SHINee's "Replay," which came out in 2008, is literally considered one of the best debut songs of all time for any Kpop artist because it's so timeless and it never goes out of style or sounds outdated no matter how old it gets. And this is why SHINee are Icons.
This song actually came out more than 14 years ago, however, SM Entertainment rebranded itself and started its new CZcams channel in 2011. The company reuploaded most of their older videos at that time. So all their older MVs and content have a 2011 date, but could be much older than that.
"Replay" isn't just nostalgic, it's legendary. And SHINee are legends. Every new rookie group in the industry has covered "Replay" at least once in their career and it's one of those songs that is pretty much compulsory for everyone to know and learn, even still today.
Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14. However, now SHINee are known for the fact that there are no longer any fixed roles in their group. The main vocalists can rap, the rappers can fill in as main vocalists and they're all impressive dancers. SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry.
The Noona (the older girl SHINee have a crush on that they are singing to) in the "Replay" MV is the leader of their sister group***, Victoria from F(x). This MV came out more than a year before F(X) debuted so this was Victoria even before debut. (Funny thing is, Victoria is native Chinese and she says she was still learning Korean during this time and she could barely even say SHINee.) Victoria was so perfect in this role because she is a few years older than any of the SHINee members so she fit well as the lead actress in this MV. As the song says, 'Noona neomu yeppeo .... replay, replay, replay ...." In other words they are saying "pretty older woman I really like you and I think you like me too ... every time I see you I need a replay of the moment over and over again in my head." Noona neomu yeppeo is a Korean term that essentially means "Pretty older woman" Noona neomu yeppeo is a term that is only used by guys to describe a beautiful woman that is older than them. There really isn't a literal translation of the term so that is why the song is called "Replay" in English. But in Korean it is called "Noona neomu yeppeo." That's why if you watch SHINee on a lot of variety shows and TV programs, the older women in the show often ask SHINee to sing this song to them. This song makes all the women swoon.
***** SHINee and F(x) are both SM Entertainment groups, they debuted within a year of each other, they both are 5 member groups (Now 4 member groups ;( ) and they have similar music styles and concepts, etc. F(x) is pretty much the female version of SHINee.
SHINee are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee where designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to create the trend. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album, and yet, somehow it will always sound like SHINee. The reinvent the industry with every new release.
Fun fact: SM originally wanted to make SHINee a hip-hop group. Hip-hop was the style of music that was really popular when they debuted. That's why Key and Minho are both rappers and how Taemin started out as a popper in dance. But as Key tells it, they just didn't have the swag to pull of hip-hop, so right before their debut SM switched up their sound and style to something that fit them better and they came up with the signature classic SHINee R&B vocals they are now known for.
Onew (Pronounced Oh-New in English or On-New with a Korean accent, real name Lee JinKi) -- the one in the hat --is the leader of the group and he has one of the most unique voices in the industry. (Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) He is one of the most coveted male voices that all other singers dream of getting a chance to collaborate with. He even holds the record (40+ seconds) for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch.
Jonghyun -- the one with the headphones -- is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy" and songs for Taemin, IU and Lee HI, etc. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills, and he was the first of SM's artists to have a fully self-wrote album. As the main vocalist, Jonghyun is the one you hear with all the amazing high notes and R&B runs and ad libs most of the time.
Key -- the one in green -- is our fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment, so Key is recognized for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He has a reputation for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also considered SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker.
Minho -- the one playing basketball --is the main rapper and visual of the group, but his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is a top actor and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. He is also known as a star athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win.
As you know, Taemin -- the one in yellow -- is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry (one of the top 2 best dancers of all dancers in Kpop), and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. As you can see by their "Replay" MV, even at 14, Taemin was one of the best dancers in Kpop, and you will soon discover with the more that you watch from SHINee and Taemin's solo work, that he has only gotten more magnificent over the years. Taemin is also one of the most popular solo artists and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM.
SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. As a SHINee World -- what SHINee's fans are known as -- or Shawol for short (pronounced like shy-wall), I can tell who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with my eyes closed with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop".

fun fact: at the time Taemin (he was 14-15) barley got any if any lines, in early Shinee songs due to him getting little vocal training as he was going through puberty at the time, so the company decided not to use his voice a lot, most of his vocals in early songs were adlibs or heavily supported by other members. So it wasn't until later on he started actually showing what his voice sounded like, so thats probably why he wasnt shown as much as you thought he would aside from his dancing cause he's always been top tier. So it's cool to listen to their songs and their content through the years as you can hear how his voice grows apart from relying on the other members. Replay is top tier debut song but thats not surprising considering its Shinee

    • @milindawilson9175
      @milindawilson9175 Před rokem +8

Right. And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. That's why in these first few songs you will see that he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song.
However, if he was really tone deaf like people used to say, he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. Someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune.
But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice.
If you notice, Taemin's style of singing, especially in SHINee songs, is a lot like Jonghyun -- SHINee's main vocalist, and one of the best vocalists in the industry. And the more you get into SHINee, you will see that Taemin fills in for Jonghyun whenever Jonghyun was unable to participate in a performance. And even today, Taemin often takes over the high notes and the parts that I think would probably have been Jonghyun's parts in their new songs -- he has now become one of SHINee's main vocalists. Jonghyun was the one that really took Taemin under his wing and helped him to become the singer and performer that he is today. So, many think that Taemin's voice emulates Jonghyun because he is the one that taught Taemin to sing. Jonghyun has always been Taemin's biggest supporter and the one that rooted for him the hardest and loudest out of anyone.

Love this debut! Love the whole old early 2000s R&B vibe. Whenever SHINee get in their R&B bag they really kill it. They have some killer R&B tracks on their B-sides.
When this song first came out I remember loving it so much. It was basically my anthem. But at this time I was so focused on being a Cassie (TVXQ) and being a VIP (BIGBANG) in the kpop world, that I didn't deep dive into SHINee. I was a casual Shawol, if you will. Then suddenly everything changed and they've become my favorite kpop group of all time.
    Some more SHINee recs:
    1. Sherlock (Clue+Note) - An experimental title track the mixes two B-sides Clue and Note together to create a third song, Sherlock. There's a full MV and a dance performance MV. Both are dope.
    2. Married to the Music - A pop-funk SHINee classic with a horror theme. Perfect for Halloween. There's a performance MV version that shows off the cool choreo but the full MV can't be missed.
    3. 1 of 1 - The title track from their 80s/90s retro album of the same name. If you want nostalgia, this is it. Also, the retro promotions for this album were incredible. They filmed retro style commercials and you could even buy the album on cassette tape.
Also, their live convert performances are killer. There's also more opportunities to react to some of their b-sides like Symptoms, Trigger, Evil, Hitchhiking, or Odd Eye.

Taemin singings in the chorus of "Replay." The reason why people say Taemin has no lines in this song is because he had no solo lines. But he sings when everyone sings together. They just don't highlight his vocals like the rest of the members or give him any individual lines because, as you mentioned, he was still growing into his voice and still learning how to sing, etc. They mask his flaws with the rest of the members voices for the first couple of song releases.
It's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc.

Hey just a tip, love the discussion about the sonic history and background of the debut track. Really sets y'all apart from the boring reaction channels. But I noticed y'all talked through a lot of the song. I'm not opposed to the pausing and discussion, post listen discussion, or even talking within a reaction as well, but having a full discussion mid video seemed a bit too distracting. You lose focus of what the song is trying to do, and the viewers lose focus of what you're saying so it's a lose lose.
