Zagreb has an extensive tram network with 15 day and 4 night lines covering much of the inner- and middle-suburbs of the city. The first tram line was opened in September 1891 and they've been serving as a vital component of Zagreb mass transit ever since! Trams operate on 116.3 kilometers (or 72.3 mi) of track! The oldest settlement located near today's Zagreb was the Roman town of Andautonia, now Ščitarjevo, which existed between the 1st and the 5th century AD. The historical record of the name "Zagreb" dates from 1134, in reference to the foundation of the settlement at Kaptol in 1094. Zagreb became a free royal city in 1242.
"Childhood home of the brains behind the White House tennis pavilion" 💀. Slovenia's a gem! Beekeeping heritage permeates Slovenian culture. Approximately one in 200 people keep and tend to bee colonies. Locals share a deep respect for the winged insects as indispensable pollinators in the food system, and honey appears often in traditional Slovenian delicacies. The Carniolan honey bee is bred exclusively there, it is the only protected native bee species in the EU. Both the world's oldest wheel and flute were actually found in Slovenia! The flute was discovered in Divje babe cave near Cerkno and has been declared by experts to have been made by Neanderthals, while an over 5,100-year-old wooden wheel was discovered in 2002.

I enjoyed these two videos very much and am looking forward to the ones to come. It is NOT weird for young people to appreciate classical music any more than it is for them to enjoy train travel. It just goes to show that you are really open-minded about a wide variety of things and your balanced approach to life often shows through in the commentary on your productions. 😊

Exactly! Accidents happen, we make mistakes, nobody's perfect! So I don't blame you for not thinking about checking because my LIRR-pilled, MNR-pilled, NJ Transit-pilled brain isn't used to trains being split so I wouldn't check either. Acknowledging mistakes and learning from them is how we grow as people. Now with that aside...what a crazy journey in Croatia! Koprivnica really needs to build a pedestrian bridge, because making people cross the tracks like that is crazy. They should be thankful it's overhead and not third rail! That 6112 series is also used in Bosnia & Herzegovina! The Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina initially ordered just one intercity train, but they currently have no intentions of ordering more.
The coat of arms on the church at 6:19 are the coat of arms of Zagreb (white castle on red background; though the current coat of arms has a blue background) and Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. The kingdom existed from 1868 to 1918 as a constituent kingdom within Austria-Hungary. Ruled by the Austrian Emperor like the rest of the empire, who was confirmed by the Croatian State Sabor (or parliament). It was a concept advocated by Croatian leaders during national revival. It proposed a united kingdom between these three regions, which were already within the empire but were politically and administratively separate entities. Dalmatia didn't actually join as it was denied in 1867 and remained a crown land and part of Cisleithania.

Ah, the exuberance of youth! Shortly after your exciting Interail Europe trip, this senior citizen from downunder embarked on his big trip to the 'mother' country (that's what we irreverent Aussies call the United Kingdom). Seven Weeks from start to finish including stopovers in Canada in both directions. I would love to do some of the journeys you did with Hans, but I'm afraid age, financial situation and the current world uncertainties might make this a pipe dream only. But you never know! If I win the local lottery and my health is still good, there is something to look forward to. Thanks so much for sharing with us your adventures with Hans of five years ago. "Meine Gute" as my dad would say! You actually nailed JFK's gaffe.
    = I'm from Berlin.
= I'm a big jelly donut with no hole.
The crowd laughed for a second and then cheered politely.
Vienna is the namesake of fried veal cutlets....
No one in Vienna will sell you a but you can buy some !
When I took my younger son on my much shorter train tour of Germany, we had three goals:
meet his music teacher (who happened to be in Berlin at the time),
tour the Beatles Museum in Hamburg,
and eat as many foods as possible in their namesake locations.
So we ate frankfurters in Frankfurt and actual American hamburgers in Hamburg.
Kiddo was not keen on cutlets or dead tortured calf meat, so no visit to Vienna.
Danishes were too plain so no day trip north to Denmark.
My guy was ten years old so a visit to Plzen was right out.
And cheddar was the only cheese he'd eat.
And unfortunately we totally forgot to eat berliners in Berlin!

Satisfying conclusion and the promise of more to come, thank you so much! Not a moment wasted watching this. Mixed feelings to hear that Croatia has just recently gone full Euro-Schengen. The positive is the smoother border crossing and unified currency. The negative is that before this recent switch, Croatia was a very handy timeout for my Aussie chums in Europe, as Croatia used not to count towards the days they spent in Schengen. Thanks again! \m/

Track work from Hunagrian border via Koprivnca do Zagreb started in 2016 and is scheduled to end in 2025 - there is upgrade of the corridor including conversion of a single track railway to double track on the entire 100 km long route. Maximum track speed will be raised from 100-140 km/h to 160 km/h.

Nice. After my compliments of last weeks (that still implies for this one), two of my experiences on the rails. First 1991.
We arrived by nighttrain in Milano from Bari at 6. Made some coffee and looked for a train home. A train to Zürich, change in Arth-Goldau to Basel. After arriving there it appeared that a direct train to Amsterdam was due in 3 minutes. At its platform the conductor had a problem with an elderly lady, trying to board the train. Our chance to get on! In 2022:
Traveling from Utrecht to Athens by rail and boat, the Nightjet Munich-Venice was vital, but it didn't run. Was sent to Salzburg in the middle of the night. Eventualy reached Athes via Wien and from there by air, not my favorite way of traveling. In the end ÖBB (Austrian Railways) compensated nearly 75% of the extra costs. Thanks ÖBB!

This is just the kind of stress I was talking about. So I guess, it is a good learning experience for high school grads (or Gymnasium Abiturienten) in how to deal with unforeseen problems -- albeit, seasoned travelors know and see them well: missed connetions, cancelations, disappeared reservations. That's what credit cards are for: If you get stuck somewhere, you can buy yourself out.
As for travel companion friends ghosting you after the trip, I've heard of that problem from other friends. It happens alot when you get stuck overnight at an airport or train station or something else like that happens. They get pissed at you for taking them out of their comfort zone. As long as you didn't do anything criminal to them or they to you, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll have something to talk about in years to come at the bar or at parties.
