    Im an Ilswich native and Regent 3s are a particular favourite of mind. We also had som Regal 4 single deckers again with pre selector gearboxes, the sound of those and the Regents were gorgeous! Their green and cream livery was most attractive but i think Nottinghams darker green as on 161 is better, a luscious dark green that must havd been a joy for the painters to apply. Where have all the stately classic colours gone, so many brash colours these days and paint layouts that have no respect for the natural lines of a well designed vehicle. I wish i could ride on gorgeous 161 !!!

    I travelled on the very same buses as the green one, & I LOVED them! Today's buses are just soulless tin boxes. I'm licenced to drive buses, & I'd just LOVE to drive one of those great old ones!

    I was a driver at Sherwood depot and city depot . We drove Layland Mark 5 at that time. The fastest bus at Sherwood depot was bus No:44 or cold be 22 1970 era .We also used the Route master for the Mapperley run, as this was a steep climb.

    I used to drive an AEC Regent Mk3 myself, took it to shows and once took it on a hire, the passengers loved it!
    I only drive modern coaches nowadays but ride classic motorcycles now

    Such a fascinating sound at 1½ grand! I hope this bus ends up in a movie depicting the 40s or 50s.

    I think maybe the clutch on the starter needs a bit of attention and the excess fuel setting on the pump needs increasing? AECs usually start quickly.

    Those buses were also in Lisboa, Portugal - I remember them in the late 70s and 80s... what fond memories

      Yes, they must have taken considerable skill - and muscle - to drive on the challenging Lisboa cityscape! It was great to see one leaving the Carris Museum a while ago. That AEC musical transmission takes some beating - at times maybe a little 'saudade?'

    WE know that in London as the RT over 5000 of them though the London spec RT chassis was different from what the provincial operators got but the ACE noises are very similar.

    It was awful that we lost the AEC Renown to arsonists. AEC Regent V 266 was restored as new but I'm told it is now in Stafford and has been hacked to pieces. All that work and expense gone to waste!

    Was 666 one of the units damaged when vandals broke in and started a fire about 25 years ago.
    Do you still have the South Notts Albion Lowlander .

    • @nottinghamareabussociety4278
      @nottinghamareabussociety4278  Před 2 lety +1

      We do not sadly enough and 666 was not damaged in the fire from the information I know.

      @brianbrunger Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for your reply , I remember first seeing 666 at the commercial show at the NEC before Nottingham City Transport took delivery. I believe it was a concept body design that was never pursued.

    • @tallblokesam
      @tallblokesam Před 2 lety

      666 suffered some heat damage as she was parked on the other side of the roller door (inside the building) to the main fire which was started outside.
      The metal shutter got so hot that the paint blistered on the front 2 sections of OSF bodywork above the drivers cab area and on the edge of the nose cone, melted the drivers window rubber and side repeater but luckily it was all cosmetic and she survived.
      The same sadly cannot be said of the South Notts Lowlander (no. 89) that you mentioned, she lost the entire top deck and rear of the lower deck in the fire and was subsequently scrapped along with South Notts Fleetline (117), NCT Renown (370), a Wrights Bedford Plaxton Coach, NCT Atlantean (523) and a couple of others that I forget the exact details of.
      It's one of the saddest memories of my time spent at the site. I'm so pleased that the current group have managed to make such a success of the place and wish them all the best for the future. 👍
