  • It seems no one has uploaded the actual scene from the Buffy episode Once More With Feeling, with the song Walk Through The Fire. This is my favorite song from the whole episode, and this is my favorite episode!

This episode was brilliant in that it starts as a seemingly lighthearted musical but once "Rest in Peace" hits it gets super dark, and then this and "Something to Sing About" just amp the sadness up to eleven. It's an absolutely genius episode.

Similar to how Xena did their musical episode (actually before this one!); for a show that was *far* more silly than Buffy most of the time, they used their musical episode to resolve probably the darkest storyline they ever did.

Yes, I even have my own theory about this episode. I don't think the "demon" was really a demon. I think it was some guardian spirit that staged the whole event to bring them back together. And no one actually died, that was also staged.

    • @calumsanderson6741
      @calumsanderson6741 Před 2 lety

As much of a dick as Joss has been revealed to be in recent years, at least he forced every actor to sing in their own voice. I think Nicholas' voice is the weakest but he has a whole damn duet and it isn't horrible to listen to. Michelle still has a few lines to sing but focuses on dancing because she knows that's her strong point.
It's a common practise in Bollywood to get actors and then have singers who sing the songs in the film - the actors don't often sing the songs themselves. It's funny how that's the norm in India but here in the west if the actors aren't singing themselves we find it cheap and lazy. I don't understand why that is. Perhaps we've simply had poor syncs and dubs. I'm not against bringing in a vocalist for a musical for an actor who can't sing. But this episode is one of the rare chances in musical production where you can force everyone to sing even if their voice is crap - because that's the point. Sweet is a musical demon. He's making everyone sing and dance until they combust. He doesn't care whether you have a shower voice or are Pavarotti. You're going to sing and dance you're going to die doing it.
Were I in charge of a musical I'd definitely want all the actors to sing in their own voices, even if, like Alyson and Michelle, they aren't comfortable with the idea or practise. But if push comes to shove I'd dub the actor. I'd be dictatorial over the dub though because it would need to be right.
There's also the issue that, because we in the west assume actors in musicals sing their own songs, when it's revealed they haven't, somehow that's worse than the Third Reich. We dispose of them - the actor, not the singer, not the director, not the music coordinator - and it proves we as an audience are thick as pig shit. Unless they have enough clout to be a producer, actors very rarely get a say in what happens on a production. They're paid to show up, get dressed, say lines and do it again the next day. If part of that job is miming to a song an actual singer has sung, what's the problem.
Just want to point out some musical-focused stupidity we have. But I agree, the fact everyone is singing in their own voice adds authenticity to this song - narrative reasoning aside - that ups the enjoyment even more.

Especially Buffy’s songs. “Going through the motion”, “Walk through the fire” and “Something to feel about” perfectly describe depression.
That line “why can’t I feel, my skin should crack and peel… I want the fire back!”
Seriously, when I was in therapy because of major depression, my therapist asked me not to only analyse my feelings, but to actually feel them!
    And I was like: “How?”
I learned to become less numb by feeling with the characters of Buffy. And Pixar. I allowed myself to cry for them, and later on, I dared to cry for myself.

"I'm under your spell," is utterly brilliant. First it's a declaration of love, but then it's repeated as a realization that what she thought was innocent love was actually an abusive relationship. Not to mention, of course, that in the show Willow literally cast a spell on Tara in the previous episode, and Tara discovers that, as a metaphor for her realization that (despite loving her) Willow is also abusing her in an unethical way, and the relationship needs to end. There are so many layers of interpretation in just that one sentence! It's really impressive writing.

This was honestly such a dick move for the rest of the Scoobies to make! Like when I first saw this season as a kid I was uncomfortable with their reactions but couldn't really verbalize why. Now, as a mature semi-adult, I finally realize exactly how much Buffy was suffering during the last couple of BTVS seasons and how her friends just kept making it worse. For instance, at the beginning of this episode, they were still under the impression that she was only recently being tortured in hell (possibly for centuries considering that time passes faster in that dimension) until her resurrection. Even with this erroneous expectation, they still expected her to just immediately bounce back to her old self, take care of her adolescent sister while barely any older herself, start finding a way to support the household financially, miraculously get over her mother's death (which in her POV, happened very recently), and keep up with her duty to protect the Hellmouth all at the same time. And now, just because she hasn't been coping as well as her 'friends' would prefer her to be, when her sister and only living relative is kidnapped and is believed to be in life-threatening danger, they still expect Buffy to handle everything herself. I mean come on! If they have issues with how Buffy is handling things can they at least wait to discuss it until after Dawn is no longer in danger?! You know the kidnapped 14-year-old girl for whom they are nominally all responsible for? Additionally, how is Giles' first solution to this mess to leave the country instead of something actually useful like therapy or talking out their problems like mature adults? If I, a college student, can see and understand this why is it a roughly 40-year-old well-educated man like him can't? While her friends do hold a lot of culpability in this debacle as well (some more so than others), they are basically still kids and as the sole adult within the situation, he should have done more for them.
(P.S. Sorry for the rant fellow BTVS fans but I have way too many opinions about this show and can't help but verbalize them on occasion)
(Also I do like Rupert Giles, so please don't think I'm carelessly bashing any of the BTVS characters. I deeply appreciated every single one of the main characters)

Okay I like Giles for the most part but he handled this all wrong. Buffy was already feeling lost, confused, betrayed, numb, etc. Once he found out the reason for her withdrawal he should have cancelled his trip to England. Instead, just like every.male in her life (except xander) he abandons her. Is it really that surprising that she turned to Spike? He, at least, was willing to be there for her.
