technically the customs charges are kind of fashion nova’s fault. i had a similar experience with zaful (i live in canada too) so i looked into it a bit more. apparently when companies are shipping items across country boarded they have to disclose what’s in the package (because things like sports memorabilia, among other things, are subject to a customs fee) so since brands like fashion nova and zaful don’t declare what is inside the package, customs has no choice but to charge a bustles fee (usually determined by the weight and size of the package) because they cannot just “guess” what’s inside based on the brand. they have to just assume it is something that requires a customs charge. it sucks but it’s the reality i guess.

If you’re buying clothes from the USA and importing them to Canada you don’t have to customs/duty if it’s made in the USA.... which let’s face it, is almost nothing. I lost my mind when I got a customs bill of $275 on a $350 order. So I called Canada customs and asked for details on everything. Clothes, electronics, appliances etc. Another tip is “assembled in USA” doesn’t count. You still have to pay customs on that. There’s now a customs and duty calculator on the Canada Customs website. It’s helpful but not totally accurate cause I was told a lot is up to the “discretion” of the particular agent processing your package into Canada.

I'm in Canada too - custom charges are based on the value of the items you purchased not the weight of the package. I ordered my bridesmaids dresses from lulus and paid almost $200 in customs. It SUCKS. some brands lie when they declare how much the items are worth (especially when you are ordering from China you'll often see the value of items listed at like $5 when you purchased way more) so that's often why you don't pay customs on those packages.
