  • I visited Bill Katchel's layout with the HARMS model railroad group in February of this year. WOW what a layout! Bill has done a wonderful job capturing the essence of the PRR with scratch built catenary.
    Thanks Bill for letting me see your layout.

    Without a question, and certainly enhanced by your incredible photography, this is a trip into 'a time ago' that is period specific. It is one of the most incredible layouts and documentaries of model railroading I've even seen. Stunning! Unbelievable! Incomparable! Breathtaking! Monumental! Singular and unlikely to be matched - all come to mind.

    I don’t know who in hell could give this a thumbs down. This is a great layout. I normal don’t comment on this stuff. But it is great. It’s about the area the trains traverse...not the trains. That is what makes a great layout.

    I really appreciate the format in which this video was filmed. It concentrates on various scenes on the railroad and not on individual trains. It gives the viewer plenty of time to see the detail in each scene. I need that for advice in helping with scenery on a friend's HO model railroad.

    This is an amazing layout! I LOVE heavy urban railroading and you have captured that feel perfectly. I must admit though, my favorite part is seeing the weathering at horseshoe curve. I have not ever seen anyone achieve this look of the upgrade tracks being weathered tan from sand, downhill tracks weathered brown from cast iron brake shoe dust. Fantastic work!

    Hi Fred - You did an outstanding job of taking and editing this video. Bill Katchel has a five star, spectacular model railroad that, if it hasn't been yet, should be featured in a model railroad publication for many to see and enjoy. The level of detail with the scenery, rolling stock weathering, structures, and catenary is second to none. I can't say enough about how great this model railroad is. Thank you very much for posting and sharing this video! Mike

    A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout and primarily run Pennsy locomotives, though as I'm looking to model a 1940s-50s steam-era railroad, I don't think it will look quite as modern as this.

    I guess "beautiful" is the wrong word to use for a model railroad layout, but there is an authenticity and such a great feel to all of this, that I should probably use the word "magnificent". I've seen many layouts, and this one is second to none.
    I only watched the video until 3:29, but that's all I need to see. I don't need to see anything else.

  • @musicman8942

    Thanks for the nice video - so much better than the other videos I've seen of this layout. The others make it look gloomy and sad and old beyond it's years. I'll not name names but he's the one who does the 'cab ride' vids that are jerky and not generally that good.
    Question though - that shrimper on the other side of the bascule bridge - is she grounded or what? Up on the keel like that and she'll tip over.

    Great layout and clip. Thanks for the post. I found out about this layout awhile back. I have no idea why it hasn't been featured in Model Railroader yet. It would be nice to see an MR trackplan of this layout. I like how they do trackplans. You wrote below that you might get someone to to a professional video of this amazing layout. Good idea! Maybe it can be done similar to how Allen Keller presented layout tours; following the train from on end of the layout to the other, then the other way following another train doing some switching. Maybe even a cabride! There are a few cabrides of this layout done by the same person on here but the picture quality is poor and there are people in the camera view. I subscribed to your channel. Thumbs up! p.s. Is it Katchel? I thought it was Kachel.

      I think I found the guy that's videoing Howard Zane's layout which you were talking about in a comment above. I found him on CZcams a few weeks back. Is his name Forrest Nace? He said he should have the DVD/Blu-Ray on Howard's layout in a couple of months. Do you know if he's going to film Bill Kachel's layout next? He said he's looking for layouts to film after this first one. His CZcams channel is Nace's Videography LLC and he has his e-mail and a link to his webpage in the description of the one clip he has on there. It would be amazing to see Bill's incredible Pennsy on a professionally done DVD/Blu-Ray of 2 hours! Ok, just wanted to let you know since you know Bill and you mentioned the videographer before.

    Gee Fred , I caught a brief glimpse of a large rail yard which you didn't include in your video . Too much to see I guess. When I was younger, I told my boss that I just started building a model railroad in my basement. He said that when he bought his house the previous year , there was a model railroad that took up the entire basement and complained that " it cost him $2000 to have it all ripped out" . . . Ouch !!!

    Great layout, but only one scene with electrics, and why would you need 2 GG1s to pull such a short freight train. Also most Pennsy cabooses did not have cupolas, they had side bay windows. How about some E-44s pulling freight, and a few MU units for commuters, as well as a Metroliner. In electrified areas, one very rarely sees diesel locomotives pulling freight or passenger trains. Love the detail on the catenaries.

  • @johncriswell1106
    @johncriswell1106 Před 6 lety

    All of these are well thought out and constructed but nothing looks real. Every piece of rolling stock is fresh plastic, unmarred and looks like it just went through the dishwasher. Railroads are grubby, dirty, graffiti covered and often look like they are about to fall to pieces. And most model trains are run like a 4 year old rides a tricycle, as fast as it will stay upright. Trains do not run through a town at 90 miles an hour..... models need to be run at scale speeds.
