I used to have that same exact couch at my cabin. And where my cabin is there is this like orangey brown dirt. When my dog would come inside he would get on the couch and it would never come off. My parents then later replaced it with a black couch, that way the dirt wouldn’t really show up. So they are probably worried they won’t be able to get something off of it. Cleaning the sample isn't the same as the couch, you have to take into consideration most liquids will seep through past the first layer of fabric and you also can't just pour hot water all over your couch unless you put it outside let it dry and bring it back in whilst you most likely couldn't 100% remove smell etc.

No, you don’t pour water right on the couch. They are covers on top, so you take the covers off the actual couch. So once you take them off you do what you need to on the covers, then let them dry and put them back on the couch. I am 90% sure that this couch has covers, so she should be able to do this if she took the covers off.
