's right hand pushing the lid partly off and reaching for Billy's hand with his left, inside the box is dark and you see the gleam of Gizmo's eyes. And the movie tagline was:
Cute.
Clever.
Mischievous.
Intelligent.
Dangerous.
I love how the Gremlins are aware of pop culture. It's such a great trait
That always gets me at the end when the old man chastises the dad saying he’s not ready, but says someday, maybe Billy would be ready. All of this happened because of Billy.
In my book Flashdance counts as a horror movie. As do all musicals.
You would enjoy Germlins 2. It is insane ! It even has Christopher Lee in it! In case you don't know, he is THE horror movie icon!
LOL the old ladies stair chair goes up like 4-5 stories while her house is only 2 stories!
The irony of Gremlins 2 is that although Dante didn't want to make it initially, and only agreed to do it if he could do something completely different, it is very much a continuation of the story, just the tone is far more heightened. He was essentially given carte blanche to have as much fun as he wanted, and took full advantage of it, ramping everything up to 11. The puppets in the sequel shine as highlights and are absolutely insane. I won't spoil it, but you even made reference to something that will make a special appearance! Just don't go into the movie thinking it is a horror movie or anything, it is more parody of itself than anything else. In some ways, the second one is an even more fun ride than the first. It is genre-bending, and can't really be classified into one thing. Definitely worth watching!
"As out tiny critter friends would say..." Critters... now there's a movie to check out.
Just wait until you see the sequel. It's truly an occasion where the sequel far outweighs the original. If for no other reason than it being utterly bonkers. Thanks and keep up the great work, Kat!
Sir Christopher Lee nailed that movie!!!
It's a spoof of the first movie. I love it, but I certainly wouldn't say it outweighs the first.
@@jasonkeene9834 they're too difficult to compare because they're that different. 2 is a total comedy.
Between the talking gremlin, Rambo Gizmo, sexy gremlin, John Glover's hilarious performance, and Hulk Hogan breaking the 4th wall, 2 is infinitely better IMO. You still get Joe Dante in the director's chair and Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates starring.
Love 2, but one is a legitimate American classic (and Xmas movie)
The Gizmo/Mogwai puppet really pushed the limits of animatronics at the time for (small) size, and the puppeteers HATED it. That's why Gizmo gets tortured so much.
The square is exactly the same as back to the future
Loving your reaction, btw
Gremlins 2 with Hulk Hogan needs to be watched .
gremlins 2 is more a comedy/fever dream. the director didn't want to do it but the studio kept bugging him so he would do it if he had total control on what it was and he went bat-sh*t insane. It's great but not much of a "horror" movie. still worth a watch.
I love how proud you are when characters make good decisions! The mom knows what the what is😂Love your reactions.
Gremlins 2 is over-the -top silly fun! Its almost a parody of the first movie the way it pokes fun at itself while still having all the horror, thrills and fun of the original. I recommend.
Nobody ever really talks about how Billy's mom wracks up a body count like Jason Voorhees.
Fun detail about Mrs. Deagle: All of her cats are named after currency.
the shot of them eating chicken has always grossed me out and is hard to watch to this day hahaha
In the bar at the beginning, Billy talks to Chuck Jones, legendary Looney Tunes animator.
Yes, that's Flashdance referenced in the bar party. Michael Sembello, who provided the signature songs for Flashdance, even made the song played here ("Gremlins...Mega-Madness").
At the inventor's convention, there's composer Jerry Goldsmith standing right next/behind Mr. Peltzer in the phone booth. Steven Spielberg is wheeling through the frame in an electric wheelchair. There's Robbie the Robot. And in the background there's the time machine from the George Pal movie, which vanishes from one scene to the next.
Fun fact: Gizmo was voiced by comedian howie Mandel, It’s actually the same voice he used for Bobby in Bobby’s world.
I think you’ll like gremlins 2!
While this is fresh in your memory, jump right into Gremlins 2. The producers actually sued the furby people for making them look too much like Gizmo. The producers won. Then Furby came out with an official Gizmo doll.
Seen this in the theater twice. First was in 1984 when I was 7 years old. Second time was in 2019. Two truly memorable movie theater experiences.
There are two movie title easter eggs in Gremlins. When Billy passes by the movie theatre in the beginning, they show „A Boy‘s Life“ = working title for E.T., and „Watch The Skies“ = pre-production title for „Close Encounters of the Third Kind“.
1. Keep them out of bright light.
2. Don't get them wet.
3. Don't feed them after midnight.
I never really thought of this as a horror movie, since my parents let me watch it as a kid, but I guess it has plenty of horror elements. It always seemed like a comedy to me.
Haha… I had a Gizmo backpack when I started first-grade. 😂 Let’s pour out one for 80’s kids, amiright?
I watched a ton of Hammer Horror at the age of 11 years, and my grandparents actually encouraged it!
One Of My Favorite Syfi Movies !🫢🙆♀️🥰🖥
this movie is really hard to define- in some ways it feels like jurassic park, where its more of an adventure but there are plenty of horror moments and commentary sprinkled throughout.
Really? The entire premise is about a bunch of evil little mutant creatures running around town killing people. Some cute elements and laughs don't alter that fact. It actually has a pretty dark / somber tone after awhile plus lots of violence and jump scares throughout. I think horror-comedy is the best way to categorize the film.
0:47 A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators.
Howie Mandel was Gizmo's voice. A bunch of other people voiced/made the sounds for the other Mogwai/Gremlins. One of them was Michael Winslow, the sound FX guy from the Police Academy movies and many other 1980s comedies.
Gremlins 2 is a revenge film. The studio infuriated Joe Dante by even wanting to make a sequel, so he went out of his way to make the movie as ludicrous as possible.
Gremlins 2 is great! Not Christmassy, but really funny super fun, worth checking out for sure.

@@nsasupporter7557 It's the same director and almost all of the same cast and team. @@DanielSmith-rt1wz that’s cool 🙂👍
I respect that 🙂 it’s just that whenever a person describes a sequel as a “parody of the original” that’s usually an acknowledgment that it was bad and they’re just mocking that sequel. Composer Jerry Goldsmith deserves so much more credit and recognition for elevating movies from bad to good and good to great, based on the music scores that he crafted so deftly, meticulously and often with little advanced notice. He was a titan who influenced a generation of composers. It's a shame film music isn't treated with more respect.
The score was created by Jerry Goldsmith, Oacar winner for the '76 film: THE OMEN, he worked with Spielberg two years earlier (earning another Oscar nomination) for the outstanding POLTERGEIST score.
One of my absolute favorite Christmas movies! Well done! Also fun fact, the Kingston Falls set is the same set for Hill Valley in Back to the Future.

This was written by the makers of our childhood memories, Chris Columbus. Writer of this and also Goonies. Director of Home Alone, Mts. Doubtfire, The first two Harry Potters and more! Has produced a ton more. Howie Mandel voiced Gizmo! Michael Winslow involved as well!
A timeless classic. The background story (to which this is very loosely derived) of gremlins post WWII is very interesting also. This film was 50% of the reason for the pg13+ rating & changed the rating system. I saw it when I was 5 in the drive-in cinema. I loved it, please don't compare this magic with furbies, or whatever that is...
The score is part of the reason why cinema has somewhat died off. Thankfully The Japanese film Godzilla minus one is showing Hollywood how it's done...
I'm always impressed with how Spielberg can take something from previous movies and use it himself as a 'nod' to the earlier example - such as Almira Gulch.

31:41 "... what more could there be?" That's probably what the director (Dante) said when the studio asked for a sequel.
And so, basically in protest, he made Gremlins 2. You'll see when you watch it. 😃
IFrom what I understand, Gizmo was supposed to turn into Stripe in the original script, but when they started screen testing the Mogwai puppet, Spielberg suggested changing so that Gizmo lives. He knew that thing was so cute it may have turned the audience against the film if Gizmo went evil.

Best reaction channel. The sequel is definitely worth watching. It loses the home-y Christmas feel but goes over the top with parody and satire. Are these horror movies? I don't know. If you watch the 2nd one, just know it's a complete satire of itself, so much to the point where it makes fun of it's lore, characters, story, and has a very, VERY special cameo.
Yes, that was the premise, to explain the Mogwai. Problem is, nobody asked and now we have a whole movie about it. Imagine the utter shit show the upcoming part 3 will be. Remember the Ghostbusters reboot?
It has quite a few special cameos.
@@GarthTheDestroyer The one in particular is the most special because it's just so random.
I believe the general idea behind the baby mogwai being "evil" is that their species is mischievous/menacing by nature so as newborns that's what they know so they act on it. Gizmo however is supposed to be much older and as the saying go, with age comes wisdom. He knows what his species is like but being up in age he has learned that acting like that isn't the way to be. That's why Gizmo was sad during the scene when he birthed the new mogwai because he knew how the new ones were going to be
So the reason the gremlins are still mischievous is because even though they have changed their appearance by going through the cocoon phase that hasn't actually aged them, so they still by default have their newborn/young mindset so they still act as such. Odds are even if Gizmo at his current age was/turned into a gremlin he would still be the way he was as at the mogwai stage. There is also the odds that had the new mogwai that Gizmo birthed lived and aged they would have eventually became wise like him and learned to not act the way they were, that they would have calmed down and had the general calmness and cuteness as Gizmo
You should read the novelization - yes, there was a novelization of _Gremlins_ and it's just as Batcrap Crazy as you'd expect it to be - where it's explained in the prolog that Gizmo's species is an alien-created biological weapon, sent to destroy us, but Gizmo is actually a _malfunctioning_ unit of said weapons system (which is why he's the only _nice_ Mogwi, while the others are very... _not)._
@@jamesnoneyabizness5611 very interesting, I never knew that. I'll have to check into that
