It will be three decades to the day next January 4th in 2023 when London Today and London Tonight first hit the screens in 1993. Since its demise into the networked ITV format, the two programnes are not the same as it was all those years ago.
The original format of London Tonight was the only Carlton success story! 18 months or so later it was all changed of course, with a 30 minute news and ‘After 5’ which got the more lighthearted stuff
Bolton Wanderers were in the Second Division (currently known as EFL League One) at the time. They went on to famously beat Liverpool at Anfield in the replay.
As Carlton had already started London Today the Friday before, I don’t get why LWT couldn’t use the ‘joint’ service that weekend? Unless the LWT news contract hadn’t expired perhaps
There was no regional news on day 1 of Carlton. They were only on air until 5:15 of ocurse. They saved the big launch of London Today/London Tonight until the Monday - it was a normal work day with the full range of bulletins
LWT's own proper news service was absorbed into London News Network the following day.
