Crane implosion at Hard Rock Hotel collapse in New Orleans

  • Thundering explosions toppled two cranes Sunday that had loomed precariously for days over a partially collapsed hotel in New Orleans, in what city officials hailed as a success and said efforts now would focus on retrieving two bodies still inside the ruined building.
    The fiery afternoon explosions sent up massive clouds of dust and sent one crane crashing to the street while the second fell in a way that left much of it resting atop the hotel where officials said it was "stable" and could be removed piecemeal.

    Cantrell says the first mission now that the cranes have been toppled is to remove the last two bodies from the rubble. After the bodies are removed, Cantrell says, the building will ultimately be demolished. www.wwltv.com/article/news/local/orleans/cranes-demolished-what-happens-now/289-5aa7260f-3ff1-4493-af57-df1bae3293a1

      Pool Watcher - The one near Canal (on top of the building) seems to me to be more stable than it was. It is no longer in danger of falling on another building (the theater). They will cut it up and haul it off in a week, I suppose.

    • @TowFan
      @TowFan Před 4 lety +1

      My concern was it falling off the building. The way it's laying over the building chances are it won't happen. Also, it's going to be dangerous for men to be entering a partially collapsed building to cut up the crane. Maybe it would be best to implode the structure with the crane in it's current position.

How can these guys relay information when it is literally a Tower of Babel? The Hindu Foreign run construction company...corrupt as sin itself apparently. List of prior problems including cutback on materials from jobs to use to build mansions for their sons. Skimp on job materials of the main project, you can build a mansion too at no extra cost. It is the socialist way.

    How did they possibly think that would work with only 3 charges on each crane. One charge in the middle is not going to make it implode. Where did they think that arm was going to fall besides right on top of the building directly below it?

    • @BrianHagar
      @BrianHagar Před 4 lety

      They planned for the cranes to fold in and both fall onto the building for further controlled demolition. The one that fell on the building went nearly as planned. I don't think it was supposed to end up hanging over the street though. The one that fell in the street is the one that did not go at all as planned.

    • @GH-oi2jf
      @GH-oi2jf Před 4 lety

      edoh - They didn’t “implode” it, they cut it, like you would cut down a tree. It was supposed to fall on the building. The crane near Canal St. did more or less what they wanted it to do. The other crane was a little wild, but no significant harm was done.

    • @Stephen2846
      @Stephen2846 Před 4 lety +1

      Hit the settings icon, set the sped to .25, then watch it again. It looks like two charges per crane. One to cut the support cables for the jib and the second to do something to the counterweights, perhaps just downward force. They should have used beamcutters on both sides of the jib at the vertical support structure. That would have caused the jib to fall straight down. The .5 seconds or so later, blow the cables.

      Actually, 4 years later we now know the collapse was not due to the construction crew, but rather the engineers who designed the building. The crew was actually reporting the issues and were worried that the building was going to fail, but when reported they were told to shut up and get back to work.

    The timing was completely off. On the taller crane the second (lower explosion) should have came later to allow the boom and counter weight to settle instead of pulling it away like it did. The second (lower) crane would've fell the same way if it didn't get caught on the structure.
    So were these "engineers" or just kids with big firecrackers and "degrees " who have no intelligence or common sense. About as "educated " as the architect or engineers who designed the building.

No charges to separate the main jib from cab connection they got lucky on the taller crane because the jib was higher and took longer to contact the top of building not so for the lower crane and you can see when the counter jib separates from cab connection the crane falls forward and stays on top of building. FUN FACT: THIS WAS INTENDED!!!!! The crane was already leaning that way after the collapse, meaning it coming down on the hotel itself was nearly impossible due to simple physics. Their solution was to cause the counterweight to swing onto the hotel and then the lighter crane structure to collapse onto protective padding set up on the street. This went exactly as planned, and they had the road closed and all kinds of protection set up for when it fell. This was not a case of a lowest bidder doing a shitty job, this is an example of people smarter than any of us in these comments planning something to a T that looks chaotic to the rest of us.. Maybe we should all just shut up and let the experts do their thing sometimes, m'kay?

    • @frederalbacon
      @frederalbacon Před 4 měsíci

      @@TheFiscallySound Dude, they literally had thick padding on the road where the crane fell, they knew exactly what was gonna happen. Did you see the crane leaning that way already? Also, conflating the absolute abysmal planning of the building pre-collapse with the planning of the completely unrelated contractor brought in post-collapse is a big logical leap at best. It's like blaming the people who took cleaned up Ground Zero post 9/11 with the collapse itself.
