    I miss the days of true local television!

    I didn't live in NYC at the time, but thanks to early cable & a vivid memory, I really felt like I did.

    Great clips! At the tail end of the Magic Motion commercial, the last five seconds of the theme (at 2:24) were used by WNJU/47 for their station identification bumpers during the same period. Now if any old WXTV and WNJU stuff would turn up ... I'd especially like to see WNJU's "El Gato" cat bumpers from the late 1970s into the 80s.

      Yes!!! It must have been ND music that was available then. I'm looking for it. You would probably like "Happy Flutes" by John Scott.

    Well, until they invent time travel, I'll just have to settle for this. The early 80s: when I was totally carefree and my only responsibilities were homework and keeping my room clean. So glad I was a kid then and not now.

    @MSTS1 The typeface is called Eastern Souvenir, created in the late 1910s; ITC released their version, ITC Souvenir, in the early 1970s and continues to be used today.

    And I can't say that the late 80s version of the Day Camp ad was that much different than this one, it still used the late 70s early 80s imagery, just the animated balloon was a bit more modern.
    This "available at" wasn't too creepy this time around!
    Nice 4 O'Clock bumper slide at the end too! LATE GREAT GROOVIE!!!!

    Wow - that "Fame" shirt at 4:40 boasts some pretty fantastic properties - I gotta get me one!

  • @MSTS1
    @MSTS1 Před 14 lety

    @wmbrown6 - Interesting to learn that they still used kinescope recording into the late 70's.
    The music and titles I do seem to remember in a way, but probably from my pre-VCR era of watching NYC TV: '78-'82.., beginning back when I was still in High School, and when we had for a while here WCBS-2 as well..

  • @MSTS1

    Great vid, Tap.. Was the 4 O'Clock Movie just on M-F on Ch. 9? If so, no wonder I don't seem to have any taped; I was always still at work..
    The H-5-0 title animation looks just like what I was making at that same time except, on slides, not motion picture. Same camera, just different aperture + shutter..
    And just a note- the 'Magic Motion' ads' text looks very much to me as the same font used in the opening titles of 'Jaws'. The font that I found which is closest to that is 'Soutane'.

    WOR, the home of the Young People's Day Camp commercials, IIRC.

    Loved it when The Mets always had WOR-TV CH.9,Does that channel still exist or is it now a distant memory? Can you upload the Final Touch commercial where a young large lovely lady named Margo Martindale went by each column and tickled the kids sock feet until the top section in column A was found and tickled the kid's foot as it ended,as well as the Crest toothpaste ad where the dad has his son learn about said toothpaste,tells him he has school,gets him in bed and tickles him as the ad ends plz? I'd appreciate it always thanks.

    The TV Guide ad was also seen before a 1982 sign-off of KABC-TV in Los Angeles - and the difference between film reproduction there and on this is interesting to my opinion, anyway:
    watch?v=NBkateT20kg
    Evidently, the way WOR's RCA TK-27's were calibrated was not as sharp as KABC's equipment . . .

    Martins! Where's the jingle? IT AINT JUST (ring) PAINT!
    Nice, cheap chyron work on the French restaurant ad! I had experience operating the same chyron writer that they used in this ad over 15 years ago in the TV club I was a part of in school!
    YOUNG PEOPLES DAY CAMP! A Channel 9 staple ad for sure in the 80s! If YT user scratchbomb77 didn't post it first I'd say your the winner for unearthing it, but he has the updated late 80s version, and THIS IS THE ORIGINAL so way to go Tap!

  • @DanZero77
    @DanZero77 Před 14 lety

    @NewYorkRetroKing Just saw it, WOW! Creepy and dark like this one !!!!!!
    I remember that chyron writer being a BEAST! It was from the time period this ad break aired! Very early keyboard that was LOUD as you typed, and we could do credit rolls, very cheap and rudimentary effects like text crawls and blinking text, good times!!!

  • @burtiscurtis09

    Ah classic NY ads!
    Martin Paint is no more!
    "La Cocotte" which means "the casserole" in english, closed in 1991 and I'm sure that host is long dead.
    Young People's day camp is still in business but no way near the $62 week tuition, try $373.75 a week or $2,990 for 8 weeks.I hope they get upgraded premium tote bags and banners for that price!
    "Fame Shirtmakers" is no longer around, probably could find them on eBay.

  • @johnissoevil
    @johnissoevil Před 13 lety +1

    @joker5339 Same here, although I like how WPIX added network affiliation to their station without really changing anything, they're the only former NYC independent that still has that local New York City feel. Fox doesn't seem to care to want to do something retro for either Fox 5 or My 9.

  • @wmbrown6
    @wmbrown6 Před 14 lety

    @MSTS1 - "The 4 O'Clock Movie" was indeed only M-F. These filmed ad bumpers were, in essence, color kinescopes, with a film camera pointed at the monitor screen as the videotape graphics were playing. (Bumpers for "The Big Preview," "Million Dollar Movie," and the pre-'79 "Late Movie" were likewise produced this way - and all masters for the opens/closes were on videotape.)

    LOL, I remember the Young People's Day camp commercial with the talking yellow balloon. Corny, yet funny at the same time.
