Instead of turning the oven on, you can just turn the oven light on and put your rising dough in the oven! It keeps it warm (but not hot) without using as much energy!

Tip: I’ve baked homemade bread for 50 years. Milled wheat berries in a flour mill. Your dough was wet because the wheat flour wasn’t finely ground. So when you try this again. Either have a friend with a flour mill fine grind wheat flour for you or buy it already ground. And knead the dough long until smooth elastic. Let raise. Punch down. Let raise again. Punch down. Shape. Raise again to nearly double. Bake. Remove to rack to cool.
For your first attempt. You did good.

If you have a kitchenaid mixer, you can get a wheat grinder for that. I use hard red wheat for my sourdough. But I also only do about 30% of the fresh ground wheat- I do the rest of the flour in there as just organic bread flour. The great thing about wheat berries is they store easily for a long time, like 10 years!

About thrifting...My feelings are similar to yours. I've decluttered a lot. Now, I have to really like/want/or have a use for something before I buy it. If I have the feeling that I'll soon be sticking it into the box for the consignment shop, I leave it! I have enough stress in my life w/o adding more! Yes, the fun is in the hunt!😊

I learned how to make bread as a young teenager. That bread needed more flour and you need to knead it with your hands until its very elastic or stretchy. About 15 min probably. Then let it rise until double then put in loaf pan then let rise again then bake it. Also put a teaspoon of the honey into the yeast water. The yeast should rise and be all bubbly. Hope this helps. 😁

I have a delicious and super easy bread recipe. I substitute half the flour for whole wheat flour and add pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, Italian seasoning, sunflower seeds - whatever I’m in the mood for. It’s also a super wet dough, it would be impossible to knead 😅 you just stir it up and let it rise and then it gets baked in a Dutch oven. Best bread recipe I’ve ever tried. Just wanted to share that so anyone who ends up with a wet dough doesn’t lose hope hahaha. It can still turn out amazing

Don’t be scared to add more flour if your dough is sticky. Weather makes a difference with how much flour is needed, some days more and some days less . Also your dough needs to rise again after it’s put in your bread pan. Why do cooks think we know how to do it? 🤩 recipes need detailed instructions! I purchased a used mill and it’s been fun learning to make bread. Fresh ground berries smell so so good!

Do you have a coffee grinder? You can use it to grind the wheat berries to a finer flour. You can get them on Amazon for a decent price. Also, the dough should be sticky enough that it sticks all over your hand if you dig your hand into it, but dry enough that if you lightly pinch and poke at it with your finger tips you don't get more then a little light residue.
Also, bread needs to rise again after moving to the bread pan. It will rise a bit more after being put in the oven, so let it rise till it is almost as big as you want the finished product to be, then put it in the oven.
I have a great recipe using molasses, honey, and brown sugar. 😁 I could send it to you.

Look up Jovial's dry sourdough starter method on The Elliott Homestead blog or youtube. It saves you all that "babying". My starter sits in my cheese drawer in the fridge and it's been there for a few months since the last time I made sourdough tortillas. You pinch off some, reconstitute it to make the bubbly starter as you need it for recipes. It takes planning of course but you are not wasting any starter or having to feed it at all. ;) That is exhausting!

Freshly milled flour takes a while to absorb the liquid. Your doing a great job!!Freeze your left over freshly ground wheat berries bc they will sour if not put in the freezer from all the natural oils on wheat berries. Can’t beat the nutrition from homemade bread with freshly milled flour! God made wheat berries with so much nutrition that we can only get from them. It’s pretty neat!!

Wow Megan, that was fun to watch! So many things. I loved the thrifting. I live in Boise Idaho and I'm not sure if we have any thrift stores that look remotely like yours! The ones I've seen are kind of junky lol. I always want to drink an iced coffee with you - you are a first-class barista! Also, I think you should remake your bread but vary your technique a bit. IMHO you should knead the bread immediately after stirring the ingredients together, before the first rise. Do you have a Kitchen Air or other electric mixer? If so use the bread hook and knead it for about 5-7 minutes or until it begins to look slightly elastic. (if no electric mixer, roll up those sleeves girl!) Then melt a bit of your coconut oil in a clean glass bowl, cover your bread with that oil, and leave in the same spot to rise with the towel over it. Once it has at least doubled in size, maybe 1 1/2 hrs., punch it down, form it into a loaf like you did, but then let it rise again until it has formed into a more "loaf" shape. Bake from that point. Oh and if you can, grind your flour with a machine made for that or just buy it ready-ground. Can't wait to see your next beautiful loaf! Blessings to you and your lovely family.

You certainly fit a lot into a week! Your loaf looked good and tasty and grinding your own flour makes it more nutritious because the berries contain wheatgerm which is removed from commercial flour. I would only grind as much as I'm intending to use as the wheatgerm makes it go rancid quite quickly.
Kneading to develop the gluten would make the bread lighter but it takes up time and you're already so busy!. You could add much less yeast and allow it to rise overnight which would allow a long time fot the gluten to develop by itself. You could also get a mixer with dough hooks to knead for you, it just depends how much bread making you think you'll do in the future.
I agree with your friends that showering is a chore and I much prefer baths!

It's been my experience that home-ground whole wheat generally needs longer rise times. (Moisture for 1st rise was fine...whole wheat will absorb more moisture.) Then it needs more flour and kneading (til elastic) before its baked (I usually do a 2nd rise in pan as well). Plus, a slit on top of loaf with sharp knife tip before baking will help let loaf expand more in oven. Best wishes on 2nd try!

Shape the loaf or rolls and then rise for 35-45 minutes before baking. Another cool trick is to heat your oven just until the coils turn Orange. Turn it off and put your dough in the oven to rise …fool proof on a cooler kitchen day.

I haven’t been at Pa farm show in probably 20 years and it’s still the same ! Thanks gave me so many home vibes 😊I grew up and lived an hour north of Harrisburg (lewisburg area ) for forty + years before moving to Mo . Yep Pa is still home to me ❤I would think butter would work as well as shortening, it’s to make the bread soft , and the honey or sugar helps the yeast work .I think the flour would soak more liquid if the berries were ground finer then you need to knead it until the gluten develops, you should be able to stretch it until you can see through it ( window pane test ) Now I’m anxious to try to grind berries , I bake two loaves of sourdough every week for our family of three and my daughters young family . Nothing like homemade bread !

Great video..but such a lot of work for you..thanks. i taught bread making for 30 yrs...a good basic recipe is white flour ( 3 cups) plus one third cup natural rolled oats..water .three tspn.yeast and 2 tspn salt. No need for fat or sugar. Mix( shouldn't look sticky) and knead at this stage for 5 to 10 min. Shape into rolls or one loaf tin. Cover & leave to rise 30 min in a draught free warmish spot. I cover with a shower cap. Then bake in a preheated oven 210°C . Tip loaf out & cool on a wire rack. Easy peasy. Handle roughly when kneading dough!!
    I dont both to grind.

Practice makes perfect on the bread… kudos to it being edible. You don’t have to have a mock mill.I honestly never heard of using a blender. I used a K-Tec kitchen mill for years now I use a NutriMill so I can leave it on my counter.. I do sourdough but did yeast for years just give it another rise when you put it in the pan and it gets light and fluffy. I did laugh out loud but be encouraged… I’ve had flops.

I'm so bad at insta...I wish your sister of choice had a CZcams channel...I have my feelings hurt here at times, but I love you and your family so I never miss your videos...the Jayna segments are my favourite because my cousins are my heroes. To see your grown up relationship really sings to my heart. It's been a long season of grief for me and anything that helps me celebrate life, fills my soul. ❤
Watching Vonnie sort out the Lincoln logs with expert flair, made me silly happy! After hearing you say you ask your tiny babies to "troubleshoot" when issues arise, helped me immensely to realise how smart and thoughtful all your children are and their future is limitless. All children need the confidence of their parents and seeing people take the time restores faith.

I really enjoy your videos! Thank you for sharing your life with us. I wanted to say that we love our Mockmill! It’s well worth the money. I think it would go really well with your aesthetic, too. 😉 Also, a mix of prairie gold (hard red spring wheat) or soft white wheat flour and bronze chief (hard red winter wheat) flour work well to make the bread less dense.

Usually add the honey in the yeast water in bread making.

I haven’t even finished the episode but saw the having a Mary heart in a Martha world book and had to comment. It’s a brilliant book as a very active person who wants to show Gods love by doing it takes me a lot of time to embrace sitting with Jesus and the importance of being in his prescience . As a northern Irish person I feel I cheat at bread as I make soda bannock with buttermilk. It’s yeast free and its super quick.

@@MeganFoxUnlocked it’s best on the day and buttered. It’s very light. You can also make it with dried fruit and a little added sugar for a sweet version

I read that book in my bible study. Before we started, I thought the ‘Martha’ comparison was Martha Stewart!! 😂 Maybe not far off! Enjoy the book, it was awesome!

Loved this video! I found it very interesting to watch! Hope you keep trying with the bread! Like you said, it’s always edible:) I’ve baked quite a bit of bread, but I use pre-ground whole wheat flour. I’ve heard fresh ground flour measures differently because it’s all fluffed up.
