    I pulled the trigger on a set of TS1-IM after your previous review. I am beyond pleased with the forgiveness, height and sweet feel of my Maltby irons! I used my six iron last month for a 160 yard 2nd shot uphill on a par 5 at my local club. It was on target for the pin and once I got up to the green, I found my Taylormade Tour Response Stripe in the cup for an albatross.

    @Frakk_69 Před 2 měsíci +34

    The secret sauce of the Maltby TS line is they all have nearly identical MOI but different vertical COG and slightly altered loft progression to match up. Players with slightly higher strike patterns will tend to prefer the TS1IM (.788). Players with slightly lower strike patterns will tend to prefer the TS3 (.691). The TS4 sits in the middle (.765). All three are fantastic clubs.

    • @michaelfulcher5743

      I appreciate your comment. When you say a slightly higher strike patter, what do you mean? Higher trajectory? Hitting higher/lower on the club face? My miss tends to be thin/low on club face. Would one be better fit for my miss?

    • @Frakk_69
      @Frakk_69 Před 2 měsíci

      @@michaelfulcher5743 Strike location on the clubface. The closer you strike to the sweet spot (combination of horizontal and vertical COG) the better the club feels and performs. The TS3 has a very low vertical COG (VCOG) so players who tend to have a thin miss will still be striking "closer" to the sweet spot compared to a club with a higher VCOG. All of this is affected by angle of attack and shaft lean and most people will "find" the sweet spot of a particular iron, but matching to your tendencies has benefits because it will feel "right" immediately.
      One way to go down this rabbit hole is to look at irons you've owned and pick your all time favorite and your all time most hated. Look up their VCOG values on the Golfworks MPF rating chart and compare. A lot of times you'll see a pattern. Every iron set I've fallen in love with has had a VCOG of around .790. As a thin misser, you might find that the lower the VCOG the better...and not many designs by any manufacturer get it as low as the TS3.

    • @erock1070
      @erock1070 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@michaelfulcher5743 He means on the club face. The smaller or lower the Vertical center of gravity on the head or VCOG (as Maltby calls is) number, means the center of gravity is lower in the head. The lower the vcog, the ball should launch more easily with less spin Vs a higher vcog in the head (higher number) should launch more flat and spin more. Maltby likes a lower vcog and his MPF ratings take this into account. Irons with lower vcogs score really well in his mpf iron head ratings. His irons are pretty low moi though. like 12-13. To where a company like Ping has been going with higher vcogs and higher moi heads (17-19). So its all about what you want in an iron head. I am a low ball hitter and do find irons with vcogs in that < 0.800 range to hit the ball higher than irons with a higher .800+-.900 vcog.

    Really appreciate you reviewing these Gabe and also a big thanks to bringing the Maltby brand to my attention in general. Looking for some advice if you don’t mind. I’m currently in my 4th year of playing golf, 21 handicap and see myself ending the season somewhere around 16-18hcp. I’m gaming a starter set I bought second hand from Craigslist (top flite XL7000 originally made in like 2012).
    Some basic info on where my game is at right now incase it helps. I don’t struggle to get the ball in the air, I’d say decent ball striker atm. I currently lean a bit more to the sweeper side of things but do take a small divot on my shots (getting better). Hitting around 22-25% GIR on my rounds so far this season which is much better from years prior. Been steadily improving every season but things are seemingly starting to click for me this year. Still young, played sports my whole life and can see myself getting to single digit golf eventually.
    I’ll be upgrading at some point this year and it’s either TS1-IM or these TS3’s, I’m leaning TS1-IM purely based on the looks but wondering if that might a mistake? From everything I’ve seen and read it seems like I can’t really go wrong with either but having played both I was wondering if you’d (or anyone else with experience) recommend one over the other for someone like me. I likely won’t be upgrading again for at least 5 years so any insight would be much appreciated.

The feel, especially when I swapped from Nippon Modus 105 to the MMT 85, is the best of any iron I have hit, ever. Also the low mid launch really gave me the best trajectory as they do get up there. Ive owned the ts-1 and ke4 max prior and these are easily my fav Maltby design. Great review and glad to see confirmation of my thoughts.

    The cost depends on cost of the shaft and grip...I have a similar Maltby irons..with great shaft..ends up 109$ per club and I do the assembly including spine alignment..super feeling and worth the money..Stressdr

    • @DoubleBogeyBaker
      @DoubleBogeyBaker Před 2 měsíci

      I built fishing rods and I would find the spine by bending the rod with pressure on the tip and rotating in the palm of my hand till I felt tension and it would pop in place. That’s how I knew where the spine was. How can I find the spine of a steel shaft without having to pay $20 or $25 per shaft to get “pure” charge from maltby? Is there a diy method?

  • @rhawksfam
    @rhawksfam Před 2 měsíci +1

    The video was SO motivating that I went to the Golf Works web site to price out a set. Why not if they are less than $600 right? I was ready to pull the trigger on a second set of irons. Well... That price is for heads only. After you choose shaft and grip, price will be closer to $100-$150 per club depending on which shaft and grip you choose. Options for PUREING and special trimming adds more. That's still less than big name brands. Main downside is that you won't have the option of doing an in-person fitting session with a professional fitter.

      You need to go to the Paks tab. There you will find the pre determined (not built) sets. And they build them to order. The sky is the limit with Golfworks and components and you can get as costly as you like but these TT Score shafts are really great as a "budget" option.

    I know you probably don't have these clubs on hand anymore so it'll be tough to do a head to head comparison, but I'm curious what your thoughts are comparing the TS3's to the new P7CB's from TM. Seems like the design and tech are very similar with the 1025 carbon steel and co-forged tungsten. Wondering if the TS3's hang in there against a similar club that's nearly 3x the cost.

    • @AZstu324
      @AZstu324 Před 3 dny

      So having hit quite a few clubs, I'll say that anything Maltby produces is on par, and sometimes even better than the OEM options. They don't cut any production corners. They last a long time and don't wear out like some of these others might (I've heard stories). Definitely don't let the low price throw you off. They're a world class brand for sure!
      Example: speaking for the TS1-IM'S, I had a set of them (the ones Gabe reviewed) and my buddy plays the new P770's. He paid $1500+. The IM's are so much better. They're fully forged, look better, and feel so much better. Playability is probably equal but they're way more forgiving. The Maltbys are just better on paper and overall performance. I now play the TS3's and those are as good as anything!
