Great up-date on the season, going well, especially with the golden song sparrows!, will be great to see them fledged, class, the black siskins will be an interesting bird to go to nest, so much happening!, would make me dizzy trying to follow up with all the breeding/nesting activity!!!! Thanks 😉 Some - mostly softbills - stay outdoor all year and most finches go indoor. For the outdoor birds I put up infra red heating lamps during winter 😉

My first time hatching a shaft tail and the mother took it out of the nest while 1/2 still in shell and then tried to kill it. No fosters and don't have time to hand feed it due to full workdays. :(

Thanks! Most softbills and few finches stay outdoor - but I install infrared heating lamps during winter if below 0 degrees celcius. 😊
The do compete - so it is important to give plenty of boxes etc and provide places for them to build free as well 😉
Unfortunate that the Peking robbin/ white eye eggs are unfertile. I wonder how the young of this pair would look like.

Few I get with a net when they are in the shelter - but most are trapped in bird traps. Actually way more gentle then hunting them with nets. If you search for “trap + Dehlholm” you can see two videos on the matter 😉🤝

Have you had any success in raising goldfinches?
Not yet. Had only one attempt in 2022 (new birds as well) and the chicks died in the nest. But hoping for 2023 🤞🤞😉
it could have been the female's lack of experience, if that was the case this year it will go well for sure... I raise the europeans, the little ones. my biggest difficulty is getting the females to survive the winter... which is stupid because we don't even have harsh winters here in Portugal.

And strange with your birds. Only the females that dies? Are the males separated or are they all together?
yes, sometimes one male or two, but very rarely. females that lay eggs are the most difficult to keep alive during molting and winter. I manage to raise them because I change the eggs to canaries. Juveniles don't have this problem so I can keep breeding. when I get them to survive more than 2 years I leave the eggs. half the time the mother takes good care of the young. this year I have about 12 males and 2 females...

How cold does it get in winter where you live - and do the birds have a shelter?
