In this episode of Vintage Voices from 1840, Charles Dickesn has had tremendous success with The Pickwick Papers and the last of the American founding father have died: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.
    The stories include:
THE story of the year, easily eclipsing all others, is the marraige of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
After the dismal reign of King George IV and the non-descript reign of William the IV outside of anything maritime, there is much hope riding on the young Queen Victoria with echoes of hoped for success from the last queen, Queen Elizabeth.
We review other news stories people are talking about, with the crimes that shocked England including the first of many assassination attempts on Queen Victoria
Our Agony Aunt Corner is filled with advice of a more propriety nature as was usual in 1840
    Recipes suggestions in the papers
Some general news items from the UK including
the unexpected sudden death of a child, and near death of another, from the staple of all households with children in the UK, Godfrey's cordial.
and an in depth look at the marraige day of Queen Victoria
Major news stories, letters from the public, recipes, gossip, local news, and a curious incident internationally

Eels feature BIG in cuisine back then! Can't say it is our thing... the tarts sound nice! Oranges were a real treat back then! In all of the cooking - lots of fat and sugar! Sugar was very very expensive. The tarts were most probably well out of the reach of the average person back then, but the soup would not have been! Especially in the coastal towns 🤔

@@nadiabrook7871 How kind - thank you! 🤗We will be back to more scandal in the next episode (1903! Edwardian times!), but the event had a major impact for decades to come not only in the UK but across Europe so we thought it was worth the detail. Thank you,. as always, for your very kind support!🙏

😏We had a request on one of our earlier episodes to include adverts - so we have! Yes, we have been surprised too by some of the adverts - far more encompassing than we had originally thought. 🤔 the Gdofrey's cordial - omg! That was HUGE. It was in every household with children.
